Hi DKMom, my son has been with the Vicksburg since boot camp...almost 2 years now. Mayport is a great base. The ship has had its issues since it is fairly old but those seem to be fixed now. I'll be happy to answer anything I can.
Thank you, CMD.
My husband's been in for about a year and a half now. He's just very irritated that his record hasn't cleaned itself up by now and that his performance (as he is hard working/responsible) has not landed him somewhere closer to what he'd like to be doing (carrer path wise). He emailed me today and seemed to be in much higher spirits than his last email, but I just want him to be happy in whatever it is he gets assigned. I'll keep reminding him to keep his chin up, not that he needs much reminding lol.. maybe he'll have something come open to him eventually. I don't know how often they get to change rates or even if they have that option available to them. I'm learning as I go. lol
Thanks for the info and advice. Much appreciated.
God Bless.
Navywife 21,
My husband is career Army, so while some things are different in the Navy much is the same. I was hoping the pre-enlistment stuff was gone from his record, since they did agree to let him enlist and the recruiter told him it won't matter in the long run. Knowing the military I should have realized that it is all there somewhere. Since now there is little else to see on our sailors record (not sure how long your husband has been in but guessing not very long) I guess it is pretty prominent in their record. However as they progress the important part will be how well they are performing. Tell him to keep a good attitude and focus on the job at hand and it will be noticed. My husband always tells our son that someone's watching him, even if he thinks otherwise...so complaining, snide comments, trying to get away with something... will not put him on anybodies good list (I do not think this is really a problem any more but we knew this kid as a teenager!).
I will also say that the military is a great life if you can adapt to the moves. I love the adventure and the benefits are huge. I would love it if my son made it his career, I hope with the cutbacks that it will be an option for him.
Well my husband isn't allowed (at this point) to do all the jobs he'd like that he very much deserves a chance at, due to those circumstances alone.
Another part of him not being so thrilled in his email today that he wrote to me, was due to the fact that he was reassured that after a couple years, his "pre-enlistment circumstances" would no longer be a factor in his career path. He said that they broke it down for him and showed him all he could do if this wouldn't have happened, and he would have ultimately had ANY job opportunity as an option. He's extremely smart and determined. He's just somewhat discouraged right now since he was told it wouldn't affect him, and it turns out it is, very much so. He now more than ever, is excited to be done in a couple years.
I feel so bad for him. I know it's a process, but you'd think it wouldn't affect his career path so aggressively as it did when he first enlisted. Glad to know we/he isn't the only one in this position.
Navywife21, Interesting question, my son is UNDES as well. He just graduated as an E3. Due to 'pre-enlistment circumstances' he had limited job opportunities as well when going in and had no idea what most of the jobs were anyway, so UNDES seemed like a good path to take so he'd have a better idea of what job he may eventually want to do.
I'm wondering if the 'pre-enlistment circumstances' will haunt him forever, or is the limited jobs available due to the draw-down?
Hey everyone. My husbnad went and talked to the career counselor yesterday on the ship and chose his 3 rates. (He's Undesignated.)
He wasn't too thrilled with his selection as it was very limited for him as of now, (Due to a pre-enlistment circumstance). The only things he was remotely ok with choosing from the rather small list was LS, & GM. (Logistics Support & Gunner's Mate). There were tons of things he wanted to do/try but these aren't one of them. lol
Does anyone know anything about these rates? I googled them but couldn't quite understand what it is they actually do with it every day. lol Does anyone have a sailor in these career paths? Any info would be most helpful. TIA.
God Bless!
Hello, my son is in boot camp, PIR May 11, and I got a letter that he is assigned to the Vicksburg, report date June 11. He is a PACT Seaman. Looking at the FB page it appears they are deployed and in the AER right now...I am guessing they will fly him to meet them at one of the ports unless they are due to come home soon??? I am sure he will know more but just wondering how this will work
No problem, girl. :)
I just wanted to put that out there as a friendly reminder to everyone. I just want everyone on their toes about this stuff. Better to be over-cautious than not worried at all. :) And better safe than sorry!
