Navymom2014.....If your child's goal is to attend the Academy, Any chance to attend any of the programs that are offered would be a wise move. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have regarding the academy.
@Navymom2014-my daughter was a STEM counselor between her junior and senior years at the Academy. She loved the experience! Attendees will get a chance to use some great technology; it is different from summer seminar in that STEM does not try to replicate the midshipman experience. It is more targeted at sparking an interest in math and science so kids will be better prepared if they decide to pursue an appointment to a service academy. She also attended summer seminar while in high school and had a great time.
My son also went to Summer Seminar during the summer between junior and senior years of high school. That experience had a great deal to do with his going to the Academy. He met the track coaches there who ended up recruiting him, he got a good idea of what the Academy is like, and as soon as he got home local Blue and Gold officers got in touch with him and encouraged him to complete his application. I, too, would be happy to answer questions about the Academy.
PACFLEET has changed the HSC -15 public Navy site. Http://www.hsc15.navy.mil. Now with a nod to the N4M rules, I would to mention that the new XO is a really sharp guy. According to his bio he has worked very hard. That's all. :-)
Marlowe-White (http://www.militarysabers.com/navy-officer-sword.html) would be one online source. I had access to a local Navy base through a friend at work and was able to order through the uniform shop but if I had to order online M-W would be my choice.
We ordered our son's from Marlow and White, they had a 'Premium Package' that included the belt and accessories. It is a beautiful sword. He got a display case for it for Christmas.
If you know how tall he is you have it made! 5'8'' to 5'9" will be 29", then every two inches add an inch for the sword length. So by the time you ge to 6' your at 31"

JJ is correct. Marlow and White have an FAQ on sizing. http://www.militarysabers.com/military-sword-information/m-measurin... it's pretty simple. If you have any other questions you can call them. They were really nice in 1997, I'm sure they still are. LOL. I asked them all the questions and order through the Exchange. Not much internet ordering back in the dark ages.
Looks like my LO will be based in Coronado and needs to start looking for a place to live. Does anyone have any info on where to look for affordable, nice rentals in San Diego? Real Estate or rental agents?? Neighborhoods or communities to definitely look at, or to avoid??? Help!!
Hi everyone - this coming weekend my son will be commissioned one day, and graduate from medical school the next. Wow - how did this happen?! :) Any great ideas of gifts? (I got him a great wooden box for his graduation from ODS some time ago.)
Hey Rosemarie, we lived in Coronado for 3 years, feel free to PM me about housing in the area, good places to live, etc....as far as cities go, there are really very few bad areas in San Diego! We loved living there!
Congrats Jn/Jf Mom! Wear your NAVY MOM t-shirt proudly. You could even add X2 with a marker! Are they doing the graduation/commissioning ceremony on Saturday now? It was always on Friday a few years ago. Have a great time in Newport. Anchors Aweigh!
Jn/Jf Mom: Sorry, I just assumed your son was in OCS because that's what my son did, but I know they can be commissioned from NROTC and also from the Naval Academy, so I was just thinking of my own experience. You'll have a great weekend with a graduation AND a commissioning!!!!
Hi Everyone! just a follow up to my sword question - it became a non-issue because he received a sword during an awards ceremony! I got to go to the Spring award ceremony and saw it. Good thing I decided to wait until after my trip there to order one! Got other ideas from him for a commissioning gift though.... June will be here soon!
I am not on here much these days and I am sorry for that. It seems that everyone has wonderful news of their sons and daughters! It is so exciting. I, too, have awesome news. We just returned for Colorado Springs. Our son was promoted to Captain! We are so proud of him, you can see our teeth sparkling from a mile away since our smiles are so big! It has been a long time coming. I can still remember when he was commissioned back in 1992. He looked so handsome in his dress whites. Now, it was my pleasure to pin those Eagles on his cover while his daughter put them on his shirt collar. What an awesome day! Can moms (and dads, too) "bust" with so much pride???!!!! LOL
JJ, Congratulations on your son's promotion to Captain! Our son just recd his LT JG promotion and we couldn't be more proud! All of our best wishes and thanks for his 22 years of service to our country!
Thank you, one and all. Every promotion is as exciting as that very first commissioning! We are so proud of each and every new officer. Thank you for your service to our Country.
Moms: Please pray for the two pilots who crashed in the last two days. For those of you who may not know, a Marine Harrier jet crashed into a house in So. Cal. The pilot ejected, and thankfully no one was hurt in the house. Wed night, a Navy Hornet jet was trying to land on the carrier USS Carl Vinson off the coast of CA, and crashed into the ocean. That pilot was also able to eject. No name yet, but they said he was stationed at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach. This hits close to home, because my son is currently aboard the Vinson! He is an aviation intelligence officer and works closely with the pilots, but this plane was not from his squadron. I'm sure he's upset about it, but has not replied to my email yet. I can't imagine how shook up the Moms of these two pilots are, but hopefully they will make complete recoveries with the help of our prayers.
Thanks for the info. I heard about the CA Marine jet but not the Carl Vinson. So glad that both pilots survived and no one was hurt on the ground. Prayers for their families.
Navy Times is reporting a crash at Whiting Field. Helo from a training squadron with trainee and instructor hit the trees. Minor injuries. Three in 24 hours...
3? Wow! Not a good day for Naval aviation. Got an email from my son on the Vinson. He said the rescue helo crew did an outstanding job recovering the Hornet pilot from the water in the dark. He said the pilot is injured but will be OK. I guess it is NOT a pleasant experience to eject from a jet, so hopefully the Harrier pilot will be OK too. These "kids" are so brave to do what they do!!!
The helos are up constantly in the pattern around the ship during ops. They train for this and fortunately very seldom put their hours of training into a real deal rescue. They executed perfectly and everyone gets to come home. My son is on the Vinson as well.
Chris emailed me today to let me know he had been promoted to Lieutenant earlier this month! He had email issues for a couple of weeks and I kept waiting to hear something because I knew it was coming. Unfortunately, it was just a 2 min ceremony during the work day (he's on a small PC in Bahrain) and no pictures were taken. I was so hoping to have a picture in his dress whites...wishful thinking! LOL Sure glad I at least have the commissioning pic! I'm soooo very proud of him. He's been in Bahrain since last June and was supposed to come home this Aug but the Lt JG who is to replace him isn't qualified yet and has to take more classes so Chris will be there until the end of Nov and may not be home to OH until Dec :( Such is life in the Navy!
Congrats, Chris'sMom! It seems these promotion ceremonies just happen informally, when we Moms would love to be there and/or have pics of the occasion. My son will be deployed on a carrier in Sept when (hopefully) his first promotion to LT JG happens. His is UNDER ORDERS to have somebody take pics and email them to Mom. Lets see how much authority I have on an aircraft carrier! Haha
Thanks Anna and M's mom! I think the ceremonies are better on the larger ship. Chris was on a destroyer when he was promoted to LT JG and the ship's photographer took pics. The Ramage sent pics out to the ombudsman regularly which she would forward but on the Thunderbolt with only 25 or so sailers there is no photographer and there are very few pics of anything on her FB page. I hope you do get pics. Even on the Ramage though he was just in his work clothes when he got promoted.
Hi everyone, I was wondering if there are any mom's out there that have sons or daughters in the Nuke program. My son is currently at Power school, about 2 weeks in, he did go to three weeks of preschool. I am a member of the Nuke group but it seems mostly the mom's have enlisted sons or daughters. My son graduated from OCS in March, so he is just starting out and I wanted to know if there are others out there with info about Power School. If there is another group out there better suited please let me know.
My son is going to be stationed in Yokosuka, Japan in July. He has been stationed at Parris Island for the past year and a half. Does anyone have a son/daughter in Japan? Thanks.
