We are getting to go to visit our son the end of this month for his birthday.  It is a 14 hour drive for us, so we will head down on a Thursday afternoon and stop part way.  That way we can get down there at a reasonable time on Friday, so we get the whole weekend there.  Any recommendations on a reasonable, clean place to stay, close to base?

Amy you are lucky it is only a 10 hour drive. I don't have a choice but to fly when I go there. It would be at least a 24 hour drive for us. I am planning to go down there to visit as soon as I can though.

I don't know how your son feels, but my daughter loves it down there!

I am hoping to get over that way at least once. :) I have heard that the Riverwalk is a must-see. Not looking forward to the ten hour drive, however, to get to see him will be more than worth it!

Cori, what do you enjoy doing? I ask because there are so many things to do that I would like to narrow it down for you.

Amy, if you get down to visit us while your son is here let us know.

So my son leaves for GL in 21 days.  Hard to believe how fast the past eight months have gone. I know I will miss him  but I am so excited for him!

jenny: my son said he would start Monday, and since he was dental, he might even be done sooner than the 14-16 weeks. He hasn't always had the correct info though, so he may be mistaken. I hate to rush time, but I'll be glad when these 5 years are over.

I agree Amy, we did not have enough time with our Sailors! It is a lot of waiting right now. They won't even start classes for at least 4 weeks.

Hi all. My son just got to San Antonio for A school on Saturday night. I just didn't get enough time with him at PIR :(  I am hoping to come and visit before he leaves San Antonio. I am nervous about where he will go from there. The "not knowing" is killing me.

Just wanted to wish a Happy Birthday to our Medical corpsman. Today is the anniversary of the beginning of using shipboard medics for Marines and Navy.

Sitting here waiting to find out if my son is leaving tomorrow instead of April 3rd. Wish his recruiter would hurry up and call!
