My son will soon be at Pearl Harbor before leaving to meet his ship already underway. He had his car shipped there. What is the procedure for getting it registered? I read on DMV website http://www.dmv.com/hi/hawaii/vehicle-registration

"If you are a non-resident active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces or a non-resident full-time student attending a Hawaii college or university, you are not required to title or register your vehicle". Is this the case?

Does that mean you can be stationed there but your legal state of residency is elsewhere you're ok?

Welcome Daniella! This website IS very helpful!  Don't know what I would do with out it!  I usually can tell my sailor stuff he has no idea about, but then that I have done his whole life lol.  But this is his job not mine. Oh well I least we are well informed.

Aloha, and thank you for accepting me a member for this group. I am still new to this website, but so far it is really helpful and I like it so much :)

My son plans on taking his cell phone with him on his up coming deployment on the USS Paul Hamilton but I know he will get jacked with international charges if he makes calls. I don't know if texting works the same even if he is able to get a signal somewhere. With the new ios6 software update for iphones he can facetime using wi-fi instead of using air time. How often would they be at a port where they could get wi-fi and would they even allow them to use it due to security reasons? So basically is it even wise to take their cell phone? What are the alternatives? Thanks, I'm new here. My son (now home on leave, YEA!) will soon depart for Pearl as his 1st duty station and join his ship soon after already underway.

Well he said that it may change depending on if the Cheyenne is out when he gets there too.  He is an LS.

Ohiomom1292 - My son is also on the USS Cheyenne.  He was originally assigned to the USS Houston but was transferred before even stepping on board the Houston.

Thank you for the information Defiance Mom I will make sure I have it all tonight because I sure don't want to go through that and my luck I would miss his graduation because of something I forgot!

Forgot to mention the sub he will be on is the USS Cheyenne!

Ohiomom1292 - Our son was also from Ohio and spent time in Groton.  We were able to make multiple trips to see him and his BESS graduation was one of them.  This is probably very basic information that you already know, but make sure you have all your vehicle information in order to be able to drive on base.  I had my Driver's License and Proof of Insurance . . . but my insurance card was expired.  I had neglected to put my new card in my purse and was not able to drive onto the base until I had the card replaced.  I was able to get my husband to go to our home and fax a copy of the front and back of the card . . . but he wasn't happy about it.  It was just an unnecessary delay that could have been avoided.

Enjoy your visit to Groton and your visit with your son.  Good luck.

Thank you for letting me in your group!  My son heads to Pearl the first part of Oct. he is a LS Submariner.  This is his first duty station.  My name is Tracy.  His dad and I are very excited for him. Actually headed to Groton next Thursday for his BESS graduation. Then bringing him home for a few weeks. Can't wait to see his face in person!
