My son is a little older (almost 21) and he's been at Yokosuka on the USS Lassen since mid September.  He is loving it so far but I think the holidays will be the real test.  This will be the first year the family hasn't been together for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, plus his birthday is on New Year's Eve so no video game marathon at our house for the first time in 5 years or so.  It's going to be rough on all of us but we'll get through.

Hi all!  I'm another mom with a 19 year old sailor that will be off to Yokosuka in January 2012 (USS GW).  He'll finish A school this week in Pensacola and has C school in Lemoore.  I would also like to hear from moms who have sailors on the "young"side and how they adapted/adjusted (both mom and sailor).  My son is soooo excited but Japan is so far away but I'm having trouble adjusting.

Hi Davesmom my son was told two weeks at least but possibly three weeks. He is to leave our home on Christmas evening. We will have a lot in common the next few years it sounds like. It is hard to believe they just graduated high school and will be half way around the world. As long as they stay safe and happy I am sure we will all make it through. Yes N4M is a God send. My son's name is Andrew but has gone by Tate his whole life so if I ever call him that you will know who I mean. Ha Ha He will be stationed on the USS John McCain. Stay in touch.

Hi daisysjule, my 19 yr old son is at A school also and will be finishing up next week.  We are not sure exactly when he will leave for Yokosuka but it should be in the next few weeks.  He will be serving on the USS Cowpens.  How much time will your son get at home before he leaves?  I'm so thankful for N4M and all these veteran moms that can help us through this!

My son Andrew is 19 and is at A school for fire training. That will be his job he was told for about two years or more then he will do some engine mechanic stuff as he tests and trains into it. It is nice to hear all of your suggestions. This will make the transition easier. Do your sons like Japan? I have heard alot of great things. We will miss him. We have a close family and he is the second of four children the only boy. We want to be really positive for him though. He leaves Christmas evening for Japan. Where have your sons been while deployed from Japan? I am sure they have seen great sights. Thanks again for all your help in understanding things better. God Bless You all and your sons and daughters also!

Andrew's Mom - Just like Adam , my son is also in A school at great lakes and will join the fleet in Yokosua Japan on board the USS McCain. I would love some info on the area and what he will need when he gets there. Also what we can expect about visits home and has anyone ever gone to visit their sons or family there? Thanks glad to have a group who is going through this with me.

If you Google Japan free tickets, many articles come up regarding their plan to promote tourism to foreigners.  You to submit an application, you will have to write about positive experiences about your visit, etc.  Go! :)

Once they launch it I am sure all us navy moms who have sailors in Japan will be right on it. I know I will. My son will be going in January. He was suppose to go probably now but they assigned him a C school.
