Adams mom- He can stay in the USO as they have beds and a shower they can use. On the Japan page it was just posted what they had there for them. sailorwifenmom posted this:

They have a bunk room with like 6 bunk beds (12 beds total) where they can grab a couple of hours sleep (complete with them coming in to wake you for your flight), they have showers, huge overstuffed leather couches, a big screen tv, books, internet, all sorts of stuff.  They even have a room for families traveling with little kids that have toys and cribs in it.  He can also get something to eat there, and they will also store his luggage for him until he can check in.

Hi All, my son starts his journey to Japan tomorrow. He has a long layover in Seattle is there a place for them to stay or do we get him a room?

So it doesn't sound like he will get to come home very often if at all. How long are they usually stationed in Japan?

well, my son tells me what works--he checks with command to see when he is on leave and what that means, then tells us. you don't know for certain if they will be in port except now around Christmas. I would love to see Japan cherry blossoms or fall colors but for 2 yrs now I go Jan 1 and freeze my hind end just to visit. I do know that he looks forward to our visit, as it is the only time all year we have seen him face2face. maybe others know better but it seems that from march through october they are busy with sea trials or to far away ports. last year it was the earthquake and tsunami that cancelled leaves for a while. the general rule is, you don't know for certain when to visit...stay flexible and they will tell you if a window is coming up. but circumstances can change that...

there is facebook and text and chat and it really does make him seem closer--I can't imagine what it was like even 20 yrs ago to have a son overseas!

write him at the ships address:

name and position

USS John S McCain DDG 56

FPO AP 96672-1274

tesla was right--when you say to ask the command what to plan, what do you mean?  I know that we want to go to visit him sometime, but how do you know when they will be in port for any length of time.  We are clueless about all this and don't get a lot of info from our sailor...I don't think he knows much yet either.  He is in base indoc this week, so maybe he will have more info.  I'm still waiting for his mailing address!
