Rather than self-addressed envelopes, send address labels; those envelopes from the RTC are great to see in the mail.

At our son's "Anchors Away Party" we passed out paper with Dear XXXX @ Boot Camp at the top and a blank envelope. Guests were asked to draft a quick letter to our recruit. As soon as we receive his address we will start addressing and dropping an envelope to two in the mail every day so he will have lots of good thoughts from home. Of course, my husband and I will be writing too.

Sweet idea! That would be cool to use when we go places that he would wish he was with us like a camping trip or cutting our Christmas tree.

oh that is a good idea!

another fun one is to take a pic of your soon to be Sailor and make a life size cutout of his face and put it on foam core board or heavy card stock and 'take him with you'

hi new mommas and welcome!!  Smiley

I read a REALLY good idea on FB today. Take a photo of your family holding a sign like We Miss You or something more positive like Thinking of You and send the photo in your letter to your SR.

thats great Sierrascrapper!  I started a journal on the day he left for RTC...it really helped me not get so emotional when writing to him...

Mommadukes...Hugs to you. Start writing as soon as you say see ya later to your son. I've been keeping a journal since my son swore into DEP. It helps me when my emotions get the best of me and I look forward to reading it while he is gone as I tried to record all the LASTS in it. Keeping a journal might help you too while he is in BC. It will be something you will cherish forever. I found that I started writing a bit of poetry again after my sign signed up. I've been keeping it in my journal.

Good idea Spomss. I am still trying hard to think of stuff that might interest my son while he is in BC. He is kind of into football, but not like his Mom. LOL And...it won't be football season yet while he's gone. Im hoping that keeping up with the marching band will help give us something special to write about. I have been collecting brain teaser books to tear out pages and send to him while he's in BC. Oh and in our twins group on N4M, we came up with a Mad Lib about BC. I'll share a link to it soon. It needs a bit more tweaking, but it's funny.

As far as empty nest goes, his twin will most likely still be with us until the fall which is after my son's PIR. But we will be busy getting the brother ready for sending off to college. I think I will be spending a lot of time purging closets and getting rid of clutter so we can move into a smaller place after they are gone.
