Kyle'sMom: Welcome!  Read back through the posts here on Moms Of Officers for anything pertinent to OCS.  We have had several OCS moms join recently. Also, join the group "OCS Graduate Moms" here on N4M's if you haven't already, and read back through the posts there as far back as you can, and we have probably already answered many of your questions.  Tell your son to work out hard and get himself in excellent shape before reporting so he will pass that first physical fitness assessment!  He MUST memorize all that Navy knowledge his recruiter should have given him BEFORE he reports!  He should also have memorized your phone # and email address before he leaves.  His personal phone will be taken and stored as soon as he arrives, and his first short phone call home on day 1 or 2 will be from a public pay phone, so he must have pre-paid phone card with him and know the #.  They will not be able to email until about week 4, and then only from a closed server, so they must type in any email addresses from memory.

Twostateshome:  Welcome!  It is important that nobody send anything but letters in plain white envelopes to the candidates before they become Candios at week ten, or it will be confiscated as contraband and the candidate will be punished, even if they did not ask for it to be sent.  Someone's auntie in my son's class sent cookies at week 3 and the poor guy had to do 800 pushups!!!!!  Make sure everyone you give your son's mailing address to knows this!  At the end of week nine the officer candidates officially become Candidate Officers (Candios) and they will be running the regiment for the final three weeks, so they get their phones back and can receive goodies from home.  Most folks use large-size "flat rate" mailing boxes form the Post Office. They make into a box about 12"x12"x6" and you can stuff as much into it as will fit, and it still costs only about $16 to mail it.  This is way cheaper than a comparable-sized box by UPS.  Tradition is to decorate the inside of the box in a Navy theme with paper, fabric, stickers, etc.  My son's class two years ago could NOT receive alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or anything like a weapon, (squirt guns) but all else was OK.   I sent my son homemade cookies, and he requested his personal laptop computer which he was not allowed to have until then.   They can receive multiple boxes, but my son said since they only had three weeks to go, they couldn't eat and even share all they were sent, so lots of it gets tossed out if your family goes overboard.

Welcome! This site is a big help as are the friends and family sites on Facebook. Search for one with your sons class number. Also request membership to the class prior so you'll have a perspective for a few weeks prior to events your son will go through.

My son is in week 7. Sometimes it seems time is going by slowly; other times it feels like it's going by quickly. Very exciting & we can't wait for graduation!

Any ideas for graduation gifts from moms of officers? I've seen suggestions for swords, mini tablets and garment bags. Want to make sure it's something special. Thx!
  • Anna

    Gatormom,

Does your son already own a GPS?  If not, that would be useful as they travel!!!

One of the comments our daughter made regarding her time at OCS, was stealing a glance at the Newport Bridge while she was out on the field doing PT!!!  So my husband and I took many pictures of the bridge while we were there for her graduation, and my hubby drew her a picture of the bridge in the pre-dawn (the time when she would be out there) and had it framed.  She loved it!!!!!

  • M's mom

RE: OCS graduation gifts. We did get our son a large durable travel garment bag that we took to his graduation so he could put his uniforms in it to fly home.  He still uses it.  The gift he liked most was called an "Ensign box" or "Commissioning box" which looks like a woman's wooden jewelry box, which contains two layers of felt-lined little compartments in which to store all his full-sized medals (they usually only wear the ribbons) and his nametags, insignias, etc. while his uniforms are at the cleaners.  I had the lid engraved with his name, United States Navy, and his OCS class number and commissioning date. It was quite handsome in oak.  My son says he puts all his pins in it whenever he "strips" a uniform for the laundry.  I ordered it online but can't remember the site name.  Just Google "Ensign box" and see what pops up.                                 My son told us not to bother with a sword, because it would just hang on the wall collecting dust unless he used it for a military wedding, etc. but others may like to have a sword.

  • M's mom

Anna,  Yes, the Newport Bridge is beautiful.  My son's First Salute ceremony was done on the waterfront, and the pictures have the bridge in the background.  My son said he could see the bridge out of his barracks window, and it was all lit up at night.  He took several pictures of it when he was allowed to have his camera.  I know all OCS grads remember seeing that bridge from the PT fields!  I'm sure your daughter cherishes the drawing of it.

  • Kyle'sMom

Thank you Mom's for all your comments/input.  Looks like I have a lot of reading to do.  Before I know it he will be in Rhode Island.  Look forward to keeping in touch with you all.

  • M's mom

ViperGirl:  It sounds like your son had a different experience in the Marines OCS vs. the Navy. The Navy OCS is 12 weeks, not 6, and all the candidates have already graduated from college.  The graduation ceremony from OCS  is also their commissioning, so it is a big deal.  There are other programs at Newport like ODS (Officer Development School) for professionals like doctors, lawyers, etc. which are not as long and not as intense as OCS which is for "line" officers.

  • Gatormom

Thanks to all for some great ideas for graduation. My husband is quite the woodworker so an ensign box may be a great idea. GPS is also a really good one. Thanks!
  • Rosemarie

    Hi All,
My LO is being deployed shortly... First time. Of course, I am very nervous. Any tips for communication with him while on ship and at port?
  • LindaB

    Hi Rosemarie,
My son is in his second deployment. The first was on the Mesa Verde, an amphib. It lasted almost 11 months, and they did not make many port calls. That was rough.
This time he's on a destroyer, and they've had more port calls.
Both times, I paid a few dollars a month to activate a temporary number with a Norfolk area code on an old cell phone. The phone on the ship had a Norfolk area code, so when he had a chance to call from the ship phone, he could call free on the cell phone with that area code. We don't live in the Norfolk area, but Verizon was very cooperative when I explained what I was doing.
This time, my son has a limited international calling plan on his cell phone so he can us it when he's in port. He can text and call but doesn't send data - no emails or photos, etc.
He often calls when he's on shore patrol at a mall.
He emails fairly often, but there are times when he's either too busy or the Internet is down.
They did have a spell a while ago when they went into "River City" for a few days because of security, and no one let us know at the time. When I go several days without hearing from him, I just figure he's either busy or the Internet is down or they have gone "dark." I tell myself that if anything bad happens, the Navy will let me know.
I try to send an email every day whether I've heard from him or not.
He Skypes some with his girlfriend, but for some reason he seems to find it kind of cumbersome and doesn't use it a lot.
I send packages every couple of weeks. This time, the thing he wants most is coffee. I always throw in instant noodle meals, candy, jerky, pistachios, sunflower seeds, etc., and try to include a book or magazine or two, maybe a DVD.
We did meet him in Italy for a scheduled port call on the last deployment, and that was great, but I don't think anything like that is going to happen this time. Their schedule is subject to change according to what's going on in the world and in the Navy.
  • Gatormom

Yikes, is that what happens on subs, no communication?? Our son graduates OCS end of Aug & will likely head to Charleston in January. I guess it's a yr of power school and then 3 yrs assigned to a sub. Is it typical that there is little contact while assigned to a sub? I was hoping it was some at sea, some in their assigned port, but really have no idea.
  • Anna

    Gatormom,

I had a son-in-law on a sub and there is little communication.  And his sub never went to a port.  While deployed the ombudsman would contact all the family members to tell them when a mid-deployment mail drop was going to be and any letters, boxes you wanted to send needed to be dropped off by a certain date and then all the mail would be dropped off to the sub.  Only occasional emails was the only thing we got.

  • Gatormom

Thanks Lisbeth. Had no idea how it worked. Certainly going to take some getting used to. We live in Gainesville Fl, which is where UF is, that he attended, so this will be our first experience with him being gone. Sounds like the boomer will give him more time off. What does the one crew that's not on the sub do for the 3 mos the other sub is out?
  • Gatormom

Thanks Anna for your response, too. I really appreciate it. It will all be great for his career, but some tough years.
  • marzidoatz

Do I understand this right?  I look up the ship information and then send a message to the email address listed for the ombudsman to request updates?  Or does my daughter provide the information to the ombudsman?  Thanks in advance - Mary

  • M's mom

marzidoatz,  My son will be leaving on his first long cruise soon also, so I also wonder how we get on the ship's ombudsman's list.  My son says he doesn't know yet.  How about it cruise veteran Moms?    Thanks!

  • Gatormom

Thanks Lisbeth! So much change ahead. Candio week is next week--finally! Hopefully, when we get to talk to our son, he'll be able to answer some of our many questions.
  • marzidoatz

I went to this website: https://ombudsmanregistry.org/?m=contactombudsman and sent a message.  In a short time, I was contacted by the ombudsman for the ship my daughter is assigned to.  She explained that my daughter will be given an email address connected to the ship and can provide the contact information to the ombudsman.  The gal was very nice and gave me both her work phone number and personal phone number.

  • Gatormom

Candio box was a huge success! Got a 45 minute call from our son last. Can't wait for graduation, just 3 short weeks away!
  • Paymaster

M's ....you may want to delete your message as we never put actual dates of departures on our post. From an old hand.
  • M's mom

Paymaster:  Sorry.  I  didn't write the ship's name, so I thought it was acceptably vague.  Some here have asked if anyone has a LO on a certain ship.  I assume that's OK to ask about a particular ship after it's out to sea?

  • Paymaster

M's mom....We all live and learn.  I feel that our children are most valuble, so I never like to endanger them.  After the Navy has done their news release on shipe out is a safe time to mention them here.

  • freckles1218

Hi all! I am new here - my son just got sworn in last Thursday. He will graduate college in May and has OCS and Power school in his future. He can't wait! We are excited for him but this is all new to us. Not sure how any of it works. We live in Upstate NY so Rhode Island is not too far and neither is Ballston Spa. Maybe he will attend there. Feel free to pass along any tips!

  • M's mom

Welcome, freckles1218.  We have had several new OCS moms join recently, so read back through the last several months of posts here and we may have already answered many of your questions. Also join the group here on N4M's called "OCS Graduate Moms" and read as much as you can of those postings, including the "Discussion Forum" topics listed above the comment walls in both groups.  We have answered many questions recently for new Navy Moms, so just ask if you can't find an answer!

  • BunkerQB

freckles, in the OCS Graduate Moms group, there is a OCS Guide (or Guideline). Be sure you read that. Your son has some time before he goes to OCS. Make sure he starts running NOW and keep running. The better shape he is in, the better he'll do. Teach him to iron and shine his shoes (my son's two most dread obstacles). He doesn't swim well, time to get him lessons and make him swim everyday.

  • BunkerQB

Here is the link to the PDF file. Click on it and save it to your hard disk. Some of the information may be out of date (eg. OCS is in Newport only no longer session in Pensacola).

  • freckles1218

Thanks for the link - I will check it out. He is a recruited runner at his division 1 college so running is the easiest thing  he will do. He has been working on his push ups and sit-ups so he can be above the average mark. He intends to swim at least once a week to get ready but thinks the swimming is not that much? He thought maybe 50 yards or so? I will teach him to iron next week - he never had to do that. And we'll shine Dad's shoes for practice! I wouldn't have thought of those things. This is great to have tips from other moms!

  • Gatormom

My LO graduates OCS end of month. Just got his orders for power school in Charleston for November. Do they get leave for Thanksgiving & Xmas? Do they have to live on base or is it an option? Sounds like it's a very challenging school.
  • Anna

    freckles,

There is a guide to OCS that you should be able to find a link from the Naval Officer Command facebook page.  He should read up on that as there are things he has to have memorized very quickly upon arrival at OCS.  The more he can learn before hand the better off he will be.  There is also terminology he needs to know, and info on how to respond when asked a question.  These are all things my daughter and her friends studied up on and they were all glad they did!!!!

  • LindaB

My son is deployed on a ship out of Norfolk and has orders to Annapolis, Md., when he returns. He is offering his house in Currituck County, NC, for rent and would love to rent it to Navy officers. It would be good for a couple of junior officers to share, or for a married couple. It's commuting distance to Norfolk Naval Station. It's on the water with two boat slips and in a quiet, safe neighborhood. Contact me for a link with photos.

Moms:  My son is currently aboard the USS Carl Vinson, and two of their jets collided and crashed this morning.  They retrieved one pilot, but the other is still missing.  Please keep all the sailors on the Vinson, especially these two pilots and their families, in your thoughts and prayers.

  • Helomom

M's mom, my son is aboard the Vinson too. It's a devastating day for us all.
  • Gatormom

Oh no, I had not heard. Prayers tonight for all your loved ones, the pilots and their families.
  • Paymaster

Waiting for news of the Vinson. DS best friend is a f18 pilot on board. This is one of those no news is good news times. Waiting with baited breath.
  • ChrisyDVM(Chris'sMom)

I hate so bad to hear this and will be praying for the sailors and their families. Please keep us updated.

  • M's mom

CNN has just reported that the Navy has called off the search for the missing pilot after 36 hrs.  My heart breaks for his family.  How awful that he may never be found.   Praying that all the rest of the Vinson crew will return home safely.

  • ChrisyDVM(Chris'sMom)

My heart breaks for this sailor, his family and his shipmates. Praying that somehow that he will still be found.

Is there anyone here who has an Officer starting Nuclear power school soon? my son just arrived on GC ready for round 2 of power school- he went through as enlisted 4 years ago! We had a nice group of moms for that journey - hoping to connect with a group for this Journey!
  • Gatormom

Carol, our son starts on 11/14. When does your son start?
  • Carol Aileen

gatormom I think 9/25 - but will find out more this week. Is your son in GC already?
  • NOAM

My hubby passed on this request for help.

    ***************************

Hello everyone! This is Co-Admin Jim from NavyDads.com. I would like to share a message with you from another Navy Dad. I'm sure after you read this, you'll understand how important this is.
"Our family just moved into our new home, after living in a hotel for two months. Everything came out of storage safely, except for one box that the movers effectively compacted into a flapjack with their lift-gate. That box had our sons graduation video in it, and it was completely destroyed. We didn't have a backup. The company that makes and sells the videos keeps the files for only about two months, so they couldn't help us. That graduation was the proudest moment my wife and I could remember (he is now an MA stationed near Florida) and the loss of this disk was heartbreaking. He was in Division 090, and graduated on February 8th of 2013. Is there anyone that might have that that DVD and would be willing to either send us a copy or send the disk to me so I can make a copy and send it back to you? I can cover all shipping costs of course, but I need a copy of that video disk! If you can help, please contact me at frogprinting@msn.com."
    This is from Allen Elliot.
Thank you for your time and if you can help, that would be great!
    Jim

Our son starts power school on Oct. 22. He is not at GC yet.

  • Carol Aileen

Hi Lynn!    My son reported in at GC today,  I have not heard for sure when he starts power school yet.   He is getting settled into his apartment, waiting for the movers to drop off his stuff.

  • Gatormom

Carol, is GC in Charleston? He returned home until November & has put in for 30 days leave. Not sure what the status of is of that request. He's working in our local recruiting office now. Thinking he'll want to live off base in Charleston so will reach out for suggestions as the time approaches. Sounds like they'll be about 6 weeks apart. Quite a few from his OCS class report with him.
  • Lynn Baker

Gatormom, yes GC stands for Goose Creek which is technically the address for power school. Your son graduated with mine. Austin is renting a home with others from their class. He is also working at a recruiting office but 3 hours away from home. Carol, keep us informed on GC since our LO's don't report just yet.

  • Gatormom

Lynn, will Austin start 11/14 as well? Our son mentioned many from his class are starting with him in November.
  • Lynn Baker

Gatormom, Austin has to report on 10/22. Not sure what that means but he will be moving to GC on 10/11 to settle into the house they have rented.

  • Carol Aileen

Lynn and Gatormom - I will keep you updated - this is Aaron's second time around so he is at least familiar with the area and has an idea of what to expect.   I highly recommend going to Power school graduation if you can,  it is well worth the trip.   My son has already told us that he is flying us down for his - I can't wait to go back!!

  • Kabar

Wondering if anyone can make a referral or offer advice...

My DS is renting a house in Virginia Beach with 2 other pilots. The lease on the house is through a rental agency and ends in June. There is a military clause that breaks the lease in case of deployment.

The situation,,,One of his roommates is getting deployed next month. Another in February and DS in April. They thought the lease would be broken with this first deployment, however the leasing agency says not true. They want to hold DS and the one roommate responsible until the second deployment and then my son alone until his.

Has anyone run into this before? Can anyone make a referral for help releasing them all from the lease? Two cannot afford the place, let alone one. Thank you.
