PACT Moms

Let's chat about our wonderful sons and daughters who have chosen the PACT program.

Hello

It has been a long time since I have posted and I am sorry. I hope everyone has been able to connect with others in the PACT program. My son is now 3 and a half years in and it has been a great experience. He thought he wanted to be an AM. When he got on the ship, he was put with the AO’s. Now he is an AD3. It was best for him to start PACT because we didn’t know much about the Navy and he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. This has been a good route for him.

The STA-21 program isn't right for everyone, and you must have recommendations from your CO and have excellent reviews on file for inspections, PT, etc. I don't know exactly how it works as I've only scratched the surface on reading about it. There may still be some stipulations about which rate you want to study for and if there are "openings" but my daughter isn't that far down that path, obviously. With your son being older sailor, he will likely be chosen for leadership positions at bootcamp; at least that has been my daughter's experience with those older sailors from her PIR group. Tell him to have a SUPER attitude and keep his head down and work hard in boot and it will pay off in HUGE dividends for his permanent file. As for being disappointed, yeah, it happened to my daughter, too, but after a couple of weeks she determined to make the best of the situation and her attitude really made the difference in her motivation to succeed.

Tlh63, yes, my daughter is also an E-3. You can Google STA-21 and visit the Navy websites for a BUNCH of information regarding STA-21. It stands for Seaman to Admiral. It is an officer's program that your sailor must apply for. There is an age limit to who can apply so your son should ask his recruiter if this a possibility. It means that if he was accepted to the program he would spend 8 weeks in officer school and then go to an approved college to finish his degree in the rate he wants to be. The school must have a JROTC unit and he is paid to go to school. He must be able to complete his degree within 36 months or less, and they tack on those months to his service contract

Comment by navymom25 on June 18, 2015 at 2:06pm

thanks Depthcharge4. My son also has almost 3 years of college credit so he is going in as E3. . what is STA-21 program? I am writing all of this down so thanks for all the info from everyone! I feel my son is disappointed to have to wait until January for BC and this took some of the "air out of his balloon"

Hello tlh63! Welcome to the PACT moms page! I've been following your discussion since I got off work this morning. My daughter is also SPact because the HM rate she wanted is full. She is home for a couple more days and will be heading out on Sunday for her first duty station with the Seabees. It is a little different for her, since she has some college, but hasn't completed a 4 year, only a two year, minus 2 classes. So she can strike for a rate in the coming months and then apply for the STA-21 program and essentially try to get the rate she wants through the "back door" of the PACT program. She is content to work hard and keep positive till someone takes notice of her attitude and work ethic. I firmly believe in the Sovereignty of God and that His plan for her will far outdo anything she or I can plan for her life. Already she has been recognized for academic achievement at PACT school in Great Lakes so she is off to a great start. Keep the faith in the PACT program and stick with this page for the best information and encouragement. Again, welcome!

My son is APACT and is currently on deployment. We have only gotten to talk once when he was in a port. He emails often but I don't get many details of what his plan is. He has mentioned talking to different Chiefs about his options. He seems to be figuring it out. For him this is probably best because I tend to try to "fix" things for him. LOL. He has grown up so much and is happy. Of course he has had some bad days when everyone is grumpy but he is doing really well.

Just talked with my son about the DIR and he is going to ask about that. I know he really wants SWCC as first choice, which scares me but I support whatever he decides.

Thanks. He won't tell me anything really. If he stays "undesignated" he will go to BC in January which sounds like really fund time to be in ILL especially since we are from AL and don't really have much winter.  I am a voc rehab counselor and since he was a teen have been making him do career interest inventories and other testing to try to help him (which of course made him do just the opposite of what I recommended) he has tried college and has always worked at various jobs but nothing ever sparked a desire to do. He feels this will give him focus, structure, and direction. I agree but still think of him as that teen I used to sit up at night waiting for. He moved back in with us after returning from college which I think of him still has a child rather than the grown man he is.

I found this Navy learning and development roadmap for S-Pact I have reading over. Has your son chosen a path yet to become undesignated?
