nikosmom, my son has not gotten his orders yet. He and 2 others are supposed to be assigned to sub duty, everyone else got their orders a couple of weeks ago
Just got back from Great Lakes. Went to the A school graduation. If anyone has someone who graduated on th 30 th I have some pictures. I was the only one at graduation as they don't make it too big of a deal. It was a nice ceremony. My son is now waiting on his orders for sub school. We had an awesome weekend and the base is great.
do most of the CS's have culinary experence already?? That worries me because my son took foods one and two in school but that is all...and he doesn't cook at home at all...is he going to be lost?? Will he be the only one with little experence?
I love cooking and thats what I want to do, but school is very expensive and thats why I want to join. I already work somewhere where I cook and I enjoy it a lot. I cant wait to start getting everything processed with my recruiter.
Johanna-It's great to hear that your son is doing to well. You must be so proud of his accomplishments. My son cannot wait to leave and get his life going. I know Mystic very well as my husband and I have visited there upon occasion. You are very sweet to be there for Corey. I will keep you updated on his progress. Reality is beginning to set in now that he's leaving in a few weeks and not months. Feeling a bit anxious and hoping he does well. N4M's has really been there for me and I thank all of you for your support. I just hope I will be as comforting future Navy Moms.
Lauren-Sounds like your son is thriving, as well. Congrats! I would love to get back to Hawaii some day. Pearl Harbor is a sombering experience, but I suggest everyone go there for some "perspective". We all have much to be proud of!!
I am so glad to hear that all the new sailors are doing well. Richard is "dry docked" for at least nine months. His ship came home in Sept. and since then, he is preparing the ship for repairs. He has to remove everything that is not bolted down. After that, he will be assigned to a galley on base. He has already told me that he will spend the summer in Hawaii, so I guess his ship will be ready by then.
Good luck on all the A school students and their assignments!
He also spent last summer in Hawaii. His brother isn't happy! He's stuck in New Orleans in the Naval Hospital. He's not assigned to a ship.
Oh, to be sent to Hawaii for the summer! What a horrible life!
Yea it's a hard place to live, but I guess someone has to do it! His home base is San Diego. No wonder he doesn't want to come home to Dallas to visit! lol
Brandon still has 160days.....I am counting every one. And we are going through with him all the same stuff as alot of the other parents. He just does not understand why he can not do what he wants when he wants to do it. I guess this is never going to change. I know with the holidays comeing it will go faster. He is just READY!
Brandonsmom, I remember the holidays before my boys left. I took as many pictures as I could. My younger son who went first has now been in for a little over a year (his PIR was 10-16-09) and when I look at the pictures "before and after" I can see the change! Laurence's hair was midway down his back and now, well...
My CS has been almost a year, and he also has grown!
I agree, your PIR group will be your rock for the eight weeks of boot camp. You will grow together as well as cry with each other. Johanna and I were in the same PIR group for our boys last fall. You can also count on us here. We have all been where you are now. All I can say is: Get ready and put on your seat belt because you are in for the ride of your life!
Lauren, Welcome to the Navy! I have become a pro at changing airline tickets! Some places are very helpful once you say that you need to change the date on the ticket due to last minute change in orders. American Airlines has a special Military rate that can only be bought buy calling them, (not available on-line) Priceline will need official proof and will change it on the spot. Another company< had to pay the difference and waited almost 2 months to be reimbursed.
The good news about being in Hawaii: It's still part of the US and is not an international call. The down size is the time difference. My son was there this past summer. He would call me around midnight my time, but would be about 7PM his time.
Sorry I have been AWOL lately, I never thought going back to school could consume so much of my time.
I agree with Johanna. Go to Nexflix and watch Carrier. It in in ten one hour episodes. It will make you cry, laugh and most of all have a better understanding the real life of living on a ship.
My son's ship is dry-docked and he says he is so bored. He goes to the ship every morning at 5:30 and helps to get things off so the ship can have some much needed repairs. After that, he will be assigned to a base galley until it his ship is ready to be reloaded and then he will be going back to Hawaii for the summer.
Well my boy has about 138 days untill he goes to BC...The days are going fast. He has been working every day the last two weeks. I'm praying that he will keep it up. He tried to call in yesterday but I fussed untill he got up and went. He just has not gotten the hint that being an adult means that you go to work EVERY DAY. He wants to be an adult but is not sure he likes how you have to act as an adult. Praying for the days before us go well and smooth......and fast.
Well his recruiter does not do much to help him. They only require him to call in on mondays and come in sometime during every mth to sign some paper. They have a Depp meeting once a mth but I think he has only been to one or two times. He was just told the other day that he could go to the YMCA for free. They never told him that before. I have called the recruiter several time to get some help with him and the recruiter never has any answers. He always says well call me if you need me. But he never does anything......I'm not real happy with him. It seems like he got B through MEPS and a contract but then has forgotten about him.
Well it doen't really matter he will not do it if I tell him too. He is in good shape not sure about the 2miles. But the one time he did go to a DEP/PT meeting he said he they went through the PT test and he passed everything. so I guess that is good. I know he knows the creed but not sure about the rest. I just wish the recruiter would call him and encurage him. He will not listen to me.
brandonsmom, I was also in the same PIR group as Johanna. It was there that I learned so much. There is also a group for deppers that I felt was helpful.
Just remember, we have all been where you are now and understand what you are going through.
It has been quite here. I'm having a low key week. I'm taking my daughter to Houston to visit NASA. My CS son won't be able to come home for Thanksgiving, but my corpsman son comes home for part of the week. They both will be home for Christmas. Anyone else having a sailor home this week?
My sailor has duty on Thanxgiving so he won't be coming home. His leave in January was denied, but we're flying to San Diego go spend Christmas with him -- even for a couple of days. He's leaving soon for an 8-month deployment so any time we can get with him is a blessing.
Happy Thanksgiving to all! I hope if your sailor is not home, we are able to talk to him/her today. My CS son is off today and tomorrow, but will be on duty over the weekend.
Lauren, my son goes to the ship ever day, but does not cook. From what I understand, they are working at taking everything that is not bolted down out of the ship. While the repairs are being done, he wll be assigned to a land gally. It sounds like the ship will be ready by summer, since he said he will he in Hawaii. I will ask for more details tonight, once he is off duty.
I asked Richard what he was going to be doing now that his ship is dry docked. He said that he has to go every day and "sweep". He said that even though it is being repaired, they are responsible for the ship. He has no idea how long be wil be doing this. I will continue to ask and post.
Well we have 111 more days untill my CS goes to BC. Right now he is staying at a friends house. I have not seen him sence thanksgiveing. Sence he moved out he does not have a car or ins. Not sure why he thinks this is better then being at home?? Oh well. I will pray that he comes home to spend some time with us before March. : (
Ok..I was just over on the Naval Station Great Lakes f/b page and they have pics of the last CS grads out of Great Lakes...that they are moving CS A School to Fort Lee, Virginia. Has anyone else heard about this. My son, CS, is currently at boot camp, Grad & Go, but thinks he's staying at Great Lakes...Need some info/verification here, please...
Is it March yet, I agree with what Lauren said. My CS son was in BC during Thanksgiving and Christmas last year. I sent out a mass email and on FB to send him cards. Other than the ones he got and a few friends from Church, I was about the only one who wrote him. I wrote everyday for both my boys. BC has a strange way of making our kids appreciate us more. My younger son would write about how he cried almost every night the first half. It was the first time he had every been away from his family for more than a week.
Lauren-thank you for the info... he has 5 weeks left in boot camp...just spoke to him -he's Grad & Go but, he's not aware of the VA location...thought he was staying at GL's.
So happy for your son...mine is so looking forward to this rate. I'm sure he will get this info soon, Thanks:)
I have heard it here as well as on Facebook about A School moving. I wonder how things are going. I look forward to posts about it
My son's ship is still dry docked and he was telling me about sand blasting all night. I don't think he will cook until April when his ship goes back out to sea.
Well, according to my SR, he's G&G to Ft. Lee, Virginia for Culinary A School...they have officially moved there from GL's. I'm just going to spend every minute I can with him before he gets on the plane...
lauren- Jan. 21st...soon:) It has been quite stressful, but all my Navy Mom's have gotten me through...don't know what I would have done without all of you!
Here's hoping your son gets 3rd class...so exciting!!
Lauren, good luck with your son's third class test. My son is doing the same. His ship is in dry-dock until April. He hates it!! they have everyone sweeping. He was hoping to be assigned a land galley, but oh well.
Ruth, my son is a CS because he said it was the only thing they had. He says he has a new respect for cooks! Johanna's son was in culinary school when he joined. It is hard work, but rewarding.
