For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

and maybe you can give yourself a goal to have completed for PIR??

Comment by Sierrascrapper (ETN2) on January 19, 2014 at 11:04am: I like your ideas from your BC letters BeachBunny. I will try to remember that when Jonathan goes in. One of the things my husband tells my son before he leaves for school every day is "Do Good". I think we will include that in the end of our letters. I should ask the band director or asst ifif they had something special they told the kids in band and maybe use that too. It would have special meaning to him. We are planning on staying involved with the marching band after Jonathan leaves, so we will be able to update him on the progress of the band while he is in BC which I think he will like.

Comment by BeachBunny on January 12, 2014 at 3:11pm: Sierrascrapper-oh, how fun, didn't know about the once every 5 year rule for bands, floats are contracted for 5 years min...so glad you got to experience that trip with him before he goes into the Navy....great memory makers for you two...:))

Comment by BeachBunny on January 12, 2014 at 2:09pm: When my son left for bc almost a year ago, in a few days, I wasn't to sure about what to write to him. I wrote him twice a week, he wrote back 3 times. He said he was too busy to write back with training and being on ship staff, which is ok. I wrote about funny and goofy things going on in our small town, sports news and found odd facts and findings to send to him. Ended every letter with(handwritten): be well, be safe, do your best, we are proud of you...nothing too mushy....after all he was an all league athletic and used to training and pushing himself , nothing too mushy......when I went to PIR all was good, got a great seat against the wall right in front of his division where I had a great view of the roll up doors, I did try a prompt them up by saying "open doors, now"...well, when they finally rolled up, am glad a had tissue, my eyes had liquid pride ,(tears), flowing down my cheeks...when I saw him on the PIR hall floor, I was speechless..he kept asking me if I was ok...Yup he didn't have a clue about the deep Mom feelings I had about him being there. He kept saying," I thought were good with this, I got this Mom". Now, when I see him, he laughs and says "don't get my uniform wet Mom", well, that's b/c am so short and when he hugs me the tears go right on his pocket...just remember to keep letters on the encouraging side, really upbeat, this is really just the first step and goes by fast....and now we end our emails, text or phone calls..with "I got this!"...we both do.....

Comment by Sierrascrapper (ETN2) on January 12, 2014 at 12:29pm: I have kept a journal since my son swore into DEP in June. I don't always write in it, but when I am struggling with the idea of him leaving, I write in it. Or I write down fun stuff we've done and the special moments we have shared.

hi bizibon - very nice-congrats to your SR! I used to write 2 letters at a time-one full of worry and what ifs...and when it got out of my system I could write the 'real' one giving encouragement and support...I also made a journal on my computer and would write daily stuff...

Comment by Sierrascrapper (ETN2) on January 12, 2014 at 3:11am: Hi Beach Bunny! It was an AMAZING experience! The weather was incredible too! Definitely once in a lifetime. You know they only let the same high school perform every 5 years? That was the last time our band got to be in the parade. Now that it's over, the idea of how soon my son leaves is REALLY sinking in. Thanks for asking :)
