so A school is where my husband will be then I guess, and thats where?
  • Ellen B

Jen-My son phased up to '3' the third week. We went down to VA to celebrate his birthday on March 5th and had him for the weekend. He put in a chit for it the week or so before. We stayed at the Comfort Inn, 1/2 mile from Ft. Lee base.

To date, he graduated March 11th and is still in Ft. Lee waiting for his orders to Groton, CT for sub school. As far as orders for sub assignment/1st duty station...nothing yet.

  • Ellen B

CS A School is at the Army base in Ft. Lee, Virginia. The Navy share their barracks with the Air Force.
  • OMG hes a Sailor (div180)

B should be in Great Lakes now! I guess I will try to stay awake untill he calls, I did fine no tears. I am way to happy for him to cry. I will keep y'all updated. Is any other moms here from NC have a son leave today? B met someone that is also a CS. I forgot what the boys name was.

  • OMG hes a Sailor (div180)

He called last night he sounded normal. I just told him I loved him and would see him soon!
  • aveoamare(Ship02div925)

so true Johanna, I read everything I can about boot camp, the boot "honor courage commitment" was also amazing, it chronicles 88 people going through boot camp, and their RDC's.
  • OMG hes a Sailor (div180)

Hi girls! just checking in. PIR 5/27! memorial day weekend, that is a very cool weekend to graduate!
  • Ellen B

Definitely join your PIR group...that's what got me through the rest of boot camp. You meet some of the most wonderful group of women that you will begin a lifelong friendship with beyond Navy graduation. I adore my "Seasters" and we converse every day. You may also connect with others whose son/spouse is in the same division...another connection to him!
  • navywife21

For those of you who don't know ... The new CS "A-School" is located at Fort Lee (Army base) in Virginia. The Navy and Air Force share a brand new building for thier barracks. The school itself is also brand new and state of the art.
  • Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)

My son is at Ft. Lee now and really likes the base and the school.
  • Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)

I believe it is May 6th. He just started classes this week. He said it is a nice change (especially weather wise) from GL.
  • Ellen B

Their buildings are brand new and their rooms are huge! They also have their own bathrooms. My son said it was in the 80's there today. Since he's on hold, they had yardwork duty in that heat.
  • ltolerNCcoastmom(ship03/Div155)

does anyone know how long A school is? My son now tells me he will be in Va!! That is great for us cause we are about 4 hrs away. And, do we get to see him during A school at all?
  • missionmarcher

Hi yall!! My son is in the same Ship and Div as ltoler and is also coing into CS. I am so proud of him and am so thrilled he has chosen this job. I can't wait for leave time for him so he can show me what he has learned!! I told him I would send some of my favorite recipes with him and maybe he can cook them. I hope they stock lots of butter on board their vessels in teh Navy because that is the most important ingredient in a lot of my dishes. lol

I am so glad ltoler reminded me of this discussion. I have been on N4M for a while but just got on here.

  • ltolerNCcoastmom(ship03/Div155)

and we're glad your here too missionmarcher!!!
  • Ellen B

CS A School is 5 weeks long...
  • Ellen B

Shannon-My son is waiting for sub school as well...He was told it could be quite awhile before he leaves for Groton....been on hold since March 11th...

been on internet looking at a question site on Navy CS. I am SO tired of seeing people put down these folks who are "what they call a glorified COOK" and that they are the low end of the totum poll cause there weren't any other jobs they could get. Help me out with this....my son likes to cook and chose culinary. Yes, he could have retested and done better but he wanted in and this was the only thing available at the time. He waited over a year to get there. If it wasn't for these men and women, they just may "eat" their words!!!!!!!
  • aveoamare(Ship02div925)

You know, I really agree Itoler, unfortunatly my husband didn't want to be a cook, but it was the only job available and he wanted into the navy ASAP.  Before he left he did a lot of googling the position and everyone said it was horrible and it was the lowest job you could have and blah blah blah.  I personally LOVE to cook and am quite jealous he is going to be getting so much training in the field.  I have a feeling my husband is going to love it however.  Where would people be without a cook?  They would be starving out there in the middle of the ocean, that's where!
  • ltolerNCcoastmom(ship03/Div155)

same here. I love to cook too. I hope my son will enjoy it and feel the need to advance in that position. I could learn a thing or two.

Just wish people would watch what they say!!

  • Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)

My son loves to cook also. He took it all through HS and graduated from community college with his degree in Culinary. For those naysayers that state that cooking is the lowest of the low...my nephew cooked for 6 years at the White House-was a CS in the Navy. So great things can happen to our CS's. :)
  • ltolerNCcoastmom(ship03/Div155)

thanks Junebug. Encouraging words are always helpful!
  • navywife21

My husband graduates April 29th as well.
  • ltolerNCcoastmom(ship03/Div155)

ok, here we go. Thank you lauren..I AM proud of my son and I was told by a navy grad from nurse anethesthia school that CR's is the BEST place to be. They can advance faster than any other position in the military. I was just low and wanting some more encouragement! I love the fact that he is doing what he WANTS to do and not stuck in something he will regret later(and he may regret this later but he is happy now). Thank you for the encouraging words!!! I needed them!!
  • ltolerNCcoastmom(ship03/Div155)

I agree. Thank the Lord I have been able to talk to others and keep up with all that is going on!! It's keeping me going
  • ltolerNCcoastmom(ship03/Div155)

Jen. I hear ya! I love to cook but hate to bake. I burn everything and get burnt in the process. Give me real food anyday!!
  • oregonmom

My son originally wanted to be a corpman but he scored 2 pts too low so he chose CS. He started this week and loves it. He has a great group of buddies that came from GL with him, Junebug's son for one, and they are having a great time. When he gets out of the Navy he'll have a trade that he can work at to pay for college to be something else if he wants. Right now he's happy and so are we!!
  • Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)

Jen--glad that he will be on the East Coast! That is great!

Oregonmom--I was actually talking to my son when your son popped in his room the other day. Guess they walked down to the gas station (?) to get some snacks the other night. I love that they are buddies. :)  I agree, they will have the background and training for a great job when they get out.

Finally, when we were at GL for his PIR, the NEX had shirts for each job in the Navy. The CS shirt was great looking.

  • aveoamare(Ship02div925)

    What is a Tiger Cruise?
  • aveoamare(Ship02div925)

Oh that sounds amazing, so it would allow me to really know how my husband was living out there on the sub!  I would definitely  go =)
  • ltolerNCcoastmom(ship03/Div155)

you all encourage me and make me proud that my son chose this profession!
  • OMG hes a Sailor (div180)

hello ladies ..I had to go back 5pages to get to my last post. Y'all have been chatin like crazy! LOL B is starting his 3rd week in Basic. Im sure I said this before but his is 11/180 PIR May 27!! I am praying he was able to write yesterday!! Just a little about him he did take Foods 1 and 2 in HS he was not really thinking about CS when he went to MEPS but sence he is Color blind his options were few. He scored good on his ASVAB. His recuiter told him CS was the best of what he was offered. He is excited about the Navy. He says he wants to stay for 20years, then have his own resterant! We will see I guess.. Please pray for my CS and i will pray for yours! Oh and the pics on the fort lee CS FB page are GREAT!

My CSSR (Culinary Spec Sailor Recruit) has called a few times sounding so great. He is cooking in his 2nd week. Potato salad, pancakes, baked mac and cheese, baked fish, and on and on. He loves it. He's in phase 2 now and doesn't have to check in until 2400 on weekends. This weekend he and some others are going to see civil war sites and go around Richmond. Take heart folks, we have good kids doing good things and serving this wonderful country at the same time. We can't ask for more!

    Welcome Flyrsnut!

oregonmom, I am so glad to hear that all is going well in A school. My son's ship just got out of dry-dock this week. It has been out of the water for repairs for over four months. He was able to spend a week in C school learning the art of cooking fish. Other than that, he has not been cooking. He now has the task of getting everything that was put in storage, back into the galley. He was tired when I talked to him yesterday. After all is back in place, they will then have to make the ship sea worthy. I think that will consist of taking out to sea for a short run and doing some drills. I keep up with his ship on facebook.

  • oregonmom

Thank you ladies for sharing info about your sailors. It sure sounds like a lot of life is being learned by your cooks! Johanna if you could tell us some more about your sailor's deployment and catching pirates, I'd love to hear it!! Margaret, your son will learn so much getting the galley set up again. Please share those stories too. When I have stories I'll be sharing too. Thanks all for being here for the rest of us.
  • Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)

I agree...it is great to hear all these stories about our CS's and where they have gone. Johanna--pirates?  What stories he must have!

Shannon--we're not attending the graduation either. We're hoping he will get a leave after he graduates to come home before his first duty assignment.

  • oregonmom

We won't be at the grad either, although I'd love to see Civil War sites and see our sailor, but alas there is reality. Junebug, I'm sure you'd love to see your son stationed in San Diego like we're hoping. As always though we will accept what the good Lord knows is best. Shannon, I hope your sailor's wait is short.
  • oregonmom

    Great story Johanna. Go Navy!!

Jenn, hope you bf gets some time off. Having him stationed so close is cool too.

  • Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)

    Great story Johanna!!!!

Jen--I believe they do get some time off before reporting. But don't quote me on it because anything can change at a moments notice.

Oregonmom--SD would be great!!! But like you said, wherever the Lord puts him is the place for him.

  • Margaret_ProudTexasMomof2Sailors

Johanna, your son has had an adventure during his short time. My CS went to Hawaii and dry-dock! He did a lot of sweeping and meal deliveries. I think he is planing a trip to Hawaii again or Japan. The Navy hasn't made up it's mind yet. lol. He hopes it's Hawaii. After he got married last August, he had to go back to San Diago the next day. If he goes to Hawaii, he wants to fly his wife out so they can have somewhat of a honeymoon.
As for leave after A school, both of my boys were home for two weeks. If they volunteer at the recruiting office while at home, they won't have to use all their leave time. I would tell your sailor to look into it. Good luck. I loved having my boys back home after A school!
  • Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)

Shannon--Congrats on your son graduating CS school!!!!  Hooyah!!!!
  • oregonmom

Congrats Shannon!! Let us know where he ends up. Sailors graduating May 6th don't have their orders yet. Chris wants San Diego, I would like Washington too. Saves money on travel. Chris is still very happy with his choice.
    Hooyah for Shannon's sailor!
  • Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)

Congrats Shannon!!!  Glad he is off to sub school right away and not stuck waiting. Can't wait to hear my son's orders--he graduates May 6th...hoping we hear something soon!
  • missionmarcher

Congrats Shannon!!! My SR graduates from bc next Friday 4/29 and then heads to CS school!!

    Hi Junebug!! How's things going??

  • oregonmom

Junebug, no word today either!! Again, we're on a roller coaster. I'd love to know east or west coast. I'm praying for west, please, please!!
  • Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)

Congrats to all our upcoming SR's graduations (Flyersnut & Missionmarcher).....PIR is so incredible.

Oregonmom--I feel like we are on a roller coaster also. I'm hoping for west coast also!!!!
