Just found out my Sailor made Petty Officer.  IT3.  So pround of him.  He surprised me last month and came home.  I had no idea he was coming.  Woke me up at 1am on the phone.  I thought he was still in Japan but he said "Go outside" .  I did and he was standing in the drive way with a rental car.  I was so happy.  Best day of my life.  Now he's a Petty Officer.  I have a really great kid.

Hello,

I have a question and hopefully someone can help me.  My son ordered a weight bar (45lbs x 7 ft) and some other thing that weights about 65 lbs.  The company he ordered from would not send it to him in Yokosuka, so he sent it home and wants me to send it to him.  I asked FedEx and they said no.  Any ideas how to get it to him, please.

Blondie is right - get a passport while he is home on leave.  He doesn't need it to go to Japan (he just needs his military ID) but if he wants to go places on leave he will have to have it.  My son is on the USS Curtis Wilbur.  They do have internet access on the ship but very often they have "black outs" where they cut it off - especially when they are underway.  When they are in port they can usually find a spot with wifi when they aren't working but they work long hours when they are in port.

Jake loves Japan and loves sailing.  It's hard work but he has not complained at all.  It has been a great experience for him!

jansu831:  That helps a lot...I was going to get him a phone here....but I will wait.....What about a passport...does the navy give him a passport or while he is on leave for two weeks should we get him a passport?  Is your son on a ship or land???  Will they have internet access on the ship?  Does your sailor like Japan??

Hey navymomfromCT - Don't get a phone here before he goes.  It won't work over there.  He can buy one there and get on a plan.  The best advise I got about my sailor going to Japan is not to worry.  (He left on February 15th this year)  When they get there, they figure everything out in about 3 minutes after you spent months worrying about it.  The others on his ship will teach him the ropes.  My son got an iPhone in Japan and there are APPS to text and call home for free.  I don't have a smart phone but we text back and forth just fine and for free. We text a lot but don't have a lot of luck with the calls - the reception isn't good and we end up getting frustrated.  Text works great.  We have an agreement that if I especially need him that I will leave him a private message on Facebook.  This is because I know that if there is any way in the world to check his Facebook - he will.  We write our "letters" through Facebook.  Skype works great as well - you just have to make "appointments" because of the time difference.  We don't have an international plan because you really can't call them because their hours are so crazy along with the time difference.  Hope this helps.

Hi there....my sailor just got his orders...he is graduating on May 15 in Pensacola, FL for AS....he will be coming home for two weeks.....He will be going to Japan and reports for duty on the George Washington....I have been trying to figure out a way to communicate with him...we were going to get a new phone when he comes but reading stuff on this site it is better for him to get a phone when he gets to Japan?  I'm so nervous that he is going to be so far away....
