Hi all - my son is on his way over to Yokosuka today.  I've heard that his cell phone won't work over there, so does anyone know how long it will probably take for him to get another phone?  Is that something they offer them at the base?  Also, will he have another place to call me when he arrives?  Sorry for all the questions - just a little nervous for him!

Good for you, anchorsmom.  Xmas tickets are more expensive....

Good thing you could plan and purchase this far ahead.  Did Priceline let you approve  the Korea Air flights or you're obligated to take what they give you?

Hello anchorsmom,

I just bought tickets for a visit around Christmas.  I know that come

Oct. 1st, the fuel surcharge is supposed to drop down some.  When searching,

you basically see a ticket price and then the price effectively doubles by added taxes and the fuel surcharge.  I got no help from travel agencies because we're flying economy and because I wasn't ready to book tours and such right now, given the uncertainty of how much contact and when we'll get time with our son.  This is sad, because we'll be there 3 weeks and will certainly need booking help at that time.

Travel agents make money on business class, 1st class and tours, hotels, car rentals etc.  We're flying JAL to Haneda (HND) from SFO direct, most flights originate in LAX and go to Narita (NRT); which is 2 hours further NE from Tokyo.  This is a complication in terms of getting picked up by your loved one.  Yokosuka is below Tokyo.

Also,  we had decided we could not hold up  to the 30 hour plus (1 stop) trips through China Air.  A very good site to get your bearings is  http://www.ravimontenegro.com/Japan/travel.html

We wound up buying from flights24.com, they're based out of LA.  They figure in

travel insurance into their booking, which you can decline and they seem to charge a $50 service charge per ticket at the end.  You are given a chance to decline the travel insurance.  Once I had the booking I contacted JAL immediately to get their official Record number for us as well as making seat assignments.

I tried looking up consolidators but the prices were no better, Priceline wouldn't work because they don't offer the non-stop option.......

Maybe you should walk in to your friendly local travel agent and talk things over.......

USO has been great : ) His name wasn't on any list for military transport but now they have his orders so I think he'll get out on the next flight.  He's emailing his sponsor to let him know about the problems so he will get there.  He just has a delay of 5 days in Seattle.  Would have been nice to have him at home for a few more days but what do you do? (sigh)

I haven't, but I have heard when the ships have changes in plans so do others. I have learned "semper gumby" from my son.

There is a sailor rescue list and also USO who could help if he is in need of tlc or someone in the neighborhood...check that group

Hello everyone - My son is hopefully going to be on his way to Yokosuka on Tuesday.  He has run into quite a bit of trouble with the military transport from Seattle Sea-Tac.  Has anyone else had problems making connections with that?  It's kind of been a messl

We went at Christmas two years ago from LAX.  We stayed in Tokyo and our son came up and stayed with us. If you stay in Tokyo try to get a hotel near the train stations since you will be using them all the time. Also, if you want to do a lot of sight seeing then you need get get there before Christmas. Everything is closed on December 23rd for a holiday and then again the week of New Years a lot of the museums are closed, too. I know it is a long way but we took the Bullit train to Hiroshima. I would recommend doing that if you think this will be your one and only trip to Japan. We did it and I would recommend it. It did take up a whole day-half a day getting there, visiting the Peace Museum, walking around the area, and then back on the train to Tokyo.  I agree it is cold and you will need heavy coat, gloves, scarf and hat.  We are also going to be over there for Christmas this year.  We'll be flying out of SFO.
