@Earl's wife - that was great to see your husband do a shout out to you on the live stream today.  Made me cry!  My son was in the shop, just behind the camera.  I texted him and told him to come out and walk by they camera.  He said nope, mom, I'm ok.  Sure wish he wasn't so shy!

Watch live streaming video from usnavy at livestream.com
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Here's this morning's video from the Wasp!  (I used the embed code from http://www.livestream.com/usnavy.

That was so much fun!  And that we got to see one of "our" sailors, SO cool, especially since we had one asleep, one too shy, one off the ship on liberty.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

The actual show starts at about six and a half minutes in, but it's interesting to see them setting up and listen to the bridge running a simulation.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Wow I didn't know we saw your daughter, terrific!

  • tackijacky

Thank you Marcy for taking the time to load the video.  Family just left, been here since 1100 am CST.

Photos from Port Everglades webcam, took just 20 minutes from dock to sea.

  • MarylandMom

Wow !! Thanks so much for posting. I just got home from work.

Guess they will head back to home for a bit before their next adventure ! The seas look really rough on the webcam.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

They may be in for a bumpy ride this morning for sure.  Not to worry, my son will be standing by with the meclizine :)

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Once out of south FL, weather looks clear - thank goodness!

  • MarylandMom

Thank goodness for that !! Just watched the streaming video from yesterday. Was hoping to see my son, but. . . maybe next time.

  • tackijacky

Lol Marcy....got to always have the medicine on hand.  Is that why you asked me earlier if David gets seasick?  By the way, THANKS for telling Doc Scott to keep an eye on my baby! Really means the world to me.  On my video you can hear me sniffling, will it ever get easier?

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Honestly - NO!  But that's just cause we love them so much :)

Hey, you can buy video and stills of the Wasp's arrival and departure from the port webcam company:  http://www.inletphotos.com/FleetWeek2012PortEverglades/Fleet-Week-2... and here http://www.inletphotos.com/FleetWeek2012PortEverglades.  so far I can't get the video to load to view on the second link like they said I could; still trying.

  • tackijacky

gonavymom.....No, they do not have WIFI available on the ship.  They do have access to the computers for limited time and limited access.  There is a Internet Cafe not too far from the piers, that my son hangs out at, not sure of the hours.  He also has a Verizon 4G Hot Spot, that runs about 50.00 a month, and Verizon does give a Military discount.  Hope this helps.

  • tackijacky

Thank you Marcy for the links....We finally got to see them manning the rails, and yes I got a peek at David too, his frame.

  • Earl's_Wife

Gonavymom - There's Liberty Center around the base, those are like community center for single sailors. They provide all kind of electronic games, pool, movies, sometimes free meals and most of them have free WIFI, if not they will have actual computers they can get on and use the Internet. The Centers also have all kinds excursion and other activities at non or very little cost to raise morale of the single sailors.
  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Earl's wife is right! I've been to the one in Building C-9 on the Norfolk base, at the intersection of Bacon and Gilbert Streets, has a Starbucks, two really nice lounges with flatscreen TVs and wifi, pool tables, and movies; upstairs is the Internet Cafe with computers.  There is also a small NEX, a post office, and a food court with Five Guys Burgers, Subway, yogurt/smoothies, and an Asian takeout.  Link:  Norfolk Naval Base Liberty Centers

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

tons of photos from Fleet Week Ft Lauderdale:  DVIDS USS Wasp fleet Week

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Tell her to sign up for the monthly Jeopardy! night, she'll really wonder about you lol

  • Earl's_Wife

Gonavy - I'm glad she is happy to be on the ship and like I said before you have my number if she needs anything I'm just a call away.

If you want to show her that you know more than her tell her about the water park and $2 movies at the Little Creek Base, is like 15 min from NOB = Norfolk base

I have not been to the water park yet but I go to the movies all the time, the show fairly new movies. Just taken out of the theaters, some till on the theater when they show them and is only $2 they also have discounted snacks. They show Friday - Sunday and she can find what is playing by searching "gator theater mwr" that's how I do it cause I always forget the link :)
  • Earl's_Wife

I'm happy she's meeting people, probably they went to Lynnheaven Mall most of the people I know go there because is big and have many stores. I personally like better MacArthur Mall but that is just me.

I hope you are feeling better now that she is meeting people and discovering new places.
  • Earl's_Wife

As far as I know July should be fine. Ask her for the schedule if you dont have it yet, but just keep in mind that it change all the time and in a moments notice.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hey Wasp family!  The time has come for my son's team to be assigned to another ship.  This has been a great experience meeting you all and I wish you and your sailors the absolute best, so much to be proud of each and every moment.

gonavymom, you're in good hands here for sure - and you'll be passing on all the wisdom you gain to the next new mom soon.

I'm on the groups Norfolk Sailors Family & Friends (pretty active group) and Amphibious (Gator Navy) too, good group for LHD people.

Hope you don't mind if I keep up on your news!  :)  Take care, Marcy

  • Earl's_Wife

We all are exited and happy :) I will be leaving on Friday to meet with my sailor. I am really hoping that his leave gets approve, fingers cross ladies.
  • Earl's_Wife

I know I have been out of contact. I finally started working again, it was really hard to find a job here since we moved in January. I am working at the CDC on base and the kiddos got me super sick, so I have been from work to bed and from bed to work.
  • Earl's_Wife

I'm taking my good camera and will send you some pictures
  • tackijacky

Here is a webcam I found for NY Harbor, not sure if that is where they will be, but we can watch: http://nyharborwebcam.com/

  • MarylandMom

Hi Everyone !  tackijacky, I hope that webcam is the one !!  I really enjoyed watching the cams from the Florida trip !!

Well we had our shocker last week. My son surprised us with a visit home. We hadnt seen him since Jan, so it was a pleasant surprise. Mothers day weekend too !! Then we find out, it was because he was going to a concert in Scranton, Pa !! Ok, so I was a second thought, I'll take it. Then he told us to sit down, something he wanted to tell us. Oh no, the girlfriend was with him. What was coming ?? The 2 of them had gotten married, on one of her visits to Norfolk !! What ?? No way . The kicker was, they did it in MARCH !!  Oh yeah.  Didnt tell us anything. He had been waiting to earn leave, to come home to tell us in person. Didnt want to give the news over the phone.I told him, "what the heavy breathing and the thump you heard wasnt satisfying enough for you. You had to come home, so you could see the color drain from my face and my mouth hit the floor " !! I wasnt happy at all. He just had a 9yr relationship, with the girl we all (including him) thought he was marrying. Before she started running on him when he left for A & C school. They broke up in Oct. Started talking to this girl in late Nov. Finally went out when he came home for Christmas. She has made a few weekend trips to Norfolk from Jan til March, and they felt the need to get married. I'm trying to cope. She isnt the girl I would have ever thought he would be with, let alone marry, but . .  I'm going to support them, and hope this makes him happy. So now, he wants us to move her and his stuff for him !!  Wow, we are important now !! He has applied for housing at Admiral's Way on Warwick Ave. Looks very nice from web. Wondering if anyone knows of this complex ??

Life sure has a way of bringing challenges and confusion into our lives !!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Hey mamas, wave at your sailors!  My son just took this a half-hour ago from Norfolk Naval Station as the Wasp left the dock and headed out on their way to NYC.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Now - MarylandMom, holy cow, what in the whole wide world....  Geez I would have been on the floor too - on my way to a nice big bottle of Xanax!!   Well, helping them move and set up their new home will be a good way to get back on normal footing.  Whew, life sure does have its way!  He's lucky to have you; kudos for keeping your cool and taking the long and positive view.

  • Lacysmom

Where is the live stream? I am not finding it...

  • Lacysmom

My daughter is on the WASP, I would love to see it!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

I found these commenst on live stream.com/usnavy chat this morning.  At least the video will be on Youtube which may be better, as the link can be saved and replayed :)

NavyNews: This pains us to say but we are unable to stream live video from New York Fleet Week - we will post the recorded video to our YouTube later today. www.youtube.com/usnavy

NavyNews: Again - we are very sorry could not provide you with the services we advertised.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Could you post those links here?  Thanks!

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Why ashamed?!  I get teary every single time I see sailors manning the rails, I surprised myself the first time and now I'm resigned to this Pavlovian response.  It's just so moving to see such a display of pride.  Hey, I got teary watching Battleship recently!  Which by the way you have to see.  I was in Norfolk and there was a sneak preview for Navy families at the amphibious base at Little Creek, so my son and I went to see it.  The experience of watching a movie based on Navy ships in a theater full of Navy people was just amazing.  It's not your typical aliens/thriller movie; there's humor (it's quite tongue-in-cheek), romance, thrills and patriotism all wrapped up together.

  • Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom

Tackijacky and I were texting back and forth while the ship was leaving Ft. Lauderdale and the Kleenex was flying out of the box - and it was raining and the sailors weren't even able to man the rails :)

There will be plenty of those days, believe me; but there's so much pride in our kids wrapped up in the emotion that it makes it ok.  I think every Navy mom has her tearful moments whether driving, in the shower, or watching TV or a Navy commercial like this one (my son being a corpsman and having done humanitarian missions, I go goosebumps -> lump in throat -> wet eyes EVERY time!).

  • MarylandMom

    Good Morning Ladies !!!

Thank you are for the support and encouaging words.

I spoke to my Steve a bit ago. There is going to be a full audience of military at the Live With Kelly show tomorrow. It is on at 9am in the east coast. They had to be there at 10am for a taping today. He is going to call as soon as he can when done. That is ABC. Hope they span the audience alot, and a ton of us get to see our loved ones !!  I already have a tape in the VCR (yes, that's what I said !!) LOL . I am not good with any other contraption !! So I hope to tape it in case they span quicker than my eyes can follow !!

  • Earl's_Wife

Marcy, My hubby and I were at the Battleship Premier too and it was awesome.

I am in NYC right now and is amazing seen the people stop my husband on the street to thank him :)
  • tackijacky

Groups from the USS Wasp at Tim McGraw concert right now, being broadcasted live on youtube.com.....check it out, camera catching numerous views of the audience!

  • Trish

I am so happy to find you all here! My son, King, just left for Norfolk on May 22nd. He was home for two weeks. I was fortunate enough to have him home for Mother's Day!! AND he got married on the 12th!! He left for boot camp just last December, its amazing how much has happened in less than a year. I dont know how anyone elses experience has been so far, but the Navy was definitely the best thing he could have done for himself. it has been a great experience. I miss the heck out of him but the pride and happiness certainly out weighs the sadness. I look forward to reading everyone elses stories!
