lol your from virginia too sometimes I forget what group I'm in. If you don't mind me asking what part of Virginia? We live NW of Richmond in the country. What does FC stand for? I know the nuke program is tough and long I hope he does ok. I worry to much about my baby boy 6'1 and 190 lbs! I'm sure he will do fine. Hoping for 1st personal letter today or tomorrow.
We live in Virginia also but flew in (we are empty nesters). Our son was also going to go the Nuke route especially since most of our family lives near Charleston, SC. He opted to go the FC direction thinking he wouldn't be in school as long. Funny how things work out, he still ended up being in school for a long time! lol! He loves his choice though and that is all that matters. My husband is from Chicago and graduated from the same boot camp. It was nice to have a "tour guide" who was familiar with the area. One place your son will likely want to go is the mall. Yes, the mall. Gurney Mall to be exact. lol!! All the graduates tend to gravitate there. The weather is still somewhat chillish there so remember to bring something warm to wear!
Funny was just writing ps in bottom of letter about ordering dvd and pictures. we are driving up from virginia yikes. with his 2 younger sisters age 9 and 11. airfare with cancellation insurance was to expensive for 4 people plus car rental. It will take about 13 hours. Arriving Thursday and leaving Monday. Plan on sightseeing Chicago with girls after my son leaves. He is going to S.C for Nuke school his dad did same program. Hoping he leaves late Saturday, Sunday would be great but I know that probably won't happen. Go Navy!
Tears are totally acceptable! It means you're human! :) I still get excited when our sailor son calls (we have a total of 5 children). I love hearing from all of our children but he's a tad ... shall we say, spoiled? lol! He's the only one of our children to follow in his grandfathers (both sides) and father's footsteps and join the Navy.
I broke his box down and put it away in the closet so it wouldn't get tossed out. Besides, it takes up less space when it is folded.
Are you planning to go to his graduation? If you can manage it, it is worth it! They can purchase a video when they have their pictures taken. Make sure he requests it! Our son purchased the LARGEST picture package they sold. OMG, we have soooo many pictures. lol! When we went for his graduation he said we needed to take them back with us. We flew! One of his pictures was an 11 x 13!! Seriously? So we went to a FedEx (or UPS?) location and had them mailed to us. Something to think about should you run into the same problem. :)
Thanks also to your son and your family's sacrifice to our country!
Navywifeandmom- thanks for your insights and understanding on what we are going thru. I am by no means a crier, but I find myself tearing up even if I see a flag. Luckily I have 2 younger children 11 and 9 that keep me quite busy. Funny my husband tried to burn the box(we live out in country and I was like no not that box). I don't know if I will keep it 2 years, but it's not going anywhere anytime soon. I miss my baby boy terribly; Its nice to hear from veterans who understand. What a patriotic family - thanks for all your service to our great nation.
As my name implies, I am a Navy wife and mother. Our youngest son graduated with Div 150 almost 2 years ago now. Hard to believe it has been that long but time does pass quickly. For those of you who are new here, stay strong! This website is a wonderful place to meet others like yourself who are concerned for the safety and well-being of your "child/sailor". Although I grew up Navy (dad was a Master Chief), and married Navy, I still had concerns for our son during boot camp since he was my "baby" (I know he would cringe if he knew I said that!).
Yes, there will be a LOT of crying - on both parts. I was strong throughout the entire process until my "sailor in a box" arrived. At that point, I lost it! I broke down and cried for hours. Literally! I stared at the box for a while before opening it and then went thru each and every pocket, as well as the inside of the shoes (where I found his boarding ticket!). Needless to say, I still have the box with his handwritten address and quick doodle drawing. I can't seem to part with it.
He stayed in Great Lakes for A school and C school before being sent to San Diego and then on to Washington State.
One thing he appreciated while in basics (aka - boot camp) was all the letters he received from family and friends. Please understand if your child does not write a lot or often. They are given limited amounts of time to do so and receive letters other than yours to which they also reply. I cannot stress enough how important it is NOT to send pictures that may cause them embarrassment or result in "beat downs". They are not literal. My son said there were some who received pictures of their girlfriends in the buff. Not good!
Our son was also very cautious of our not commenting in letters or sending pics of us with his dad in uniform since he is an officer. Not a good idea either since that could result in being singled out too.
I haven't been on here much since he graduated but still receive email notifications. If I can be of any help to anyone, please feel free to let me know!
Wow your daughter sounds like an amazing person. Yeah I just keep telling myself a lot of people go thru and they all make it out just fine. He is my only boy and I must admit I have babied him a little bit. He has grown into such a fine, caring young man already. He turned 19 5 days after arriving at bc. He's a little over 6 ft and 200 lbs I'm sure the exercises are killing him. I tried to warn him he hates to run. I'm sure he will hate it even more now. Said his division wasn't doing to well and having a lot of ITE as a group. but im sure they are all hit pretty hard in the beginning. Hope they get it together. I watch the bc graduation videos and tear up. I know I'm gonna be a wreck that day. Thanks for commenting. Hopefully we can wake up this group.
My daughter was 24 when she went in. She had to call a couple of times for her security clearances. The first time she called she was very serious and said that she only had a few minutes, she would be calling back in two days and she couldn't talk any more. I stopped her briefly and said I just have one question. You could hear the break in her voice as she said," I'm ok". Was the hardest thing to hear. And this was my girl who had just spent the past year in Bali on vacation. You never know how they will react. Our son had difficulty too, he was 20 when he went through BC.
Yes writing lots of letters. Hubby got to speak to him yesterday just shy of 2 weeks in. I was at girl scout cookie booth sale and left phone in car. Hes extremely homesick. Hoping for better days ahead.
Hi Proud mama, I have 2 sailors, 1 girl + Gdaughter, and 1 boy+ wife, stationed in Virginia. My daughter is attached to Fort Belvour, but works for NGA and lives in Woodbridge, our son and daughter in love, live in Virginia Beach and he is attached to a command at Dam Neck. Yes it has been quiet on this site, my last post was in August. Letters and questionnaires really helped my kids in BC too.
