My son just got there last night. His flight from Seattle was delayed after mechanical problems on Tuesday. They gave passengers room and board and left the next day. It's 3:38am now, 15 hours central time ahead of me. This weekend he is going to Tokyo. How exciting!
My son has a friend on the BlueRidge. He loves it according to my son.
Hello All, My son has graduated from A school on Oct 31 and is CSSN for USS BlueRidge. He leaving on Nov.17 to report on Nov. 21. This is first assignment and my child leaving me to go this far away from home. I thought Bootcamp was hard! I will be seeking you all help to get through this.
@Amberwaves...sorry you had such a terrible experience on AA.
@ djk's Mom, our flight last March was on Delta. they a did a decent job with the beverages...free beer and wine as well. food was edible but the seats are somewhat small and they pack lots of people in. Not sure how to get your sailor home and back for the lowest cost though. That is an expensive time to fly anywhere. Not sure any of them offer a decent military discount in some case it costs more...guess they think the military/Govt is paying so they up the cost. Most of the airlines do have websites and I searched there for the lowest one. Most important is make sure you sailor has those dates approved before booking the tickets...changing the dates is costly but if you have too... call the airline direct to make changes, rather than trying to change online. Good luck.
Good Morning fellow Moms!
I am new here and looking for tips to fly my Sailor home for Christmas?
@1preciousgirl: We all had those feelings. My sailor is my first born and was very hard to have him so far away! He went in Jan. 2013, came home in Oct 2013, and now we haven't seen him since then. 1 year this week. We are veterans, and we were actually stationed on Yokosuka 20 years ago and my sailor was actually born there, that is the only reason we are not going, we lived there 4 years, i have done everything there! lol. We facebook message every week, we skype, I send packages, he posts pictures of his travels. He has been in the Navy over 2 years now and it gets a little easier, but sometimes I just get upset and cry that I miss him. I have 5 more kids at home to keep my busy, but I still miss my first born. I save all of his pictures that he posts and I am making him a japan scrapbook to show his children one day (wish i had done that 20 years ago!) Good luck.
Found out my son will be stationed in Yokosuka for 3 years after completion of "A" school in Meridian, MS. I've finally been able to stop the constant crying but am still in disbelief. I know this is what he wants and its a great adventure for him but as a single mom...Ive been waiting for him to return a little closer to home (CA)....and now this??? How do I get thru it??? Help
Just found out my daughter will be stationed in Japan for three years after she complets "C" school. She ivery excited about it.
Thanks Elaine and Amberwaves for the info. I am trying to make reservation at Navy Lodge, at Yokosuka but they will not do it until 30 days prior to arrival.
First and foremost before you book those tickets to Japan make sure that your sailor will be able to get the time off to be with you..they go to INDOC and learn alot about how to survive there.
When I went to Yokosuka in March, sailor son did meet us at the Narita airport then we took the train to Yokosuka. They have a very nice train system there...always on time and it's posted in more than one language. We got to stay at his house off base for the majority of the time we were there. IF you are planning on doing much exploring of Japan away from the base, I suggest you get a JR rail pass. about 180$ each person for 7 day pass. But the exchange voucher must be gotten before leaving the US. then once there they will put a start date on it. If you are staying "local", you might not need it. We rode the bullet train to Hiroshima and that alone was about 185$ for Erik, one way. (they can't get the JR pass as they are for tourists). motels in other cities can be reasonable if you shop ahead and make reservations. (1 city we did and 1 we didn't. BIG mistake on that one). The Ryokan we stayed in outside the Snow Monkey park was delightful, owner was great and it had it's own hot springs that we enjoyed use of. Local train to/from as far as Tokyo wasn't too bad price wise. If your sailor lives on base in a dorm, you will need to try to get them to book you a spot in the Navy Lodge, might be better for you. There were motels not too far away from the base gate, but don't know how pricey as we didn't need them. Wonderful restaurant, called Coco's not too far from gate..serves curry (various spice levels available) other food items, ATM's etc are readily available in convenience stores like 7-11 which are everywhere. water, hot/cold beverages are available in vending machines, also everywhere.
the base has a ITT/MWR office that has tours that sailor and you can go on, if signed up for before they are full.
It was an experience of a life time, sure glad I went! hope this helps a bit, if you have other questions, I'll try to answer what I can. have fun.
