so...my son passed at meps...now he is just waiting to get a call from his recruiter about a "job"...how long does this take? he doesnt even know what job they are looking for at this point...he wanted air/rescue diver...but we are pretty sure his color blindness rules him out for this...i just don't understand any of this...what if he gets stuck doing something he doesnt want to do? will they make sure that he is placed in something that interests him? are they just gonna call him up one day...and poof he is gone the next? i am trying to accept his decision to do this..it is just hard being kept out of the loop...this is the first time my son has done something like his on his own, and this is going to change his life for years!!! i just want him to be happy....
my daughter just went to boot camp when she went to meps she was offered a job right than. She went in Jan and left for boot camp in March. I miss her so much have not got to talk to her yet. I just got her box with all her things. That is sad.
He needs to talk to his recruiter my daughter was told that even if she took the job and if another comes up that she want she would take it. So tell him to speak with his recruiter. ok
It really depends on how he scored on the asvap(spelling?) It is not like it used to be many years ago, you sign up and they take you . You have to qualify for a job. My son did good on the test and listed like 4 jobs he wanted . He waited for almost a yr to get the one that he really wanted. He ended up going to MEPS several times, and unexpectedly got a call from his recruiter one night at 6pm saying be at the office at 3 am we are driving to Nashville your job is open. He had a Jan ship date but asked for sooner so he got Oct. He is now in San Antonio .He completed BC on 12/17 got to come home for 1 week at Christmas then had to be in San Antonio by 12/27 didn't start his A school till like 1/3 and I think after that they had to wait another week to really begin. He finished A school in Feb and is now in K9 Training still in San Antonio and will graduate that May 13 then off to Pax River Maryland. Be prepared for the ride , you will be surprised how much he grows up ! Hope this helps if you have any other questions just ask. Stay on this site it will be your LIFELINE while he is away and DON'T MISS BOOT CAMP graduation if at all possible . Best wishes to you all and many Blessings your way!
My son is in the same position. It's frustrating when you don't know what's going on, I feel the same way. Meps will based his job placement on his asvab line scores and he gets 5-10 picks I was told. I spoke to a navy counselor and was told that my son should take what is offered to get his foot in the door since the Navy is so overmanned. He has to commit 2 years to that job and can change rate afterwards. My son is willing to take anything at this point and willing to tough it out if it turns out he doesn't like the job, but that's my son. He's done waiting around and wants to get his life going and I don't blame him. Well, goodluck to your son. Everything will work out. As everyone is saying here on N4M, "Patience is a virtue". Keep in touch!
I have twin daughters. One was just stationed in Guam two days before the earthquake in Japan. The other is leaving in June for Boot camp. She had to wait for the job she wanted. It takes a while, but I am holding on as long as I can. Enjoy the time you have.Make sure he gets in to what he wants to do.
My son is leaving April 6th for bootcamp. He was given a job at MEPS that he really didn't want. The ASVAB scores do have alot to do with it, however, we were also told that they also look at the needs they have a that specific time. They are able to apply for different jobs while in DEP, as he did, when they have open positions. He ended up signing a new contract for a position he wanted.
My son went to MEPS in February. He went in knowing what job he wanted. He got his preferred job right away. I didn't realize that was so unusual these days, as when my husband joined the Navy, he, too, went in with a specific job in mind and got it right away. I think there are so many factors that play into this equation: ASVAB scores, etc. In my son's case, he knew he wanted to go CTI and was not going to accept anything else. So in preparation for that, his recruiter sent him to MEPS ahead of time to take the DLAB (language aptitude test). So my main suggestion would be: If the rate he's interested in requires a qualifying test other than the ASVAB, make sure he takes it ahead of time. That way when he goes down to meet with the career counselor, his scores are already available and they won't have to wait for them.
my son has been battling meps for over a year... due to being UNDER weight.... but FINALLY gained the 10 pounds needed.had to RETAKE the asvab due to new requirements from the Navy . scored better.. went BACK to meps with his recruiter, qualified.. YAY... was asked several questions of what his interests are and what conditions he would like to work under... and the offer him Sonar... he agreed... and a ship date was set... NOVEMBER 8th... yea its april now .... so I've got 7 months left with him.. I know that date can change... and he could be gone tomorrow.. It happened to me when I enlisted in the Navy ... left 3 weeks before i was supposed to... I guess i didn't realize that they can wait to offer you a rating... good to luck to you and your sailor.... it will be the best time of his life... It was for me... and it will be for my son...
My son got his call yesterday from his recruiter...he swears in on monday...he is going to be a hospital corpsman (i really am not sure what this job involves?)...he goes to bootcamp in december...that gives me a lil more time with him...yeah :)
Hi All. My son just picked his job, Damage Control. I was surprised. he said it was the best of what they offered. (wants to be a fireman later in life)Does anyone have any advice on this Damage Control position? From what his recruiter says he has too intern 3 months at a time for each job then he can pick the one he feels best about. He is leaving in August, we expected Oct. I am getting nervous for him. This is going to sound stupid but what if he gets sea sick? Really, will they help him? I have visions of him sick and everyone laughing-Am I ridiculas or what?

He doesn't have to say yes to any job, at this point, he isn't in the Navy, just DEP.
The process can take months, as there are many qualified candidates all vying for the same jobs. This is the famous Navy "hurry up and wait".
