Hi fishmom: My son is an AO and has been stationed at Whidbey for about 4 yrs.  it’s a great place to visit with lots to see and enjoy.  Suggest you go online and Google Things to Do on Whidbey Island. Advisor will also give you things to see/do in the area.  Deception Pass is a exquisite place to explore, walk on the beach and take photos.  You will travel over Deception Pass bridge to enter or leave Whidbey Island.  The island has several quaint little towns to explore and dine, in addition to the main town of Oak Harbor.  Popular Destinations in Whidbey Island. #1 Oak Harbor. #2 Langley. #3 Coupeville. #4 Freeland. #5 Clinton. #6 Greenbank.  I like all of them but esp Coupeville.  You can take a ferry from Clinton to Port Townsend, which has great shops, Victorian house, history and lots to see and do there.

Anacortes is another cute town, right off the island, to visit. There is an small Outlet Mall in Mt Vernon and a Costco and mall with movie theatre complex in Burlington, which are off-Island.  If you have time, a drive to Leavenworth WA for their Octoberfest celebration would be fun. There is a large casino just off the island if you enjoy that.  If you have a trailer or RV, the base has a really wonderful RV Park with views of the Juan de Fuca islands. Taking a ferry trip to one or more of the islands and spending aday or two there is very special.

We visited our sailor several times and enjoyed every visit spent on and off the island. When we didn’t stay in our RV on base, we stayed at the Navy Lodge on base.  We had base access since we’re retired Govt employees.

My sailor will transfer soon to the Chicago area.  I’ll miss having him somewhat close to home in Oregon and I’ll miss visiting him on Whidbey Island.

Good luck to your sailor and enjoy your time in the area when you visit.

Hi, Fishmom:

Ditto what roguevalgal says.  Also, be sure to check out the PBY Museum, Ft. Casey, and Adm. Head Lighthouse.  Flyer's is a great place to go for dinner--love their "secret sauce".

My daughter (currently deployed) is also out of Whidbey.  It is a beautiful place.

Enjoy your visit!

Great Tips here for sightseeing and visiting the island.  We love Coupeville, and all the beaches/coves on the island.  Deception Pass is spectacular, and of course, historic Fort Casey with its magnificent vistas, old military battle stations/artillery guns/turrets, and armory storage bunkers...great place to explore.  take a flashlight and a kite!  A neat lighthouse there too.
