HISTORY

In February 1981, the U. S. Navy awarded Lockheed Shipbuilding Company of Seattle, Washington, a contract to construct LSD 41, first of a new Dock Landing Ship class to replace the aging Thomaston-class LSDs. At 4 August 1981 keel-laying ceremony, the Honorable John F. Lehman, Secretary of the Navy, affixed his signature to the LSD 41 keel; the first keel of an amphibious assault ship lain in more than five years.
Although the first ship to carry the name Whidbey Island, there was at one time a ship on Navy rolls named USS Whidbey (AG-141), a small transport purchased from the U. S. Army and servicing U. S. Trust Territories in the late 1940s.
Whidbey Island, the first ship in a class designed specifically to interface with the Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC), assisted in the operational and developmental testing of the amphibious assault craft from July to September 1985 and again in May and July 1986.

Hi Everyone, I also put 2 boxes in the mail last Thursday -we're new to all this so I am anxious also to see how long it takes.  The nice part is I get an email just about every other day with some news (mostly how much my Sailor Girl misses home) but nice to have that contact with her.  She says she hears some days they will be home in Feb.  other days she hears by Thanksgiving... here's hoping for Thanksgiving ~

Good morning all, another week down.....  I sent off a care package this week.  Will be curious as to how long it will take to get there.  Does anyone know if they have access to microwaves, for those single serving items or popcorn?  Also, I was wondering how much room each person had to store their care packages.  I am envisioning that it is not much.  Just curious...  I heard it was ok to send chocolate for right now, as the  weather is mid 60s right now.  Hope everyone has a good week.

Hi, my Navy Girl is on her first deployment.  I joined Navy for Moms when she went to basic training 2008.  Lucky me, she is stationed only 4 hours away from home, so until now, visits have been regularly.  Although I worry, I am so proud she found something she loves and she is still close to home....most of the time.

Welcome ProudMama.  I have found facebook to be a great resource for me.  I used the email there instead of the military email. Of course, with security they can's say too much.  When my other son was in Iraq, somedays he would post silly things, song lyrics.  It really didn't matter what, just nice to see the activity.  I agree with Weeze Be's post about the Red Cross.  I work as a nurse and have had some of my patient's children brought out of combat zones to be with their critically injured family member.  I just try and stay busy.  One thing I did over the last year was to join our local Blue Star Mothers chapter.  We have done a couple of large mailings to troops in warzones.  Many of those mothers have these same concerns and are available to provide support to each other.   Hang in there, every day that passes is one closer to them getting home.

Thanks Weezer - makes me feel better - I did send a request to get on the email list- hopefully I'll hear something soon.  This seems to be a great resource to remind me I'm not alone in all of this.  Thanks to everyone for their messages and calming reassurance.  :)    God Bless our Military Kids

This is our families first long deployment as well. I would have given anything to have been there and seen them off. It would have been an awe inspiring sight! My daughter says all of the sailors on the ship are family, that gladdens my heart. We are planning to be there when they come home also. How do you get on the Omsbudsmans email list? I'm very glad to hear that time will go by quickly Kati. That's what I'm praying for, in addition to all of our sailors safe home!

Wheezer, sorry we weren't able to attend the leaving of the ship.  It was kinda of a surprise to us.  Nate has been very secretive, which surprises me because he was always terrible with secrets.  We found out the ship was leaving on Monday and just hopped in the car and took a chance that we could at least see him before they left.   Sounds like I need to get on that email list of the Omsbudsman.  I did show my son all of your sailor's pictures and he said he does know them all.  This is our family's first navy deployment.  Our other son just got back from Iraq.  He is stationed in Colorado, kinda a long drive so still working on seeing him.  Time does go by quicker than you think it will, so hang in there everyone!
