I saw that article listed on Yahoo a couple of days ago too.  Apparently they haven't launched the program yet, but they are expected to.

It was on the news last night - "Japan is "considering" giving away 10,000 round trip tickets to promote tourism."   I'll let you know if I hear or see any more info.  The cost of plane tickets are exorbitant!!!!

musicmom - thanks for the info about the  Iphone app - I'll definitely let him know about that.  He's there now - called from ship phone last night.  I can tell he's going through some culture shock.   Still trying to find his way around.  I'm so glad I have you guys here for support.

Our Son is supposed to report in Yokuska on Nov. 11th.  Of course that date is nebulous at best.  I am happy for him, freaked for us, wondering about what your advice would be as we prepare for him to go.  What do you wish you had know then?  I am so happy I found you all!

Hello everyone -  It's been quite a while since I've been up here.  My son is in Yokosuka now and has been for a little over a month.

Rominpa - My son got a cell phone over there (iphone).  He got an app called Text Free with Voice.  I have an iphone also and got the same app.  We can talk to each other free with that app as long as both of us have it and are making the call through the app.  It's kind of hard to explain how it works but it's great.

I have to brag and say my son made Chief Petty Officer! He is also going to Norfolk, VA.  First time in his 10 year career he will be within driving distance of me!!!  I am so happy.

It is tough for us moms to be so very proud of our kids serving and at the same time not see them often enough with all their travels.

Blondie & Forrestsmom - Thanks to both of you for the info - very helpful!  He's actually going to be assigned to a ship - USS Lassen.
