if a sailor is stationed there and his girlfriend comes to visit , can they get married there? does anyone know?

purplegiraffe - your son can buy a cell phone when he gets there.  His cell phone from here won't work unless you get it unlocked.  My son has an iPhone from over there.  I don't have a smartphone - mine is just a dumb phone.  We can text free  Textme, Text Free or Viber - apps he downloaded.  He can call me for free using the apps but I have no way to call him.  I wouldn't attempt to call him anyway - I never know when he is available.  If I need him, I text him to call me or send a Facebook message.  You can skype, e-mail and Facebook.  All of this depends on when they have wifi available at the time.  Since he has shore duty he may have better access than the ones on a ship.  I believe the USO has free landlines for them to use anytime.

#2 son has a cell phone but he washed it in the washer and now it does not work.

I skype with one of mine, his brother is not that much of a contact person.  :(  But #2 goads #1 to come to the rec center once in awhile.  Mostly by email but if they are out I do not hear from them.

#2 son is coming home soon!  #1 will try to get leave after the first of the year!

how do sailors in japan contact home?  do they get cell phones over there?  he will have his new laptop, so we can facebook or skype maybe?   My son is going to Japan next month-shore duty.   He was born there when I was stationed there, but I am sure things have changed in 15 years since I have left.

Myboy 94, there's lots of stuff going on for our sailors to participate in. There should be absolutely no excuse for them to be lonely unless they choose to. I like to keep up with the offerings by MWR. http://mwryokosuka.wordpress.com/. They even have a newletter you can subscribe to.

Got an email from #1 son and he is not going to take his leave as the ship is getting back in 2 days after his ticket was dated for coming home.  He says that would give him only 5 days at home.  He said he will try to take more leave after the first of the year.  We will miss him but maybe have him longer if we wait.  Merry Christmas to all!
