I would get him a passport so if he wants and has time he can travel. I agree with navymom3 that he will need long johns.  I would send him over with light, medium and heavy weight (my son has blue and black ones).  Also, waterproof socks are a must.  My son likes the waterproof-bamboo socks because they are warm and dry quickly.  Don't know about the phone because son has a Japanese phone and just adds minutes to the phone as needed.

Welcome Lisa- My son heads over in January. And I think you got everything. They say an unlocked i phone will work. I guess I will find out when he gets there. And they say it gets cold and they may need long johns as they sizes run out fast if he is tall.

Hi Everyone, my son will be joining the GW in December.  I think I am still processing the information... sounds like quite an adventure which is right up his alley! Lots of great information on here, what a blessing N4Ms has been for me.

So if I am reading right... my son's current cell phone won't work unless he looks into sim card once he gets to japan.  What about his hotspot for his laptop? I guess I should call Sprint and find out?

And I guess he should get a passport too?

navymom3 - I'm not sure about using an iphone in Japan that was purchased in US but it's worth a try.  My son was told that cell phones from US won't work in Japan but this app somehow bypasses that...not sure how.  One thing I do know for sure, to get FREE calls you have to both have the app and go through that to place calls.

Thank you musicmom of a Sailor, Blondie, and kathy!!  I'm really dreading Christmas this year.  Our son is an only child so it's just me and my hubby for Christmas. I'd like to go on a cruise or skiing, but i think my hubby just wants to stay here. About communication....is the iphone a good way to go?  i'd love to be able to text him. That's really our main form of communication now with a phone call thrown in here and there. What do you all recommend? We definitely plan to skype when we can. Thank you all so much for the wealth of info that you all have.  I'm having a hard time with this all, but it is what it is!!

One thing I wanted to pass on to all the moms.  My son got an iphone when he got to Japan and I also have an iphone.  There is an app called Text Free with Voice that allows you to call and text FREE.  It's been great to talk to him an average of once a week and also to do quick texts to keep up to date with him : )
