Yokosuka is like 730/800pm on a clock if you look at the 3pm Mon circle.   Crossing fingers it misses them!

Another thing. Has anyone heard any info on the typhoon that is expected to hit Japan? I just seen my sons facebook post about a typhoon. My oldest son, who is also in the Navy, says they send out the ships if bad storms are expected.

Thanks everyone for the info. I dont want to pester him too much about the housing I am just hoping he has a good sponsor helping him make the right decisions about this. Wow JDMK, I didnt realize they did not get to pocket the excess money.

WelcomeNavymomx2.   My son is on the George Washington based in Yokosuka. He made E5 in May and this is what he posted on his facebook page last night “good news and bad. I’ve been getting paid E-5 since Aug 1st but because I didn’t sign up for housing (off base housing) I’m losing out on like $1200 I could have had.”  He was explaining the housing to us when he
was home on leave last week. If I understood him correctly, he said that at E5
they get off base housing allowance and are encouraged to move off base so that the new guys living on the ship can get barracks rooms. They have a maximum amount for housing and utilities…I’m guessing $1200 based on his post. If they sign up for housing it shows in their pay but is automatically taken out to pay rent and utilities. If their rent and utilities are less than max amount they do NOT get to pocket the excess, so he plans to fine the nice place possible within the allotted amount.

@Navymomx2   It's my understand at his rank he can get place off base.  Mine is single and "renting a house one train station away from the base".   he share it with a buddy from his unit.  I don't have much details as I don't hear from him enough but He said it was 1000sq ft and 2 story.  I believe that he has either had to pay the rent before he leaves on deployments or has it being taken out of bank account.   But he doesn't have to store stuff this way when he is gone to sea.   He has gotten internet to his place as well.   Hope this at least gives you/him some hope.   I know he lived on the ship for a bit waiting to find a place.

I was stationed in Japan for 5 years a while ago, my son is stationed there now.  He is an E4 so he is in  the barracks. I thought (and I very well can be wrong) that only shore duty could live off base?   I lived out in town but i was married and had a child (who is now stationed there!) and i was on shore duty.  No Japanese is going to want to lease to a sailor that might go out for 6 months, how would he get paid?  Plus, the Navy will only give you one move (of your things) when you get there and one move out when you leave, what would he do if he signed a 3 month lease, where would he put his stuff while out to sea??   When my hubby was on a ship the single sailors lived on the ship
Things could of changed?

Hi, I am new to this group. My son was stationed in Sasebo for 2 years. He is now in Yokusuka on the Shiloh. He is still new there, this is day 5. He is getting settled in. He is new E-5. In Sasebo when he was E-4 he was in barracks but now that he is an E-5 he is looking at housing off base. I wish he could get something on the base but not sure how that works for his rate. He is single and wanting something small but nice. Also the ship he was on before in Sasebo deployed a lot of shorter but more frequent trips. Since he is on the Shiloh he will probably deploy for a longer amount of time (6-7 months) I am thinking. If anyone knows more info on Shiloh I would appreciate it. So with housing for single military will he have to sign a lease for 1-2 years since he will be gone for probably. 6-7 months or is it where military can pay by the month only, or sign shorter leases like 3-6 month. Any info on this subject would be appreciated.

@Papaw67,   I'd like to go see my sailor Spring 2014.   don't know if the USO helps or not, I haven't tried to contact them yet. Have ask a few ?'s of my son's Ombudsman,  she was quite helpful short of I know she's not allowed to say if his ship will be in port or not.  NO one knows that for sure.   If your sailor is on a ship, I'd ask him what he's heard about a normal schedule of out to sea or not.  However you do realize that the Navy doesn't always follow normal..(whatever normal is, lol).  If the sailor is on shore duty assignment,  give them plenty of notice to put in a leave request. so they can get time off and also get you a guest pass for the base.   The ombudsman did find out that the MWR/ITT office does offer some tours of Japan, and that you can go on them without the sailor (should they not have the time off) but the sailor has to sign you up.  If the sailor is into touring they could possibly go to, if you'd like a more tour guided setting for seeing Japan.  If you just want to go hang out with sailor and see things they know, they could maybe get you a room at the Navy Lodge.    I'm still trying to get as many details as I can too for a trip I'd like to make.

Does anyone think planing a vac trip to Japan to see sailor next spring is wise, and does USO offer any assistance ?
