Agapemommajill, depending on where you live, maybe you could fly Southwest. It is easy to change your tickets with Southwest and they seem to be one of the least expensive airlines.  They also only don't charge for the 1st two checked bags per person.  There are many hotels near the base, but we stayed at the Residence Inn.  They have 2 bedroom suites and serve free breakfast, so that may work well for you. You will probably need a car to get from the airport to the hotel.  There is a shuttle from the Residence Inn that will take you to the base for a price of $3 a person.  We used that, and it was so nice not to have to wait for the huge line of cars waiting to get on base.  (Our shuttle driver knew an easier way)  I would also suggest trying to fly into Milwaukee, because some of the fares are cheaper and it's an easy drive to GL from the airport.  If you fly through Midway or O'Hare, depending on the day of the week and the time of day that arrive, you could have a very long drive around the downtown area of Chicago.

Hey everyone!  My son goes to BC March 8 unless something changes.  We want to start preparing now for the expenses of going to PIR.  Plane tickets are cheaper to buy now, but if something changes, then what?  Also, what is the name of the hotel we stay at there? how much does it cost? And I assume we have to rent a car while we are there, right? There will be 5 of us going so it will be quite expensive.  Please help! Thx!

yes, we did not know about that. We brought her cell phone and computer and had to take them home again -- then I thought I would get them out to her ASAP so sent them Fed Ex.... she ended up having the time to fetch them about a week later -- they were keeping her busy...

mom to sailor @ are you talking about the Lock and Go?  I hear you can store those type of things there until they go to their school..

Who -- there is nothing like cold and snow to motivate you ... she is on track to start her A school in Point Loma southern CA in mid January. She is doing self based computer something training now.  I can't wait to have her less than 2 hours away!!

mom-to sailor-Alli, that is so great to hear. im sure she is just happy to have boot camp behind her. but in some weird way, she'll probably miss it. at times i still do,the friendships and bonds you make can never be broken.
my parents did the same exact thing with the phone ordeal, it eventually worked out =]

i know what winters in chicago can be like, originally being from california, i hated the extreme cold and wind haha. hope she can attempt to stay warm and motivated.

take care

welcome back. My sailor made it through boot camp (but we knew SHE would) -- I was the one having problems. I wish I had known about the place near the large commissary that has storage for cell phones and computers. I took hers back with me and then sent them off to her (Fed Ex - it is fast). She is stationed at Great Lakes and the UPS and FED EX stuff gets to another area that is only open from 7-3 . . . she had a dickens of a time getting her stuff. If I had sent it via the Post Office she would have had it sooner....Live and learn.

mamawalrus,

while in boot camp i thought the majority of the food was actually really good. probably the best navy food your future sailor will have haha.

and its never really crowded because meal times are scheduled for certain time slots by each division
