Glad to see some recent posts. My son has been an officer for 3 years now. Took some time to get use to only seeing him twice a year.

Hi, everyone. I'm so glad to see some comments here. A lot has happened in the past month. My son will be shipping out to boot camp on Nov 4th. He is  going to be a Machinist's Mate. So now, we just wait! I'm brand new to all of this, so I'm glad to meet moms with more experience. Any tips you can offer would be great!

Hi all, I guess I am old and experienced.  Hs, My son has been enlisted for 10 years now.  He has had quite a few tours, some long and some short.  He has been to many places around the world.  He is now a Recruit Division Commander at Great Lakes for a 3 year stint. Yay, no ships!!  Nest summer he will be off again for 3 years of ship duty.  He plans to retire from the navy in 10 more years.

Hi everyone...new and experienced!.  there is a Navy Mom's Wisconsin on Facebook where they is probably more "traffic".  I am 5 years into this adventure.  My son is a Seabee, currently deployed half way across the world.  He just re-enlisted and will be stationed at Pearl Harbor (momma's gotta figure out a way to visit!).  He joined right after high school and I have been amazed and so proud of the growing up he has done. He has had great experiences and has seen the world (almost) It's been a great thing for him.

Welcome Newbies!  This group has not been very active, but we can change that!  I am somewhat new to Navy Momhood as well.  My sailor left for boot camp in September of 14, and is just now at his first service station.

As for when he leaves, it depends on a lot of things...but from what I understand it is mostly base on his rate(the "job" he chooses)  After he takes the ASVAB, they will give him a list of available rates based on his score.  After he chooses that they will let him know when he ships out.

For my son, he enlisted in Feb 2014 and left for boot camp in Sept 2014.  However he was still in High School and had to graduate first.

Ask you son if he minds if you go talk to the recruiter with him, since he's an adult you don't have to be there like I did, mine was 17 when he enlisted.  But you can get some good info from the recruiter.  BUT, be aware that everything the recruiter tells you is NOT always true.  They are trying to paint a pretty picture of the Navy and they sometimes stretch the truth.

Let me know what other questions you have, I will try to answer as best I can.  There is also a group called DEPS Mom's, or something like that.  You can probably get some good info there.

Good luck to you and your future sailor!  Hooyah!

Hi bdmom64! I am new to this group as well. My son entered the DEP program in January and begin boot camp on May 19! It really depends on what he'll be going in to and when they decide to send him. Our son is 19 and completed a semester of college and decided to join then.

Hello! This group doesn't look very active, but I thought I'd post something anyway, just to see if anyone is still around. My son has just recently decided to enlist and is at the very beginning of his journey. He's be talking with a recruiter and meeting with him regularly. And, today he went to Des Moines, IA to take the ASVAB and get a physical.

I have no idea what comes next. How long does it take to go to boot camp?

My son is very independent (he's 20 yrs old) and really hasn't shared very much of his thinking with us. It's frustrating, but I'm proud of his initiative and effort.

If there is still anyone around in this group, I'd love to connect with you in some way.

Good morning. Wow where has the summer gone? Here we are almost the end of August, this is the first chance I have had to get back and tell you about our trip in June to my Son's ship. I am SO proud. As we walked through His ship with Him and listened to all His responsibilities, and stories, and met fellow Sailors. This Mom was bursting at the seams.

Good morning, M4W, welcome. I read so much, and learn even more from everyone here. So sorry to say I am not real good about talking, but working on that.

Your Son leaves for DEP in July. It has been just a little over a year since my Son went. Now He is stationed at Norfolk, and has gone through so many changes. One thing is He is getting married in a little less than two weeks. While in A School Navy buddies introduced these two. I adore Her.

When the time comes for planning your trip for Graduation I will back track and get you the information on the place that we always stayed. They are so wonderful.

Good luck to your Son, and to you.

Have a safe day.
