My son just left today for Yokosuka.  He will stationed on the USS Lassen, which is in dry dock till December approximately.  Anything I need to know?  What about care packages?  Can we go visit there next Summer?  Etc.,

My son has shore duty at Yokosuka.  He leaves after the holidays.  He was actually born there when I was stationed there 18 years ago.  Also he got to visit when he was 16 for a 3 week student ambassador tour, so he is not thrilled, but I told him it will great!!!!   I am excited he is going!

When they first get to Japan they all have classes they are required to take to help them get around and used to the customs in Japan. They take them as a group on the buses and trains. My son said he got to see a bunch. Once the GW gets back he will have to explore on his days off. Mine seems to explore somewhere different each weekend. Even climbed MT Fuji. There are planned climbs they can sign up for.

Thanks JDMK! I have visited the GW FB page a few times, but I'm always happy to get the latest events.

Right now the GW is in Guam, I am able to say this because it is on the GW facebook page. So not and OPSEC issue. If you haven't like the GW fb page yet here is the link USS George Washington's Facebook Page you might want to check it out. I hope this works. They post pictures and other information, its a great way to "sort of" know what's going on.

kathy- I'm still learning myself, but glad navymom3 could offer some answers.  While my son was waiting to fly out to GW, he attended classes (I'm assuming to keep them busy and sort of orientating new arrivals) and he got to do some sightseeing for a couple of hours one day.  He sent some pics at 2pm his time, midnight mine, last night.  And, of course I could not go back to sleep for a while because we were messaging back and forth with comments on the pictures.

JDMK- That's cool that your son has had the opportunity to see different places while he's been there.  That was one of the main reasons my son wanted to join, to see new people and places.

Hi navymomfromCT and JerrsMom

I’m Jill.  I have a son on the GW. Yokosuka and the GW is his first duty station. He was flown out to the ship when it was deployed at the end of June.  He met the “Gdub” in Korea. He only saw Korea from the dock but did get to visit in the next port of call, Hong Kong. We were able to Skype this morning and he still loves being on the GW.

kathy when they are in dry dock they are usually something is being repaired. There could be times they are not working on the boat depends on what is being done. But most of the time they are still working on the boat cleaning, painting, fixing and doing whatever they are told to do. They can also be loaned out to other ships as needed. There is usually a whole long list of to do's when they are in dry dock. I know most from the wilbur have been working long hours while in dry dock.

jerrysmom we use that app also with my son. But he has been there since January. He is assigned to the Wilbur which is in dry dock right now.

navymomfromCT- My son left U.S. two weeks ago and is due to fly out to the GW in the next few days.  We've been keeping in touch via Viber (free app for your phone so you can message and talk).
