    I need some help.

Does anyone know where I can find good cheap apartments in the area that's close to the SUBSCHOOL that's military friendly. My husband wants us to move up there when he get's to A school, he knows he's gonna stay there for 3 months as of right now, but he wants us to be close to him.

He also wants to know if he'll be able to live with us since he has a baby. Does he get to sign a waiver for it??

  • waiting for you (SHIP 3 DIV 080)

Watching Submarines: Life on a Boomer. Its pretty cool seeing what my husband is going to do and what we are about to face.

If you haven't seen it, i recommend watching it. Pretty interesting stuff

Just found this group thanks to Bunkerbee. My son is in Groton waiting for his sub to be built. It should be commissioned about this time next year. He is hoping to do a ride along on another boat. He has not been out yet and has been in for 1 1/2 years. He's anxious and I'm nervous!

It's good to see some familiar names.

  • Rhonda8881

waiting for you - look for a group for Groton or Sub School and join it.  There are probably some people on those groups that could help you out with information.  My son was (and still is) single so I don't have a clue about housing.  You might also try to find groups for subs based in Groton to ask also.  You can start a discussion about you questions from the main page (I think) and others who know should be able to answer you.  Good Luck!
  • Rhonda8881

Terri, my son had been in for 2.5 years before he ever went out to sea.  His boat was in dry dock when he arrived in Hawaii and wasn't ready for any testing even until 1.5 years later.  He has just recently returned from his first deployment and loved it.  Good Luck to your sailor!
  • Terri

Thanks Rhonda, once his sub is done with sea trials it is supposed to be stationed in Hawaii. I will like visiting him there much more. It is also an easier trip from CA.

Hi everyone. I joined this group to find out more about SECF. My fiance is in BC right now and I have no idea what to expect afterwards, any insight would be great. We want to get married sometime in the future, just unsure when and how to go about that. This is all so confusing to me!
  • Rhonda8881

Welcome Ashley! Once your fiance knows what rate he will be, you will be able to find more info specific to his job.  There are a lot of differences between them, so you would probably be confused trying to learn everything about all of them.

Read the discussion above titled "Links with SECF and Bess Info".  It will be very informative.  How long has he been in boot camp?  If you have specific questions, everyone is very willing to help.  But it is hard to just give general info without knowing his rate (job).

Thanks waiting for you!  Will check it out.

  • Rhonda8881

Tampa - Groton is the only Sub school except maybe for Nukes.  Seems like I have read that the Nukes have a different location for A school.  He will not know about grad and go until much closer to PIR. Even if he is grad and go, some of them have a few hours to spend with family.
  • waiting for you (SHIP 3 DIV 080)

I thought there are more A schools in Kings Bay, GA and Bangor, WA
  • Rhonda8881

    waiting for you....

Unless something has changed recently that I have not heard about, you are correct.  There are other places for A school, but not for SECF A school.  Sailors go to Kings Bay and Bangor for A school for different rates after finishing Sub School.

  • waiting for you (SHIP 3 DIV 080)

Ok b/c my husband is in the SECF program but wants to be an ET
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

Nukes have A-school in Goose Creek, SC along with their Power School (6 months) then their prototype school is 6 months either up in NY or in SC.
  • waiting for you (SHIP 3 DIV 080)

Thanks JoAnne, hopefully when my husband knows his orders he'll let me know asap :)
  • Gayle

    Hi everyone,

My son is a grad and go on2/18/2011.  He can spend the day with us but will fly out Sat. for Groton, CT. We might be able to meet him at the airport and wait with him until he gets on the plane. He is an ET

  • waiting for you (SHIP 3 DIV 080)

Hi Gayle  what DIV is your son in?? My husband wants to be an ET too but i haven't heard if he is a Grab N Go
  • Gayle

    Hi Waiting for You,

My son, Matt, is ship9,div077. He knows he is leaving on Sat. the 19th.  Very AM out of O'Hare.Going to Groton, CT.  Good Luck

  • Rhonda8881

Welcome to the new members and congrats on PIR!

My son is an ETNav working on his 5th year in the Navy.  He spent 10 months in Groton with a few weeks of waiting for classes to start here and there.  He is now in Pearl Harbor and loving being an ETNav on his sub.

    Best wishes for you sailors.

  • Rhonda8881

Congrats Cheri!!!!  He is officially a Sailor now! Hope you are going to PIR.  Have a safe trip if so.
  • FLA Robin ship 12 div 092

Hi Gayle , when did your son find out he was a grad and go ? my son PIR IS THE 11 Mar and is going to Groton just wondering if they are going to be the same?
  • Gayle

    Hi robin,

Matt found out about 2 weeks ago.  I just read some of the sailors that are graduating the same day don't fly until tues.  Just depends when battlestations are I guess.  He may have to wait for classes to start.  First is BESS training. Can't wait to see him/!! 7 more sleeps.

  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

My son had battle stations on 1/24-25 and PIR'd (new word!!) on 1/28 then flew to Goose Creek on Tuesday, 2/1 and is just starting Nuke Machinist Mate classes this Monday 2/14.
  • janlee

Hi my name is Jan and my son arrived in Groton on wed. to start BESS, then on to Aschooling for training as an FT.

Im fresh out of BC groups and feel i need to inform myself about whats next for my son...thanks.

Any info on BESS, Aschooling, FT's, or subs will be appreciated.:))

  • Rhonda8881

Welcome Jan!  There is information in the discussion above, "Links with SECF and Bess info".  Also there is a group "Sub Moms" that has lots of info in their discussions also.  There is another group for moms with sons at Groton, called Submariner Moms (I think).  I don't know how active the last group is, but you can check it out also.  Good Luck!

  • janlee

Rhonda--thanks for the welcome..im joining just about every group i can find that i think may offer info on my sons school, rate, etc.....lol.. And i still dont know which way is up...:))
  • janlee

I just found out today that my son graduates BESS on April 8th. Then has ATT...then Techno...then Aschool...and then Cschool...then he retires,,,hahaha!

I cant wait until all the training/schooling is over so he can finally be on his way. I know hes looking forward to it...although...he seems to be having a good time in BESS right now with his roommates. They were all bunkmates in BC,,so its all good for them. It seems like college dorm life. (except no girls)...lol

  • Marissasmom(Ship03 Div360)

Hi everybody, Like Janlee, I'm joining all the sub groups trying to get info on when BESS graduation will be, etc.. my son started sub school Feb 14. and thats about all the info I have lol.

    Kevsmom- CONGRATULATIONS!

  • Marissasmom(Ship03 Div360)

Kevsmom..THANKS i got the date from him tonight.. He told me it's not that big a deal and should save my money and to his final graduation..  Any suggestions anybody?  Will he be the only sailor there without family??
  • janlee

davidsmom---we havent decided yet if we are attending BESS graduation. Im still reeling from the trip to Great Lakes....lol Im going to feel my son out the next time he calls to see if he wants us there. Naturally, i want  to see him as much as we can but if he seems like its no big deal,,,then we might just wait for Aschool graduation.
  • janlee

Kevsmom--my son arrived in in Groton on the 9th, started BESS on the 14th, and he recently told me he is graduating on April 8th.. im guessing it will be the same for you:))
  • janlee

That last post should have said "davidsmom"....sorry
  • Marissasmom(Ship03 Div360)

LeisureLady, janlee, THANKS.. I almost feel like my son prefers I wait until A school grad, but wasn't sure if he was just worried about my finances.. :)

My son is getting his vehicle shipped to Groton next month, has anybody had this done?  Does anybody know if it can be delivered to the base?

  • Rhonda8881

BESS graduation is not really worth spending the money to go unless you live nearby.  (That is what my son told me!)  We did attend A school graduation along with probably 15 other families.  There were approximately 35 graduates in the ET/FT/STS group that day.  Mostly it was wives and parents.  It is by no means anything like PIR, but was still a nice ceremony.  A lot of families do not attend because of cost, but we were fortunate enough to be able to do so.
  • Rhonda8881

    Wishing everyone a Happy March!!!
  • Gloria P.

Hello everyone its been a while since I've been on. Hope everyone is doing fine. My son is out to sea with his sub for a month doing trials. When I do talk to him he sounds tired. Lots of work to get done before they go out on deployment. He sounds good thou. Good thing he has a very nice girlfriend who lives out there also so at least there is someone there to be with besides his Navy buddys lol. Well I wish everyone the best....talk to you guys soon :)
  • Rhonda8881

Gloria the time leading up to deployment is a very busy time.  I did not get to talk to my sailor very much during that time.

Wishing you and him Fair Seas for his deployment.  And don't be suprised if the leave date changes at the last minute.  My sailor's did.

  • Gloria P.

Hey Rhonda8881 how are you? I know what you mean. Just glad we get to email back and forth when he's out.
  • jean

    Go Sonar Tech

    Sonar Techs rocks

  • janlee

cheri--when did your son start BESS? Mine started 2/15 and he graduates on April 8th...if that helps..:)
  • MamaMiri (FT)

My hubby got FT! He is very excited, it was his first choice. :) Anyone know how long A-school is for FT? The outdated fact sheet (you know, the one that says BESS is 4 weeks lol) says 18 weeks I think but I totally don't trust the fact sheet anymore...
  • ReneW

Hi ladies! I'm new to the group. My husband is in BESS and just got his rate: FT! He's excited. I am wondering though... is there a place where we can read about just how long ATT and TECHNO are going to be before he starts a school?

The thing is... we got married at a JOP a while back but we want to have our wedding! We were thinking this summer.... maybe between att/techno and a school. Would it be possible to request leave and just do it on a weekend? We basically have the whole wedding planned... we just need the date! and the groom! haha...

  • waiting for you (SHIP 3 DIV 080)

My husband got ET COMM, his first choice woohooooo!!! He would have to C school, so that means ill have him longer! Im sooo happy for him!
  • Carolyn17

My boyfriend got ET COMM, too!  Very excited for him!
  • Rhonda8881

As far as I can remember, the # of weeks listed on the fact sheet are correct.  BESS is only 4 weeks.  Basic Enlisted Submarine School is to cover the basics about the subs. (My son is ET, but FT's and ST's he started with graduated the same time.)

The entire Sub School is less than a year. A lot depends on how the sailors themselves;  how they do in the classes and also if they have to spend any time ACU (awaiting class up) which happens if there are not enough sailors to make a full class.  My son spent about 9 months in Sub School, all totaled, and graduated the same time as most of the people who started with him.

ReneW, I don't think they can take time off like you are thinking.  I know after a while, they are allowed to leave base on weekends, but are limited to how far from base they can go. At first they can't go more than a few miles.  Later they can go farther, but can't remember exactly how far, and can be gone overnight.  That is as long as no one in the group screws up and gets into trouble. If 1 or 2 cause problems, the whole group can be punished.  Hopefully that won't happen to your husband's group.

Congrats to all who have received their rates!  That is an exciting time. Good Luck to all of your sailor's in school.

  • MamaMiri (FT)

Rhonda, that's not consistent with the current information from my husband who is in BESS right now. BESS is 8 weeks long, he is expected to graduate on April 15th. After that he has ATT and Techno, each about a month long but self-paced, and possible holds in between. After that he will start A school for FT. From what I understand the exact length of A school varies somewhat for the different rates within SECF. After BESS, he is free to live off base with no curfew, etc. and I and our son can join him and we can live like a normal family. BESS is *definitely* not 4 weeks or I'd be joining him for good next week. :'(

How long ago did your son go through BESS/A school? The fact sheet is clearly outdated now but I don't know how long ago they changed things.

  • Mark

MamaMiri - you are exactly right across the board. The ET-Nav, FT, and ST "A" schools are ~20 weeks; ET-Comm is a couple of weeks longer.
  • Rhonda8881

My son was in Sub School in 2007.  I had not heard from anyone about the changes!  I should have thought about it though.  Sorry about that.  I also did not think about it being 4 years ago!

My son was and still is single so I did not know about the housing.  I just remember that at first he could not go anywhere very far and that when he could go further some of his shipmates got into trouble from time to time and they could not leave the base because of it.

I hope the next 4 weeks fly by for you until you can be with him again.

  • Kimberly

My son is training FT submarine what exactly ( or close to it does that mean) I'm not sure I get it and he is finishing his techno training has been thru BESS but how do I tell people what he is training for?
