belovedbyhim - Very little visiting at PIR, but do NOT miss the opportunity to see this graduation from boot camp. It is absolutely amazing!!!! I still tear up thinking of it somedays. Worth every minute of the short visit you have.....Friday afternoon to Friday evening. We met at airport too in the very early morning hours. We received a guest pass with the ticketing desk and went and had breakfast with him and sat at his gate with him until his plane took off.
I totally agree with Lynette. You will never forget it. We, too, on my birthday of all things, spent about 7 hours sitting at O'Hare. Our son appreciated it very much. Although I was exhausted, it was very much worth it.
cmcninch...the Navy lodge is a economical way to visit your sailor and I'm pretty sure they are located near every base, there are other places that military families can use at a discount too!
Hi! I am new to this group. My son is still in BC with a PIR of 8/2 just 18 more days! He will be going to Missouri for A School. Looking forward to getting to know of all you!
Hi all, My son graduates on 7/26/13. We will of course be there to cheer him on. Does anyone have any ideas on good places to eat? We want to take him to a restaurant but we don't know the area. I have been recommended Flanagans and Full Moon Cafe. Anyone have reviews?
My daughter is currently attending "A" school in Missouri. In some ways, she says it is harder then BC, but it has been so much nicer being able to talk to her by phone all the time. She has enjoyed learning how to drive the heavy equipment :-),
azplantlady, My son is looking forward to A school. It will be nice to be able to talk to him whenever. This has been tough with hardly any communication BC. How long is A school, I have heard 10 weeks or 18 weeks. Can you visit during A school?
Sailor's Mom Joanne~ My son graduates from there today! I can't believe how fast it has seemed to go... that also means I will be able to see him late tonight/early tomorrow! Feel free to ask any questions... I'd love to help with anything I can!
Joanne, my son will be heading there after PIR on 08/02. It will be so nice to be able to talk to him more often than we get to during BC. Any advice for my future Seabee & this mom, Joanne & Seabeemom78?
Joanne & tabu1218- My son will also be heading to Gulfport after PIR on 8/30. He will be a BU. I am also wondering how long A school lasts so we can make some plans. Thanks to anyone who can help us Newbes out with that info.
Hi BeachMom, glad you found this group! These moms are GREAT and full of information! My son is at FLW in Missouri and will graduate on Aug. 7 from A school. We're still waiting to find out where he will go next but I 'know' where he'll be next...HOME! for 10 days!! whoohoo!!! Personally I'm hoping for Virgina for his duty station because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the colonies and all the history that goes with that part of the country but it's not up to me ;) lol
I'm sure you are so excited to have your son home for a few days, I'm jealous! I just sent you a private message with several questions about A school. I feel blessed to have all you ladies helping me through BC then A School!
Joanne and tabu my son is at SAFB. He has been there since PIR 6/21. He has been on hold and finally started class Monday night. He seems to like it there. DaltonsMom congrats on your Son's graduation. He was such a big help to my son and his roommate. I have heard such wonderful things about him. I wish him much happiness and success in his new assignment. Seabee Mom how long has your son been there? I would love to plan a trip there but just started a new job and do not have any time off.
Joanne, my son just started "block 5" of the CE A school at Sheppard on Tuesday a.m. Their group moved to days for 2 weeks so they could learn to climb utility poles in the daytime. I believe he is supposed to be done mid-Sept. They are being measured for Marine Corps uniforms.
His group were on hold for 2 weeks waiting for their class to form. He said there is a shortage of instructors. He has 10 sailors and 10 Air Force persons in his group.
We are trying to plan a visit, but dog-sitting issues complicate all three of us going. We need wisdom, and a willing beagle-sitter.
CE is construction electrian. My daughter just had her 3 rd year as a CE. They are not Marine uniforms, they are Seabee uniforms. They just wear the uniforms to Marine standard. Higher rolled sleeves and such.
They have camo now digi uniforms. When my daughter was at SAFB she vot what looked like the old Army BTU's. They are the greens. Where reg. Navy wears the Blue.
So do the CE build power lines? I didn't think the Navy had linemen. That is what my husband does for a living & my son wanted to do that for the Navy. He was told they didn't have a program for that.
My father was also a lineman. They can do that if the need is there. Most of what her battalion has done is basically run lines and set electric up. Your son will learn a moderate amount about that job. My daughter has done SW , UT, EO and BU. Lol.
They just came back from a project, my daughter was one of 4 girls and 15 males there. She was on the end of moving large sheets for like a building with rebar welded into them. That was the decking or floor and the 2 girls in the front were walking way to fast ( mine was the only one in the back) causing her to fall (She was bruised up good, as the decking around 250 lbs landed on her rt side) so she was not happy. Her dad ask why she was doing a labor job...... her answer was, if you are in the Navy/Seabee..... you are a laborer, a UT, a BU, SW, EO, CE or a ma hanic. What ever the need is at the moment. They learn moderate amount about all the jobs. Now something major is left to those that have to real knowledge.
As I recall, therw was about 20-24 in her class. Many AF,Navy a few Marines and a few Army. Not sure what ia going on with instructors, since I did see where night classes had formed. All branches take the same classes if this is what the job entails. They get more of what many like to call the Marine type training once at ECS. My kiddo said thwy were often reffered to as mini Marines. Same as the call..... Navy Hooya, Marine Oorah, Seabee Hoorah. This is just there way of being a bit different since the Seabee's were not natural born to the Navy! Lol. They were civilians, that then as my daugbter likes to state it went to foster care and was adopted. Another way it has been stated is that the Seabee's are the off spring of the Navy and Marines..... of course many Seabee's like to use the Bast**d word in there.
Kym, we are about to start deployment. I am not looking forward to this! Even though it is shorter this time, still would prefer it to not be. Lol. So glad yours is coming to an end. Always good to here when they are homecoming. Yes, I remeber the last deployment. School was built, kids were happy, Seabee's even more happy to get home to civilian style of living.
My Seabee has just been sent to her third base in the desert. This one makes me extremely scared. This small group has just gotten an extension (a few months). They will not have computer or phones. So not good. She had been skyping her (just turned 1 yr old) daily. Everything I read about this particular place drops my heart to my stomach. Not sure how I can sleep. This is her second deployment and both have been in the desert... Something about next place has me terrified.
AubsMom, My son is still in BC and will PIR on 8/2 then off to A school. When I read your post, I could feel your heartache and concern. I will pray for your daughters safety and also pray for you!
AubsMom...Please do yourself a big favor and join the group "Anyone with sailors/ soldiers/Marines in Iraq & Afghanistan". It is for Moms (and others) who have kids going "over THERE". If you felt your heart drop to your stomach when you got the news, this is where you need to be. The ladies really know what you are feeling because they have been there...some more than once. Scroll back and read the old posts and then jump in and talk. There are no stupid questions just lots of practical advice about how to get through each day. Just remember...You are NOT alone!!!
Only 19 more days til my son graduates from A school. His rate is EO. I can't wait to go to FLW to see him graduate and then grab him and go home! He'll be mine mine mine for 10 days at least! Lol
My CE in training hyperextended his knee and strained his meniscus climbing utility poles on Friday. After 5 hrs. in the VA ER, he got some Motrin and 4 days on light duty. He´s still in a lot of pain, and I´m not sure if he´ll be able to resume the class or not. I really don´t want to see him end up with a worse injury, but I´d hate to see this mess up his training. I know the Lord is in control. It is hard being an absentee mom!
The pole climbing take it toll. My daughter fell from about 3 steps from the top. Came all the way down. Hit with her knees straight since she was trying to grab back onto the pole. She said the holes are huve from so many beforw climbing them. It is easy to slip out of them. Have him talk to his instructor, I am positive he is not the first to have an injury of such. They will work with him. He may drop ba k to the class just below to make sure he is up to date and ready. A bit longer, but he will finish. It is hars being away from them. You just know that no one cares for them as we do. Lol. Hope he heals up good, but not to rush it. A knee is something he doesnt want to rush.
Thank you, Tobianne, for your encouragement. It sure does take it's toll. Did your daughter heal up o.k. and make it through?
Here's what I posted on the Christian chat here:
"Our son saw a Navy doctor this morning, and she is putting him on hold from his class. This week will be light duty and she will assess him again on Monday. This 5th. training block (of the Construction Electrician "A" school) always sees a lot of injuries. There are seventeen others in front of him waiting to convalesce and for a spot in the next block 5 class. He will also have to move to a different room with a new roommate, because he will be switched to days and his current roommate will return to a night schedule after this block. Needless to say, he's a little discouraged." The wait could put him back as much as two months.
He wants us to come and visit if he can't get some leave. He's really missing his wife and feeling lonely. He's considering whether or not it would be wise to try to switch his job to UT--no pole climbing involved.
She finshed up fine. Has pain every now and then, she does physical therapy for a few things. He will do fine. I did not know they could switch. Also keep in mind, as a Seabee, he could climb even if that is not his job. She has not done much climbing and she has been in for 3 years. She does many aspects, but climbing hasnt been one yet. I think it depends on who is around and next for whatever comes up. Deployments are different. Some do much of the job they trained for, some do not.
I hope he is recooperating well.
I'm glad to hear your daughter is doing well. I'm not sure they can switch or not, but your comment about having to climb anyway is a good point. Our son will be in the reserves (although he had planned and wanted to go active), but that may not affect anything.
Lighthouse3: Sorry to hear about your son's injury. Hope he is feeling better soon. Happy to hear the meniscus was not torn as that would have been an injury that would have taken more time to rehabilitate. Hang in there. Keep us posted on how he is doing.
Hey Kassidys mom, My son is on Ship 12 Div 325 PIR date of 8/30. He too will be going to FLW for EO. I am not too sure of what the schooling and job after will entail. It looks like a pretty cool spot to be in the military. He is very excited about doing the job, but is not very thrilled with boot camp at the moment.
EO is a cool rate. My son is graduating on 8/7 from FLW as an EO. They learn to operate adult sized Tonka Toys :) aka..anything you see on a road construction site, bull dozers, cranes, dump trucks, Back Hoes, fork lifts, and now they are doing Semi Trucks. They do watch, PT, have PFAs once a month, and have tons of fun!
There is a TON of stuff to do on base from bowling, to go karts, to two large shopping areas with tons of food vendors like taco bell, subway, etc. Theres an Outdoor Adventure area where you can rent ANYTHING you need for an outdoor experience from Archery, Trap Shooting, camping, fishing, canoeing, paintball etc. There's an area called Happy Hollow on base that is alike a big picnic park with a river running right through it where they can swim and just relax.
Taxis on base are run by a veteran's group and they only charge $1.50 per way per military person when ON base. Don't know what off base costs.
They phase up as a class so it could be sometime before they get off base privilages unless your SR's class pulls it together.
Its not a "Navy base" so your Seabee will probably be calling you to send them stuff that isn't carried at the NEX (aka PX). My son needed 5 dark blue Hanes Layflat colllar NON pocket Tshirts (crew neck style) for his seabag. If you're going to have an EO start looking for those now! They are not easy to find and they don't have them at FLW.
Debi, Thanks for the great info about FLW. It makes me feel better knowing a little about where he is going. Sounds like he will have a lot to do there.
Thanks everyone for the encouraging details about FLW. It sounds like he will love it. He is a real outdoors man, and has wanted to be an EO his whole life. Glad to hear your children have had good experiences there.
cmcninch: My younger son has already staked out the bigger TV and video games from his brother's room. We will be going through the same thing when he gets leave after A school.
Cmcninch we're from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Will you be going to the graduation? We are headed down for it..so if you want to send me a message with your daughter's name and such I'll be sure to take some pictures of the ceremony for you :)
My son received his orders this weekend!!! He's headed out to Washington DC to be part of the Construction Maintainence Battalion Unit 202 assigned to Washinton DC. The headquarters for 202 is in Little Creek VA. We're pretty excited..he's okay with it! (Mr. Excitement for ya) He was hoping for Gulf Port but that's the way the Navy rolls. He was the first in his class to receive his orders.
cmcninch did your daughter tell you that they all had to strip and rewax their floors this weekend as a result of the newbies going a bit wild when they got to FLW. My son is soooo ready to get going with "real" navy life! LOL
My son arrived in California for his A school training Saturday night. He told us he starts classes on Aug 5. After 12 weeks he will have two weeks leave and then back to California for parts B and C of his training. He told us PH would be his home base. I understand that there are three Seabee training bases. Are there certain areas these three bases cover when they are deployed?
If your Seabee went to GulfPort for A school, what airport did they fly out of from BC?? I need to get out tickets to PIR and I'm trying to decide what airport to fly into and out of. We are planing to use Southwest since they are the best price but we want to spend as much time with our SR as we can.
Beloved I think southwest only flies into midway and not ohare. If I was you..I would book my out flight for Sunday instead of Saturday. That way you don't have to worry about conflicting flight times or airports.
Hi I am wondering about A school too. My son will be going to FLW. Does anyone know what airport they usually fly out of after PIR? Also how long is the EO A school, I have seen a range from 10-14 weeks. One more question- my son said after A school in FLW he has to go to Gulfport to combat training? Does anyone know about this? Thanks for any info you have I really appreciate it.
Hi CBGB and Beachmom, Here's what I know from my son's experience. When he flew to FLW he flew out of Ohare airport. He flew to St. Louis and then had a puddle jumper to FLW. He arrived the first week in May and is now having his graduation on Aug. 9 (so he will be there for 14 weeks but his 'classes' were 12 weeks.) He is not being sent to Gulf Port (yet) for battle training. He's being sent to Washington DC as part of CMBU 202 , which if I"m correct is an Amphibious Construction Battalion unit detachment. FLW does not do the combat training..that's Gulf Port. So I don't know when or IF my son will end up at Gulf port for battle training. He's an EO so who knows...it's a mystery..ohh wait! ITS THE NAVY :) LOL
The morning after our son's PIR (5/24/13) the sailors were dropped at O'Hare at 12:30 a.m.--to wait until their flight boarded (his was 8:30 or 9 a.m.) We joined him around 2 a.m. We live 50 miles away. It was a very exhausting morning (and my birthday), but definitely worth it. Our son greatly appreciated our having come. If the sailor shows his military I.D., he and his family get very nice treatment from the TSA.
