@Alaska mom

We went thru this last year. My son had been there about 8 months hated it and was talking discharge too. he was speaking to a lady therapist type doctor at the hospital.   he has now been there 18 months , not 100% better, but he is staying in and plugging along.  He doesn't love his job and says he feels like a square peg in a round circle in the Navy.   But he has decided "it is what it is" and he is just going to do his time and then get out.  He has now started having some more fun, so that is helping.

Good Luck!  I wanted to call someone too, but I was completely out of the loop.

@Pilarcita30  Welcome to the group.
1st before you make big plans make sure the ship he's gonna be on will be in port and what chances he has of getting leave while you are there. newbies, don't always get the choice schedules.
 Yokosuka is a nice city, I got to visit there in March.  The train system there is great..If you are planning on exploring Japan, I'd recommend getting a JR rail pass before you go. (sailor can't get one..has to be bought in USA before going)  but can safe a bunch of $ while there .   If you are planning on just sticking around the Yokosuka area you might not need the rail pass.
Are you on facebook at all or the Navy for Moms site there . I have pictures of Yokosuka and other parts of Japan posted there.   feel free to private message me for more details if you like.

Welcome PattiP,  safe travels to your son.  I got to visit Yokosuka recently myself and it seems like a nice enough community.   although it's half way around the world from me and the US phones don't work from there...so be patient on expecting to hear from him.   I don't hear from mine nearly enough, no matter where the ship is,  He is on the Antietam one that travels with the GW.

Anyone know If USS John S. McCain is at port or out to sea. I have not heard from my son since Feb.26.  Its not like him, I am really worried.

@azmchavez have a great trip.  I know mine was an adventure, SO glad I went, wish I could of stayed longer.   If you haven't already get a travel book from a book store,  but I really liked Kamakura and the Snow monkey park in Yudanaka. It's a bit of a train ride there and back, but that JR pass really paid for itself.  We stayed overnight  near the Monkey park at a Japanese traditional motel named Bozanso   found it online and it was great Heday the host there was wonderful, traditional style mats/pads  on floor but had it's own hot springs. very nice reasonably priced place, Other than that we didn't get to Kyota but it was supposed to be nice and spend some time in Tokyo and go up the Tokyo Tower,  If you like Kitkats.. they have a bunch of different flavors of them there... found them at convenience stores, train stations etc.   Convenience stores aka 7-11 are everywhere...sell boxed food for lunches, drinks, etc.  Picture menus were a good thing.   Have a great time!  I've got pictures posed on fb if you are there at all look me up Elane Lacroix

@Steffanib75,  mine is terrible about communication!!  He is also on the Antietam.   I know they had some BIG inspections, etc coming up early April, so extra long hours for a lot of them! If he was using comm lines on the ship they may be working on those as the whole ship is being worked on in some way trying to get things ready to go back out to sea.   Mine lives off base and I haven't heard from him since I left visiting him on March 27th.  I know he's been online on occasion..as I've seen the fb messaged seen at time on my messages to him.   The USO...does a great job of getting cakes to the sailors but I think you need week 10 days notice there are links to it on several fb sites are you part of any of the Navy for Mom sites there?
