Haven't been on here for a long time. My son left 12-26 for Yokosuka Base. He is a Master At Arms (Harbor Patrol). Any other sailors on the base not a ship on here?
Hi justpeachy - I didn't know about the earthquake so just went on Google for more info and apparently it was centred in Tochigi about 120 km (75 miles) from Tokyo
& about 90 from Yokosuka. They said there was no tsunami warning so hopefully things are okay out there. Let me know if you hear anything different.
rominpa - my son is on the Lassen too. I haven't met anyone on here yet from the Lassen. Has anyone heard if the earthquake last night over there effected our ships yet?
katlanta - thanks so much -you've been very helpful & given me some peace of mind.
Hi guys - My son has been on the Lassen for 1-1/2 years & when he called us last time he mentioned he was talking to a career counselor regarding cross training for another job that would possbily mean him leaving the ship before his original end date of 3 years. Does anyone know if this is normal procedure or could this possibly hurt his current status on the ship since they know he's looking to possibly transfer? Let me know if any of you have any experience with this with your sailors. Thanks!
Here's a good guide for travel. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2273.html We had snow while we were waiting for our flight to leave Dec. 1.
I would think April would be lovely - Cherry Blossoms!!!!!!!
Oh and the weather was fine. We took light jackets and it was more than enough. There was one night that it was a little cool, but not bad. (We're from Wisconsin so it was about like it was here.) Temp was between 45 - 60 degrees.
Joanne - I was there over Thanksgiving. It was wonderful. Still able to see some of the fall colors. We were fortunate that for part of the trip we were able to stay at the New Sanno in Tokyo. It was WAY cheaper than other hotels. My sailor took leave the entire time we were there. It was absolutely wonderful!!!!!!! I'm hoping to go back March 2014. I don't think I would go during typhoon season or when it's hot. BUT I do know of someone that was there during the summer and they hiked Mt. Fuji. My trip was absolutely wonderful. Lots of trains and traveling. It was so worth it!!!
We can all sympothize. It was hardest for me the first 9 months. It got much better after he came home for leave the first time. We surprised everyone and it was so much fun! Since then it's been a lot easier. For some reason it's hard on me now when he's deployed. I don't know why - it's not like anything really changes on my side. I guess it's a mental thing because of the way we all tend to view the word "deployment." Doesn't mean the same for everyone.
