Hi Colleen, My son has been there a little over 17 months. I send snacks, anything. That's when he is on base. Not alot when they are out to sea, not much room.
Last year my son had Thanksgiving at his Mentors place. This year he is home until Sat.
Good Morning everyone. IMy name is Colleen and my sailor arrived in Yokosuka, Japan on November 11th. He is with the Fightin Fitz. I am excited to hear how everyone is doing and hopefully get some insight on what happens around the holidays. I have no clue what to send or when to send it. I am thinking yesterday was probably best. Can I send baked goods? Will they be okay if I vacuum seal them? What is a good gift? As you can tell I am clueless. Thanks for having me in the group. Looking forward to getting to know you all.
idahojeep, enjoy your time with your sailor. I hope it is not two years for my son to come home. February will be a year in Japan. Not sure I can wait two years!
Yay #1 son is home for 20 days! His twin brother is still in Yokosuka and won't get leave until March. So nice to see him - its been 2 years since he was last home.
They do allow some E4 to live off base. They have to get permission to do so my son said. The housing allowance is a little different in japan than in the states. There is a max amount in housing they get. So say they are allowed 1200 and there rent is only 1100 then they only get the 1100. And if rent is 1300 they still only get the 1200. but for utilities they get a set amount I think it is 500. If there bill is less they keep the extra. I believe they are allowed more like 1800 for rent as my son gets more than 1200 and he is e4. Mine does not share his place. He has a real nice apt in a high rise. Even has to let people up when they come to visit. They have to buss him then he can let them up.
