Moms of IS (Intelligence Specialist) sailors.

My son has found the perfect job for a teenager! When I ask him, "What are you doing?", he honestly tells me, "Sorry, Mom, I can't tell you."

    Carl and Irene,

I'm so happy you got there safely!!!  If you do see Chris today - be sure to wish him a Happy Birthday!!!!

Enjoy your visit with you son!!!  Aren't you glad you're not having to buy his clothes for him anymore?!!!!

  • Laura

Congratulations to the intelligence community for a job well done!
  • Mary (Chris' mom)

    Amen!

Question-my husband goes to dam neck for A school on saturday but doesn't start school until the 23rd---what does that mean as far as phases--will he be phase 1 when he arrives and stay phase 1 until approx 2 weeks after he starts school or should he be phase 2 by the time class starts? Thanks
  • Anna

Yes, and congratulations to our Seals also!!

What a great day to be a sailor (and a veteran sailor)!!!!!

  • Mary (Chris' mom)

Devon, He will phase up fine I'm sure. Phasing up is pretty much a thing of behavior. If he follows orders, is not late for muster, shows up on time for his duties, etc he will phase up. Go Intel...go Seals!

  • proudmama(ship 7 div 112)

Hey Jenn, My daughter is already started school and graduates from A school June 24.  She is doing great and loves it.
  • mmiles 11/186

My son goes thru PIR on JUne 3rd then on June 4th he will be shipping out to Dam Neck too!
  • JM-ISmomx2

Our son grads C school this Friday. 2 weeks leave to come home to get married then back to Dam Neck for NEIC. So proud of what he has accomplished.
  • Devon

My husband is there now--got there sat and we just got home today from visiting him :). It was great to see him. We stayed 2 nights on the dam neck base and 2 on the oceana base---FYI-oceana rooms are so much nicer! The beach on the annex is fabulous!! And everyone we met while we were there was wonderful. (though traveling alone w 3 small children was NOT fun!--I do hope to go back to see him again over memorial day weekend since they have fri-mon off----only bummer right now, hubby found out he is supposed to be on watch on memorial day, hoping he is able to find someone to trade with!)
  • NavyWife31

My husband has been in IS "A school" since Feb. and is due to graduate from "A School" the 2nd week in June.  Then he will start "C School" I havent seen him since Feb. 18th when he graduated from Boot Camp.  I have 2 small children and we all miss him SO much. Can't wait to see him again.  Thinking about visiting him in between A & C School. Hoping he has a little bit of a break.
  • NavyMomKim

My son is at Dam Neck now and will graduate June 3rd from A school.  He will continue with C school there, we just do not know when that starts yet.
  • Sharon

My son grads C school on the 26th.  So proud of him for sticking with it!
  • Valerie (Brittany's Mom)

    Hello, Everyone...

We just put our daughter on a plane for Hawaii a few days ago. This is her first assignment since graduating C school and we are so excited for her. She was able to stop off and visit us in CA for 12 days before she went on to HA. We had lots of things to do for her...getting new tires on her car and getting it ready to be shipped. Now she is gone and it's quiet again...and I thought VA seemed far away...

God bless all of our Military, wherever they are, and bring peace to their families that are at home waiting for them.

Hello IS Moms.  My son arrived at Dam Neck last Friday and is on hold.  After boot camp, Dam Neck seems like paradise.  He is loving the privacy and the freedom.  I would love to hear more about life at Dam Neck.  I am planning to visit soon and would appreciate your guidance re:  where to stay, what to do.  Sounds like the Navy Lodge at Oceana is a good option.  I am looking forward to this part of my son's Navy experience.
  • NavyWife31

My husband says that the Galley is worse then Boot Camp, it is Pretty bad. But other then that, if he is good and earns his Liberty he should have much more freedom then he did in Boot Camp...
  • NavyWife31

Also we just got our first orders, Washington DC, this will be a big change for us, since we are currently living in California.
  • Janae' *My Love is HOME :)*

Laurelbc, your sailor could also get u a Rooney at the navy lodge on dam neck. I've stayed there before and it was like 25 a night but I think they have gone up now.
  • Janae' *My Love is HOME :)*

There's also lots to do around there. You can go to the beach, walk on the strip, go to the mall, mini golf, movies, etc. I love it in that area.
  • Sara

Navy Wife- my husband just got to Washington DC a week ago! My son and I will be moving there hopefully in a week, we are still on a wait list of base housing so we are going to be staying on Andrews AFB in a temporary lodging facility. Message me if you have any questions and I'll help as much as I can!

Laurel- I'm sure your son will enjoy Dam Neck. I always stayed at the Navy lodge at Dam Neck, the private standard rooms are now 56 dollars a night but there is a shared room (you share a bathroom with another person) those are 28/night. the hotel is right on the beach, so that was fun!  If you go off base and down to the strip/boardwalk area there is plenty of restaurants and stores and such.

  • mmiles 11/186

Thanks for all the grerat info!! My son goes through PIR this Friday then he is off to Dam Neck as well!!
  • Devon

I was just there visiting my husband and the navy lodge is just like a standard hotel room (2 double beds, private bath) and is 86/night. The gateway inns and suites has more options--we stayed in a trans suite and a VIP suite (66 and 76 per night). We stayed at oceana last time at the gateway---much nicer over there to be honest and same price. (but then u r further from ur sailor) dam neck has a great beach, oceana has a pool(free to mil and their guests) and also waterpark(very small but only $5 a person, kids under 6 free). And my husband also says the food is terrible! And the barracks AC broke and it is currently miserable in their rooms :(. Cheers
  • laurelbc 11/180

Navy Lodge it is.  thank you Sara, Devon, NavyWife and Janae.
  • laurelbc 11/180

Thanks all.  I did hear they fixed the air conditioning in the baracks yesterday.  Devon, hopefully your husband's room is getting better.  I heard the food was ok, but my son commented that the civilian staff on base are SO nice.  I think it's a Virginia Beach thing but I am grateful.  Mmiles, we chatted on PIR group pages.  So glad your son is coming.  Enjoy PIR.  It is awesome and memorable.
  • Janae' *My Love is HOME :)*

    Laurelbc, Your welcome.
  • laurelbc 11/180

Lisa, it is great, but it is no longer a novelty to talk to Mom.  I guess I should be glad we are going back to normal.  My son lost weight too and grew taller at boot.  He said Dam Neck is better than boot in every way.   He doesn't seem to care too much about what he eats, so he will survive.  I think 12 guys from Boot PIR 5/26 went to Dam Neck.  So glad to have them there.
  • Mom2aSailor

My daughter said the AC got fixed also! :) she was dying of heat for a bit there.  Caution your sailors on not getting caught up in the "partying" aspect of being in virginia beach. 5 classmates of my daughters got in trouble during Memorial Day weekend for underage drinking and being drunk.  :/  I think the freedom of being out of bootcamp got the better of them.

I'll have to ask my daughter about navy lodge, i was looking at hotel rooms and they are outrageous this time of year in VB.

Hope this group becomes more active... i miss my bc days of an active group! :)

  • proudmama(ship 7 div 112)

When does everybody's kids graduate from A school? Mine graduates June 24

  • Devon

It is irritating that some of the kids can't behave because it often screws things up for everyone. W regards to memorial day weekend--yes, some got into trouble and now there is talk of not giving the group a long weekend for July 4th--which is so frustrating to those of us w families! The kids and I would love for my husband to come home for that weekend since he will have phased all the way up by then, but if some of the younger guys keep getting in trouble this may not happen. (sorry--I am rather irritated about this at the moment. Lol)
  • Devon

Oh, and my husband grads aug 5th I believe
  • NavyWife31

@Proudmama My Husband Graduates A School on June 10th, and I still don't know when he starts C School, but I do know, that his C School is only 5 weeks long. Very happy about that. @mom2aSailor I heard the same thing about the sailors getting in trouble over the Memorial Day weekend, but I also heard that these Sailors were not supposed to be drinking at all(not just because of age, but because they were on phase 1 Liberty), and had a Curfew Phase 1 is a lot like lockdown lol, but yes they did get in big trouble, luckly my husbands not a drinker and is very dedicated to his studies...
  • Devon

At navywife31--what duty station did your husband get?
  • NavyWife31

Washington DC, not really sure about the actual base, because I hear that there are multiple bases.
  • NavyWife31

@Devon, I feel your frustration with the single guys screwing it up for everyone else because, it's true that everyone has to pay. My husband says that there have been some big no no's going on lately at school, like notes being taken out of class when its supposed to be confidential, drinking, and the school has been not kept clean(because of this they have been banning food in school for a while) he also said they have to wear the peanut butter uniforms from here on out in A school, as a form of punishment.
  • NavyMomKim

My son is suppose to graduate A school today (june 3rd) and then be back to Dam Neck June 13th to start C school.

  • Devon

I heard all of that too. Sucks for our husbands who don't want to deal w the childish behavior(tho I rem what is was like to be 18--lol)
And dc--we are hoping for that since it is pretty much where we already are! I would love to not have to move and deal w all of that--but of course I know it is going to happen at some point--it would be nice to stay put and easy into military life, u know? :)
  • laurelbc 11/180

Moms and Wives:  I hear you on the dumb kids drinking.  My son told me the story as it was his first weekend at Dam Neck and he was disappointed.  However, as on college campuses, there are some trouble makers at Dam Neck.  We heard about knuckleheads at Boot camp, but it turned out none of their Moms were on N4M.  I think there may be a connection there :)  Hopefully peer pressure will stop this.  And Mom2aSailor.  A bunch of us came in from PIR last week and we were N4M Maniacs!  Let's go :)
  • Mom2aSailor

Laurel Oh good! :) I was dying here with the lack of interaction!  LOL

My daughter's class there are 5 females to 20 males... let's just say they have had to deal with some unpleasant harrassing and bullying from the males. This has REALLY gotten me upset!! I texted her today and told her they all need to go and make a complaint.. it needs to be nipped in the bud quickly, they have a long way to go til A school is over and it will just get worse if these "boys" are allowed to continue.  She said they did say something to the leader and that if it continues, they will take further action.   We saw some of this behavior in her div. she was an integrated div. and their RPO was a female and they boys didn't like it and really were jerks to her.  :(

Glad we have some action on here!

  • Laura

My son isn't at Damn Neck yet but I am trying to plan ahead.  When are they allowed to have personal computers? personal vehicles? I want to get him a new laptop but I don't know when he will be able to have one, if at all.  Thanks.
  • Devon

Laura, they can have comp right away--u can send it w him from bc if u meet him at the airport w a completely black bag from him to carry it in :)
But, keep in mind there have been many laptop thefts at A schools--(tho prob less at IS because of the higher security, but I don't know). And cars I am not sure--I think once they are in phase 2, but it may be phase 3---I do know they can drive in phase 2 so likely they can have cars but they do need to get permission and a pass for it I am pretty sure. Maybe someone knows for sure?
  • laurelbc 11/180

Mom2aSailor:  that is disturbing.  I was so impressed with my son's division (at least the boys I knew).  They were all so respectful and polite.  Does your daughter have any male peers in her group she can talk to?  A group of good guys can shut down a group of loser guys right away.  If that doesn't work, I would, in this case, encourage your daughter to speak up.  The Navy does not tolerate this kind of unprofessional behavior and I would hate to see these guys go out to the fleet with this kind of attitude.  Let us know how she is.  So sorry.
  • laurelbc 11/180

Laura, we met my son at the airport early the morning he shipped to A school with his laptop, cell phone and IPod in a black backpack.  I know it can't have any logos or colors to be uniform correct.  I don't know for sure about cars, but I think Devon is correct that it is phase 2.  Getting the car on base is complicated I hear.  My son may not be getting his as we are in CA.  Long way for a short time.
  • Mom2aSailor

I was hoping to connect w/Devon and see if her husband would help keep an eye on the situation. My daughter thinks she knows her hubby. I am hoping maybe an older/married male will help corral these boys in. She said Fri. was much better, so I am hoping it will get better. She was in tears on Thurs. night. :(
  • Devon

I am sure my husband would help her out--personal message me w her name and I will reply w his and also tell him hers so he can find her. So sorry she is dealing w that---it is disturbing--ESP for the guys who are in IS u know?! Grrr
  • Mom2aSailor

My daughters roommate brought a car back with her when she got leave during Memorial Day weekend.  they had just phased up to phase 2.  they've been allowed to use it.
  • mmiles 11/186

My son got all checked in last night and was lucky enough to get to room with 2 guys from his division!!  He wants me to overnight his laptop to him tomorrow! I am so excited for the next part of his adventure to begin!!
  • laurelbc 11/180

Mmiles, I heard your son was spotted in the hallway.  My Seattle boy will be looking him up today I'm sure.  They have an Xbox, so I think they are popular on the weekends.  Welcome to Dam Neck (although I'm a newbie too)
  • Laura

Thank you all for your help. Hopefully my son son won't be a grad and go. We live near Great Lakes so it would be easier for us to bring him home and have him take his laptop then.

Driving to Dam Neck won't be as easy.  His car already has DOD stickers (hubby is Army) but we have never been in the Norfolk area. Will be a new experience!
