hi I hope everyone is doing well. We are doing fine, My seabee was home recently, it was so great to see him. I hadn't seen him since last Nov when he came home for my mom's funeral. Now he is going to a new assignment. So I won't be visiting here very often except to touch base and say hi. I wish everyone a happy life and good wishes for their NAvy person. I will stop in and say hi from time to time.
Hi ladies my name is Vonecia and my husband just finished bootcamp and arrived in mississippi for A school. His parents didnt want to take me to the airport in chicago to give him his goodie bag or his phone. he hasnt had a chance to call yet. Can someone message me the address to his A school if possible because i really want him to have his phone
Vonecia, he should be able to call you from a payphone or something. The address is going to depend on where he is. If he is in Gulfport, there are several buildings he could be in. If he is Meridian, I have no idea what the A school is like up there. Unfortunately, he is really the only one who can provide you with that information. Give him some time and once he is settled I'm sure he will give you a call.
Venocia, My son and I found the easiest way for him to get stuff I sent was for me to send it US mail to the closest post office down there. He would just go there and pick it up rather than find the proper base address and hope it gets to him through that system. Of course, that's dependent upon him being able to have or get a ride and leave base. My son is stationed down there, so it's not an issue for him. Hope that helps.
KTSSONG, I recently married my seabee in California and we did not need a chit. We got married on August 20, it took a week to get the license, filled out all of the paperwork around august 30 and he started getting bah on his september 15th check. I am currently in Louisiana because he is about to be deployed, so I had to mail him my drivers license, birth certificate and social security card, it took him one day to put all of my info into deers and he mailed me a signed paper authorizing me for an spouse ID. I just went to the naval base in New Orleans and got my id with no problems. hope that helps :)
Thanks Denise! He just "heard" that he might get sent home...so we are waiting...just wanted to see if there was a "norm" to go by. LOL "norm"...will stand by for info!
Yeah as much as he would love to see us...he doesn't want to spend the money if he doesn't have too (didn't want to hurt our feelings - I COMPLETELY understand though!), plus ugh, can you imagine the airports! What fun is that?
I wish I could go out there. He has been gone since the end of March. It was more than time for him to be on his own so I haven't been "missing" him (you know what I mean? don't take it the wrong way ladies!) but now that we are heading iinto holiday time (and I am soooooooo friggin' hormonal - yay!) I hate the thought of him having Thanksgiving alone...or maybe it's more us without him. Quite a few years ago my husband got tired of me slaving away in the kitchen all day and being tired for dinner...so we started a tradition of going to our favorite Korean BBQ and then just hangin out together. Won't be the same.
Dang, I'm getting all goofy...that's just life, right!?
Hi everyone.. just stopped in to say hi and to tell you that soon my seabee will be using his "electrifying " personality to bring in new recruits. He may be into recruiting now, but he will always be a seabee... Other than that I am happy to have him on my side of the Mississippi.. I am in New York
Hello Ladies...I am a new seabee mom my son's PIR was 10/7 what a wonderful day. Now he is in Port Hueneme. After hisfirst day he said he thinks the last 8 weeks were his vacation. The work is about to begin. I am glad to find your group and happy to have other seabee moms to talk to . thanks
LisaAnn: Welcome to the club. My son is the company commander there until he graduates A school on Nov. 4th. Devin said that they have gradually gotten more and more strict since he started there on July 23rd. He will get use to it...they have PT Monday, Wednesday and a heavy early morning PT on Friday where they get up at 3am. The first couple weeks he will be adjusting to the base and doing duty but he'll get use to it. Tell him to try to Phase up as soon as he can...with each phase they get more priviledges. The thing they are really getting more strict about is room inspections....has to be perfect! We live 55 miles from base so Devin has gotten to come home most weekends for those that can't do that they do seem to have some nice MWR trips and activities for the guys/girls. You will find that communication will be much better now that he is out of BC. They are allowed cell phones, ipods and computers, more free time but they do have to learn the rules and go to class and study. Sometimes a bit stressful but they all seem to be doing well! I don't get to drive all over the base but what I have seen is really nice. Movie theatre, bowling alley, cnet, hugh Nex, gas station, Commissary, some fast food places inside the NEX (soon adding a Subway) and Gas Station. A new Seabees museum. Navy Lodge on base. I hope that helps ease your mind if you have any questions please feel free to message me. I hope your son will enjoy his time in California. I am amazed that some of the guys are complaining about it being cold. They are right on the ocean and it is a damp cold they get. But guys from WI, PA, CO are complaining? At least they won't have snow. LOL
Thanks for the welcome,my son is living in a room by himself he said that no one has lived there in a while and had to do a lot of cleaning the walls and such all by himself poor baby:) he said he had and great view of the mountains and that if does get cold at night. We live in SC and we are alittle wimpy when it comes to the cold even though we have lived in the north. I sent his electronics today he should get them by the middle of next week. And subway is his favorite. Thanks for the info I will be in touch.
Lol yes it is cold in port hueneme! I'm from Louisiana and its definately hard to adjust to. There's a wind from the ocean that never for a away and zero humidity. I hate it :(
LOL...San Fernando Valley California....103 today...I want our Fall weather to come. But weather at Port Hueneme is different...damper and cooler, and the ocean breeze does make it feel colder. LisaAnn, I think they are in the middle of clearing one barracks so that it can be remodeled in November, so they are putting the "newbies" in a different barracks. Your son still may get a roomie when the next group comes in. New people come in almost every week.
sjtina - Hi! Yes...well he went in as an IT...failed out of the rating. He tried real hard. He was thankful that he was retained and allowed to choose a new rating. He originally wanted SW when he enlisted...but you know how MEPS goes! Hey, he is in the Seabee community!
He's been there a month now and so far so good. He's been appointed Safety PO. Passing his tests really well, just took the PFA and did better than he did at BC on times and such. He called home tonight and told me he failed it AND the test he had today...the stinker....had a bad day and hearing that started to make it worse! Then he tells me he's fooling around...in the end I laughed so it was a good thing! Praying it continues well for him.
Oh ladies, you would hate Michigan then. 80's one day and now three days later fighting to reach 60. Sorry to be away so long. I enjoyed my son's visit with my future dil. After two weeks of them being gone, they call to tell me I am going to be a grandma. So the wedding is back on for Dec 2011 instead of 2012. Ugh
DENISE: Do you think the depression is due to having to change command or his upcoming surgery? Is this surgery for his leg? Long recovery involved? I will continue to keep both Michael and Jackie in my prayers.
Does anyone know: if my son get BAH, will it continue when he deploys if his wife lives with her parents? They are trying to get this all taken care of in the next two months.
Jaz04 what kind of deployment? Just a 8 or 9 month deployment, yes he will get it. My seabee gets deployed next month and I'm going to be staying in Louisiana. We will get the bah for port hueneme bc it goes by his home port and not where I live. But if he is getting deployed for a couple years I'm not sure about that, since she should go with him...
seabeewife, it is short deploy, he is in batt 7. Where abouts in LA? She is from Bush (around the Covington area). Denise, they are talking to her parents tonight about a quick civil ceremony so that he can get all the paper work taken care of, but then having a church wedding in December. I guess a group of them has a class today about getting everything in order before they leave. I reminded him that he will have to change the names on his POA that he already has because she will be next of kin.
Jaz I am Franklinton, la!! About 45 mins from bush! And that's what we did, just had a quick wedding, our big wedding date is in August because he will be gone until then. Is your son in Port Hueneme?
no seabeewife, he is in Gulfport. How long will you be in LA then? Yep civil ceremony will probably be next weekend. Thank goodness because I hear there is a lot of paperwork to take care of. My son took the time to talk to the insurance yesterday. Good to know the pregnancy will be covered.
Good Morning, not sure if this is another group I should be in for support, but I will give you some background information and than together we can decided if I need to be here. My daughter is at A school right now, she is going to be a heavy equipment operator. I don't understand what happens next after A school. I haven't been able to see her since she left in March and due to her not graduating with her class because of injuries in her legs, and hip we didn't get to go to Great Lakes for the graduation. Some people say you get to visit them in A school, some said you do not. Some said they get to come home for a few days after A school, some say they do not. I miss her terribly for many reasons but the most is my health isn't good and just in the last 18months we have become very close again. So when she decided to join the Navy Branch I was very suprise. As a mother you usually have mixed emotions, although I am very proud of her to enter in this journey of life, I am also very scared because of what is happening in the world today. I know in my heart she will succeed in what ever comes her way but that doesn't stop me from wishing her to come home forever.
MamaBear: Which base is she doing A school? That might help narrow down what is done from that base and then someone who has been there with their loved one might be able to give you a good answer.
MamaBear: my son had A-school at FLW, too. and then combat training in Gulfport and now he is stationed in Gulfport. He is also an EO. I was going to drive down for his A school graduation, but then the weather was pretty bad during January (I'm from WI). He was able to come home for Christmas which was about a month before his A school graduation. In A school they get different privileges at each phase, like Denise said....like being able to be off base. Unfortunately the other name for FLW is Fort Lost in the Woods--haha, nothing much to do in the middle of nowhere and the base is huge. The good thing is one of the phases was that they are able to have phones/computers, and communication seemed to be better. Another of the phases, if I remember, is they could wear civilian clothes. LOL-it seemed to be a big deal for my son.
Oh goodness wearing there own civilian clothes is such a great thing to them!!! Not to have to be in uniform all the time. Usually phasing up allows them to go off base either for a day or higher phases they get weekend leave and can sometimes drive so that they can actually go somewhere. Our base allows a 300 mile radius so they can go see a lot of California if they rent a car or have their own. It all depends on the base rules and your Sailor will be know those rules within the first week
well either she miss that information or she has forgot it already because she doesn't seem to be able to tell me if I can visit her before graduation or if she gets to come home after graduation for a few days, or how she is transport to her next desination. She is wearing civilian clothes I know and has been able to go off base for activities. Also she is having trouble keeping her boots shine to their liking any ideas would be welcome the officers have gave her a couple which she has tried but the next officer doesn't like that shine either. She said something that she thinks her boots might be made from something else than most people there. Just wondering if anyone else has had that problem
There is something the guys do with a lighter....heating up the stuff they use to shine there boots or heating the boot after the wax is on....maybe someone at her A school can tell her because I am not clear on how it is done. Tell her to look for the Sailor with the best shine on their boots and ask them for help!
I just talked to my husband about the lighter thing Terry, and Mama Bear, as I remember him doing something like that.
Two ways for that: You can rub the polish in and heat the boot (not recommended if you don't know what you are doing you'll ruin them; hubby doesn't do that anymore) and the other is to heat the top layer of the polish with the lighter. This liquefies it a bit. Again, it's better to learn it from someone who knows how. You could separate the oil from the wax which won't work.
Most boots do not have a shine on them when they are brand new...some are harder to get a shine on...my husband said his Danners were really hard to do, but he did eventually get a shine. Many coats with LOTS of elbow grease. I asked him how many coats to get that great shine and he said eight! Might be a bit easier with different boots.
The reason a polish with wax and oil is put on is that you are filling the pores of the leather. The base coat is important and you won't even get that great of a shine with that.
They would heat the top layer of polish, get a cotton t-shirt, and water. You wrap the t-shirt around your finger, dab in the water, get some polish and start rubbing in small circles. Rub and rub and rub. Finish up with the brush and cloth rubbing it in, do the other boot and start over. When they stopped heating up the wax first, what they did instead was rub a layer in and then set them in the sun, rub a layer in back in the sun. Same finishing process. The coats don't hurt them because you are filling the pores. The heat from the sun, brushing and buffing plus the chemical reaction all starts to bring that glossy shine. It's a laborious process. I think once the shine is on the heating of the polish is not as important. He's old school but still shines his boots as he is still in the military! He likes Angeles polish better than Kiwi.
I know it sounds funny talking about polishing boots...but it's real important. I have watched my hubby do it, sat and chatted with him while he rubbed in little circles and have seen the finished product sitting on my kitchen table in the morning on some paper bags!
I think the small circles and elbow grease are important rather than rubbing large amounts on. The polish itself doesn't give the shine it's the whole process.
Mama Bear, hopefully she can find someone who can really walk her through the process.
FIRETEAMLEADERWIFE: Feel like I could shine my shoes now! Great instructions, I agree if she can have someone show her the heating method that would be best the first time. My son did have to buy room deoderizers for his room because he said it makes the room smell. I think he said he uses both heating methods but that you do have to be very careful not to dry out the boot
I don't know how they did their boots in boot camp but he wrote home and said he could see himself in them. I then asked him if he could bounce a quarter off his bed and he replied "no but it's tight". I wondered if he actually tried it.
I asked my son too. I asked if they taught him how to shine his boots and he said "kinda"...they were on their own! He puts polish all over the boot and then uses hot water with the cotton t-shirt wrapped around the finger . Didn't always have hot water in BC so cold worked but MORE labor! So he DOES put the polish on first and then goes through the labor. That is one thing he agreed with is that it is laborious process if you want a shine!
wishing my daughter was here been baking cookies all afternoon for a bake sale that my son is involved with. She really had the nack for baking and he doesn't. five dozen of cookies is way to much for me to but we have got them done with only a few minor problems. I don't understand how he gets rope into these things.
My son officially becomes a CM-Seabee today at Port Hueneme. Just so proud of him. I'll be going to the ceremony after all. Have to leave at 6:30am....not a morning person (yuck) but I'm excited.
