Carmen i just googled navy patches and found a good site. www.priorservice.com Have you looked here? I was also thinking you could scan the patches to fabric and use that. It wouldn't be as heavy. Post a picture when you are done. It sounds neat and will be very special. The quilt I have with my name is one I made for my husband when he was in the Navy. If you can I would put U.S. Navy material on the back.

  • carmen (maa mom)

Thank you Quiltlady :)  I have looked on that site, but I am having trouble getting pics from ships/bases that have since been closed or retired. Thank you for the wonderful idea for the backing :)

I don't know if you have a Mary Jo's Fabric store in your area but they have some red fabric with the US Navy Seal printed all over it and it's on sale for around $5 or $6 a yard.

If you guys haven't already be sure and check out my Scrapbook in a box in the discussions above these posts. It turned out pretty cool :-)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all of you here in this group, I am thankful for all the support and sharing that takes place on here........thank you all!!

  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

Thanks Cynthia :) I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful. I am also very thankful for this site and all the help and hope we all receive from it :)

  • cathy

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and have lots of memorable pictures to scrap.

Black Friday yielded some great bargains at the craft stores.  I had hoped to get a deal on the Vagabond die cutting system but no luck.  Again, I had hopes for Cyber Monday but it didn't pan out.  I was wondering if I am looking at the wrong places.  Does anyone have a really great website that they use for supplies?

One of my favorite sites is Sizzix.com.  They have an outlet section that is up to 85% off.  However, they never really discount the machines and do not sell other scrapbook supplies. I also use Joann's but at this point I want something different.

  • carmen (maa mom)

Hi - I have spent the last 3 weekends scrapbooking for one full day. I have gotten so much done.  A friend and I scrapbook from 10 a.m. to as late as we can stay up. One of us makes lunch and the other dinner for both our families.  We have had so much fun.  I am almost caught up to the present. I told my son he needs to take some pictures in San Diego and send me some postcards of the base and his ship.  Then I have to do my girl's school books. They are seniors and I just got their senior pictures.  Next time is Feb 9 and 23.  Then my friend gets really busy so I have to do it on my own.  Not as much fun.

  • cynthia/Matt'smom@SanDiego/FN

Military friends, I just wanted to caution you not to accept friend requests from other "navy wives" you don't personally know or don't have mutual friends with (even then be cautious). In the last two days, both a local fb navy wives group and a Hawaii military community group I'm on have had individuals with fake profiles request adds to the group and then add other navy spouses as friends. The profiles are clearly fake (stolen pictures from other wives blogs, etc), and the profiles only created a day or two prior. When questioned about their authenticity, the profiles suddenly get deleted. The incidents will be reported to NICS but I wanted to remind EVERYONE to be cautious. Practice OPSEC and PERSEC and DON'T hint at anything. Al Qaeda called for its members to glean info about military member and their FAMILIES via social networking a year or so ago so please be overly cautious. Loose lips DO sink ships.....remember the USS Cole?!?! Feel free to repost

Enjoying my time in San Diego! I really don't wanna go home this weekend! Was 75 here in the beach yesterday so we will all be going back to Chicago with some color at least.

  • Quiltlady

carmen--your quilt is wonderful. Very nice. Did you scan patches onto material for the patch blocks? Make sure to take a picture of your brother, you and quilt.

  • carmen (maa mom)

Thank you Quiltlady!!!!  Yes, I went online to download them and put them onto the fabric....it took me a while but I got it done :)

Since I'm a new DEP mom and we'll have a year til my son goes to BC, I was really hoping some of the seasoned members here could give some tips on the best photos to take and the ones that you don't want to miss through the whole process. I sure would hate to miss some special photos that I wished I would've taken. I would even be more than happy to compile a list that we could put up permanently for all group members. I started a discussion thread already, so please make a moment to give your best advice. THANKS!

  • Sierrascrapper (ETN2)

I found some new Navy scrapbook supplies today. I got a set of stickers from Jolee's that's probably been around a bit, but I've never looked before so new to me. I also found some GREAT papers from Creative Imaginations and Reminisce.  There was a laser die cut of a CVN but the number is fake.  I thought I'd share with you all...

  • Ellen65

Good Morning, I'm new to the scrapbooking world, just started my very first for my son's Navy Adventures!  He graduated from Recruit Training at the beginning of August and is at GL for E-PACT Training now so I'm new to the Navy world too.  I found the Navy dress blues scrapbook that is really neat and printed off some pics from the NRT FB page and web site, ordered pages, emblems and stickers, etc from Scrapbook.com site, very NEAT!  So I think I've finished with the BC section, but now I look back at the first pages and want to redo them... uhg.   I've read through prior posts and found some of you shop at Sizzix.com, Michaels and Joann's for supplies... so much to choose from I'm a little dizzy now!  But, as  new to the empty nest world too, I'm glad to have a fun hobby I can do from home.  Sierrascrapper - I found the same paper you have in your pic here and cut out the individual sayings to use as embellishment, very neat, is that blue camo too?  I didn't see that anywhere, can you direct me?

  • LauriB

Hi Ellen65... welcome to the wonderful world of Scrapbooking, I've been scrapping sine 2003 & love it, it's such a wonderful outlet & a great way to meet friends.   my son PIR'd aug 16th & i am also starting an album for him.  I would suggest joining a scrapping groups if you have any local. Do you have any local stores where you live?   Im in South florida  let me know if you need anything or have questions.

  • Sierrascrapper (ETN2)

Welcome Ellen65! You can do this I promise. Don't over think your pages. I've been scrap booking for 16 years and I have never re-done a layout. Even the first ones I made that look like someone sneezed stickers all over them. LOL. It's a reminder of the beginning of my new hobby.

Yes that is Navy camo paper. I will look at which paper company makes it when I get home today. great idea to cut out the individual words as embellishments. I plan on doing the same.
  • Helen, T-man's mom

@ Sierrascrapper....sneezed stickers....bahahaha!!  That made my day!  I have scrapbooks like that.

I really need to get on it with my son's.  He's currently deployed and I have all kinds of stuff to scrapbook prior to deployment.  I'm just getting the stuff together and placing them in the page protectors to get them in order.  I'm saving room for his certificates and such.  I've printed off copies of his medals and ribbons, since the real thing would be too bulky.  Since I went digital with my camera, I make more books than scrapbooks, but some things are better in scrapbooks.  He's already told me he can't wait to see his NAVY scrapbook.  Better get busy.

  • LauriB

I've tried to go back to the beginning of the group and read up,  can you girls let me know of some of the sites to get military scrapbook supplies... also if you all are posting pictures of your stuff, where are you all posting to?  is it on this site somewhere or your own blogs per say...

I to got started the CM way, but quickly outgrew it and it's confines. I've seen great stuff come out from some of the home based like CTMH & Stamping up. there is just so much stuff out there it's amazing, but the industry has also died down in the years and there is less and less.

right now, my son is waiting to start his A-school in GL, it's been delayed so he's just hanging out.  Is there anyone on this group that lives in the South Florida area?  if you do & want to ever get together, let me know, also i belong to a traveling group, where we do crops all over the state of florida, just had a weekend retreat in Sebring, FL & sarasota, tampa, all over.. it's alot of fun to get away.   have a great day ladies :)

  • Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons

I did the same thing with that paper and used the phrases to do a whole scrapbook :) One of the places I used to get a lot of scrapbook stuff online went out of business :( I think I use Michael's, and AC Moore the most, we don't have Hobby Lobby. I do have to drive at least 45 min to get any craft supplies and I wish there was something local. I also make a lot of my own stuff and like designing new stuff on my computer :) LauriB what part of FL are you in? We vacation in the New Port Richey/Clear Water area every year and I usually have a make and take get together when we are there :)

  • LauriB

Lala,  im down in the ft. lauderdale area which is about 4 hours south of where you all go. Where you go is near the Tampa area & there used to be stores there, not sure whats left. alot of my scrappy friends that we travel with are up that way.

  • LauriB

here are some sites i will share. this one we have quite a few of her PDF's, have alot of fun making these types of albums as gifts, made both a boy & girl baby album from the ocasions file http://paperphenomenon.blogspot.com/

I have more blogs to share, but i gotta run for now

  • Sierrascrapper (ETN2)

Ellen65...the Navy Camo paper is made by Reminisce and it's part of their Camoflauged line of products. I think it's pretty recent. I found mine at a local scrapbook store. You might be able to find it online too.

We have 3 local scrapbook stores within 30 miles of my house and Joanne's and Michael's and I like to check out Tuesday Morning and Big Lots too. I used to work at a local scrapbook store, but unfortunately they closed 3 yrs ago :( I miss it a lot and I don't scrapbook nearly as much as I used to. I do get together with my scrapbook buddies that are still in touch from our old store. I am also part of an online scrapbook group that I have been a part of since I started scrapbooking.

Joanns has 15 cents for shipping today.  Paper is half off.  Tools are 40% off.  my new favorite place to shop is Scrapbooking Made Simple.  Shipping is free with a $50. purchase.  They do videos on You Tube and have You Tube Yummy sales to go with it. One of the products they have is called Shimmer Sheets by Elizabeth Craft. It is a fantastic product  for water.  I have a die for waves and use it all the time. Definitely worth looking in to.

  • cynthia/Matt'smom@SanDiego/FN

Thank you Cathy for the information.  Definitely going to look into "Scrapbooking Make Simple" and the you tube video's.  I have heard about the shimmer but haven't seen how it is used, I will have to observe a video for this....thank you!

Thank you also to Sierrascrapper, LauriB, for your information as well....all of you ROCK!!

  • cathy

cynthiaMatt'smom - If you get your hands on Shimmer sheets you must try embossing them.  They can also be sanded after embossing.  It is a phenomenal product.  They can also be die cut.

  • cynthia/Matt'smom@SanDiego/FN

oh how cool!  I have the Grand Calibur from Spellbinder, I love it!  I am even making my own Christmas cards this year!!

  • Sierrascrapper (ETN2)

I see a few of you have mentioned your Cricket machine for your layouts. Do any of you use something other than the Cricket? I use the Silhouette cutting machine. I am looking forward to making many of my own embellishments for my Navy layouts. I especially like being able to take almost any graphic from the internet and cutting it out on my machine. I'm still in the collecting stage for my son as he doesn't leave for BC til next summer. At this point I am hoping to get his high school years scrapbooked before he graduates. LOL
  • LauriB

Sierrascrapper, yes i have a cricut with about 100 cartridges as well as the gypsy with all of my cartridges loaded on it.. I am going to be getting the Silhouette, my friend has it & has convinced me to branch out.  I like the freedom it has to offer. I got to see it in action first hand when she designed my proud navy mom t-shirt & was able to make the sailors anchor.  my shirt turned out awesome...

  • Sierrascrapper (ETN2)

Yup...so many options with the Silhouette AND you will save all kinds of money because if it's flexibility. I LOVE choosing almost any of the 4000 fonts on my computer to cut on my machine. I know you will love it LauriB!
  • Ellen65

Good Morning!  I've completed my son's bc pages and ready to move on to PACT school at GL.  I 'Liked' the Training Command on FB and his ship, USS North Carolina, had some pics posted, the ship entrance and a bunch of murals.  I asked my son if he saw any of those, he told me the one he sees the most, so I captured it and printed.  Very nice skull (LOL) with a Dixie cup and eagle... says "Snipes run the Navy".  I found the Navy Camo at http://designsbyreminisce.com/largeImage.cfm?product=3220&camef...  Thanks Sierrascrapper.  The closest Michael's / Joane's type stores are 30+ miles and in a very busy / congested area that I avoid if I can.  I drive 35 miles to work every weekday and don't get out to shop any more than I have to, the on-line shopping works ok for me but there is so much.  I had no idea there were YouTube videos for scrapbooking, I'll have to do some searching for the Scrapbooking Made Simple .... thanks for the info!  So much available, but I need a hobby!

  • Sierrascrapper (ETN2)

We would love to see how your pages turned out Ellen65. You can take a photo with your camera or phone and there should be a photo icon above the comment section that will let you share the photo on here. I think the icon only shows up on a desktop or laptop though. You also might be able to copy and paste the photos in the comment section.

I think you will definitely enjoy your new hobby. How did the pics you find on FB print up? Were they pretty good quality? I always worry that the pics might not print so well from the internet.
  • Quiltlady

I printed pictures from the RTC facebook page and they turned out great. Walgreens computer will tell you they are less pixils but go ahead and print them.

  • Scotia123

Hi my sailor is in A School in Meridian and graduates on October 4, I want to start a ScrapBook of his Navy life and have kept a few things from BC. To be honest I do not know how or where to start can anyone give me some ideas, tips, suggestions, what to buy etc. I want to make it so that it follows him through his career. I am also anticipating a Keep Sake Box. Thanks in anticipation!!!!

  • Ellen65

@Scotia123 I'm doing the same, started in early August after my son graduated BC.  I've done all my shopping on-line, just haven't taken the time to get to the stores I hear about:  Michael and JoAnn's.  I started with the Navy paper packs http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ESTSYC/ref=ox_ya_os_product and http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Imaginations-Navy-Scrapbooking-Kit/d... and the uniform book http://www.amazon.com/Uniformed-Scrapbooks-Keepsake-Bound-Crackerja...  I also pulled some general training pics from the Recruit Training Command FaceBook page... I've never created a scrapbook before, so it's a little rough going, but I think my son will like it.

  • Ellen65

@Scotia123 .... also, the first page is a pic of him being sworn in and a pic of the sailor swearing the group in.

  • Ellen65

@Sierrascrapper I took pics of the pages I have so far, but his name is all over it, aren't we suppose to maintain anonymity?  The first page, I scanned and shrunk the first page of his enlistment papers, and added it as an embellishment.

  • Sierrascrapper (ETN2)

Ellen65...you can edit the photo you took of the pages and block the name out before you share the pic with us.  I will look up a few helpful websites for you new scrapbookers to help get you started.  It might make it a bit easier for you. I worked at a scrapbook store for 10 years and we had people come in all the time who were trying to put albums together who had never done it before.

    Items you definitely want/need:

Paper Trimmer (12" or larger preferred)

Adhesive...I suggest a 2-way glue pen, glue dots, photo squares.  You can get the glue dots and the photo squares in dispensers.

    Cardstock

    Patterned Paper

    Scissors (Fine Tip)

Embellishments (stickers, ribbon, charms, chipboard shapes)

    Archival Quality Pen (for journaling)

Letter Stamps and Ink Pad (personal choice, not necessary...but great to use for making titles for your pages)

    Tweezers (specifically for paper crafting)

    Corner Rounder Punch

  • Sierrascrapper (ETN2)

The different adhesives are for different uses.  You will want to use the photo squares for gluing your photos to a photo mat if used, or just for gluing it to your scrapbook page.  The glue dots are for gluing down heavier embellishments. They work great for gluing down ribbon, buttons, charms, chipboard.  I prefer to buy the mini ones as I get more bang for my buck and they go farther.  The 2-way glue pen is for gluing down smaller embellishments that are usually paper. The glue comes out blue and as it dries, it goes clear.  It is considered a respositional glue as it is permanent when it is blue, but after it is clear, it allows you to reposition it on the page.  It will eventually be permanent as it stays in that place on your layout.
