My condolences go out to the family and friends of Petty Office 2nd Class Mark Mayo. I cannot know the pain you are feeling right now but just know our thoughts and prayers go out to you at this time. My son is the same age and stationed on the Mahan as well. I know your son's selfless and brave act saved others. He served his country with honor and I'm so sorry for your loss. May the good Lord keep His loving arms around you during this time and comfort you along the way. No greater sacrifice can be made than laying down your life so others may live. God Bless you Mark Mayo!

My son is an MA stationed at Norfolk on the USS Iwo Jima.  He called me the day before yesterday and told me of the tragedy on the USS Mahan, my thoughts and prayers are with the Sailors on the Mahan.  God bless the Sailor who gave his life I am praying for his family.

Stefan'smom, Thank you for taking the time to post this.  Praying for every sailor on that ship, I can't even imagine how all of them must be feeling right now, including the family members of the civilian involved.  It's always so hard when we can't make sense of things, and why they happen.

I was not aware of the difficulties that your family was facing, but you are all added to my prayers as well.  If I can be of any help, send me a private message, I'll give you my contact info.

My son said that yes, there is one coming up very soon, but he didn't have many more details.  He suggested that you contact the Ombudsman.  He told me where they were going, but I don't think I'm allowed to post it on here.  If you need help contacting the Ombudsman for more info, scroll back through the notes, the instructions are there.  Hope you get to go, that would be awesome!

Just said another long airport goodbye to my sailor today....boy those hugs are good.

disonn63: the news video was right above the article that you posted.  I didn't find it the first time I looked, but then later my son went back and it was there.  Then I sent the link to some friends of mine, and some of them were able to see it, and others said it wouldn't pull up.....(???)

MrsMink, thank you to you as well for the JLS photography site, loved all those pics!

I do wish we would all have had more time to sort out who was who.  My husband was the easiest to pick out.  Big bearded guy wearing a bright orange fluorescent T-shirt.  He wore it deliberately, so that Danny could find us.  It worked so well that Danny told his shipmates about a mile out...."That's either an orange buoy, or my father."  ha  The other sailors were then using my husband as a reference point to find their own families.  "Ok, see the guy in orange? Two rows up, and four over...."  etc...   Ha.

If u check out JLS photography on Facebook there's over 300 pics and also google up USS Mahan homecoming or USS Mahan news. There's few links to news videos enjoy! Sorry I didn't meet any one of you but maybe you noticed us.. We were the deaf family with a toddler in sailors dress. My daughter made the papers in Norfolk... It was a wonderful experience!
