JTMOM you will love being at the dock when they return.  The Ombudsman will be posting instructions, but your son will be asked for a list of who will be there, you name will be on a list, but the last deployment my son went on they didn't even check the list for our names.  Once there, you will park and they will have chairs set up for us to wait for them to come into port.  Last time the navy band was there, it was very cool.  There is a company that makes banners for returning military for free.  http://www.buildasign.com/Troops that's their website.  They get off the ship by rank.  He can also take you back on the ship for a tour :)  You will never regret your trip to watch the ship come in.

Hi Ladies!!  I want to thank you all for your comments.  I read them and it is amazing to me when another Mom has the same exact thoughts as I do!  It reassures me.  My son has asked for beef jerky, gum, and those pouches to add to water bottles.  I too loaded up a flat rate box with those requested items, along with fruit snackes, granola bars, pop tarts, slim jims, raisons,  corn nuts, etc.  This time I added a package of gag lottery tickets.  Thought he might have fun pulling off a prank on a shipmate.  I never thought about microwaveable items - that's a good tip.

My son said that Oct 31st, Halloween, marks their half way point in their deployment.  Seems like he's been gone forever, and he's only halfway thru the trip.

Does anybody know the process of getting on base for their return?  My son really wants us to be on that dock to greet him home....

I send them every week because they can take forever to get to him.  Plus this time around he is sharing with those that aren't receiving boxes.  His first deployment he didn't share anything  lol  I've found microwaveable minute rice, mashed potatoes, he loves easy mac, Chef Boyardee pasta, Hormel and Barilla have nice meals too.  All shelf stable so they make the trip with ease.  His first deployment I had no idea that they had a microwave lol  Sam's club is my favorite place these days  :)  I haven't sent him gum, but that's a good idea.  Plus I work for ConAgra foods and I sent him a bunch of slim jims and David's seeds.

Thanks, ptcitychick & kathim, I feel better about not hearing from him very often.  What makes it hard is when I see one of the wives I know on FB posting that she is getting phone calls and he posts on facebook all the time.  I keep thinking, I know I'm just his mom, but gee, I would love a phone call.  My son doesn't have a wife or girlfriend, so I should be hearing from him more often, or at least I think I should  lol  Again, thanks, I do feel better!

I send a box out every weekend.  When he's not working hard, he's been working out so he wanted some Cliff bars, and I put some Propel drink packets in too...especially after seeing the photo of him on the Benfold facebook page of him with a water bottle, the water looks nasty  lol  I don't do the fancy theme boxes because all he wants is FOOD.  So I send lots of snack foods and microwaveable meals.  Plus cookies and things.  Also sent him a DVD with a home video on it, he loved it.  We are putting together another DVD from when we had his baby girl for a few days, hope to get that out to him next weekend.

Have a great weekend, ladies!!

Well, its been a week and a half since I've had a real email from my son.  I got a tiny one today (because I had another sailor tell him to write to me) that said, he's working a lot and tired.  Sigh

Ladies, I'm glad I could help.  I am so happy you all watched.  Here's a local TV's station coverage of the ship leaving, maybe you will be able to see your sailors...
