i would come to the housewarming party!
i should have had one. we're having a halloween party if anyone wants to come!
hmm i am going to walk my dog in a little bit, i'm blonde and i have a little tan dog!
look for us :)
i'll make it a long walk, so if anybody sees me they should say hi!
Hi girls, my daughter in law will be moving there next weekend also, All of you should really get together and meet each other, Maybe you could do something once a week at a different house, (Play cards, or watch Dancing with the Stars LOL) I understand the sacrifice you all have made to support your husbands (our sons). I know it's hard leaving all your family and friends, to move somewhere that you don't know anyone. I know your husbands are going through a stressful time with all of their studies, but you are also going through your own adjustments. I hope you all get together and become close friends, It sounds like you are all wonderful girls, Thank You for supporting our sons!!!! from all of us Navy Moms, : )
Hi girls! I know this is ridiculously early but my boyfriend will be in NUKE school sometime next year. He's currently a DEPer scheduled to leave in April for bootcamp but is putting in a request to go earlier. So hopefully he'll be in Charleston by spring/early summer. I'm planning on moving there to be close to him but i'm not sure when I should do so. Any advice? I'm thinking of waiting until he's at least a few weeks in and has phased up. I know I won't get to see him as much as I do now and I'll be living alone or hopefully with roommates if I can find some. I'm just nervous about the whole thing because I won't know anyone, especially off base, and he's going to be so busy.
MJ- Welcome! I'm a fellow girlfriend too :) And it's never too early to start! I wish I could have found this while my boyfriend was a DEPer.
As far as waiting, I'm personally waiting until after he finishes Power school because after that, nukes have to get their own apartments and then it doesn't matter who lives with them (i.e. me!) But I'm also still in college so it works out nicely that he'll be graduating Power when I graduate college. If I didn't have this, I'd probably be down there already!
Amanda: Thanks for the response. I wish I was still in college, lucky you! When is power school? I've read up on the different schools he has to go through but there's so much information I forget it all. I wouldn't mind getting a place while he still lives on base so I can get used to the area and find a job. I'm glad I found this site so I have help figuring everything out.
MJ- after bootcamp, there's A-School (6 months for EMs and ETs, 3 months for MMs), then Power for 6 months, then Prototype for 6 months. Between that there's down time (t-track between a-school and power, grad track between power and prototype) and it can all vary in length.
I think somewhere in the discussion board is a "Your sailor's schedule upon Arrival" or something like that
what do you guys think about us all getting together to meet at someone's house (maybe mine, i'll talk to my husband) for lunch or something so we can all meet?
message me if youre interested :]
so how does friday at noon at my house sound? i know most of you have kids so we can take them outside to play in the playground in my backyard. but i'll have food and drinks and i think it will be fun to just hang out and talk :]
let me know who is able to come, you're all welcome to come!
vincent'smom- it's probably a three bedroom, there are only a handful of two bedroom houses on that side... maybe 4 two bedrooms on jefferson at all... so i bet he will get a three bedroom
I'm in an old unrenovated house. I was expecting it to be really bad by what I had heard but its not bad to me at all. My husband and I are actually very happy with it. I actually live off Jefferson. I've noticed that valour beatty has been working on a few of the houses on that street. Getting them ready for people to move in I believe.
I was just there visiting and stayed in the "Villas", I saw alot of the older houses, (from the outside of course) It looked like they have a screened in porch of some sort. Is that the "old" ones?
Hi all...I just got the call from my son that he is now officially a Sailor!! I posted something in our PIR group and they suggested I post it here too. I work with a young man who was in the Nuke program and just recently got discharged for smoking something called "Spice" which is a legal substance but NOT in the Navy. It's very popular among the services because it doesn't show up on drug tests but if the Navy finds out your smoked it...they WILL discharge you. So you might want to speak to your sons and daughters and tell them that they need to steer clear of it if...and when...it is offered.

High-level military officials are sounding the alarm about the dangers of synthetic marijuana that is sold legally as “spice.”
The Pentagon Channel is promising “an in-depth look at spice” through October.
“One bad dose could cost you your life,” Marine Staff Sgt. Josh Hauser, an anchor for a Pentagon Channel news program, said during an Oct. 1 broadcast.
On the same day, the American Forces Press Service published an article warning about the health problems and disciplinary measures troops can suffer if they smoke spice or similar products.
A slew of official videos about spice are also popping up on Facebook, iTunes and YouTube.
The official message conveys an urgent health risk and warns troops that smoking the chemical-soaked herbal blend is punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice as a wrongful use of “any intoxicating substance not intended for human ingestion.”
One video refers to marijuana as “the devil you know” and spice as “the devil you don’t.”
“You may one day have a bag that gives you the effect of normal marijuana ... but then again you may have something that is 100 times more potent and could lead to death,” Capt. Kevin Klette, a Navy doctor and head of the Defense Department’s Drug Demand Reduction Program, said in a video posted on Facebook.
Military officials acknowledge that the drug is difficult, if not impossible, to catch in routine urinalysis tests.
“We have a difficulty detecting it,” Army Col. Timothy Lyons, chief of toxicology in the Defense Department’s medical examiner’s office, said in the same video.
Experts say spice is a blend of common herbs treated with synthetic cannabinoids, which are chemicals that affect the brain in a manner similar to the active ingredients in marijuana.
The DoD information campaign about spice comes about two years after military officials began identifying the problem.
Army criminal investigators first heard reports of soldiers using synthetic marijuana in 2008. In 2009, a top general issued an Army-wide warning flagging spice as a growing problem.
In the Marine Corps, early problems arose in Japan, prompting Marine commanders to issue a ban there in September 2008. Last July, the Marine base commander at Camp Lejeune, N.C., sent a letter to local merchants urging them to stop selling spice to people who may be Marines.
The Navy reported a large-scale bust in July 2009 on the Japan-based aircraft carrier George Washington, resulting in 15 sailors getting kicked out of the Navy for smoking spice.
The Navy issued a servicewide ban in March.
The Air Force has caught dozens of airmen smoking spice during the past year and explicitly banned it in June.
SailorSeansDad - I talked to my sailor about "Spice" when he was home after A school. He told me that if anybody at Goose Creek had anything at all to do with "Spice" or anybody who does, then they are nuts. He said that it is beat into their heads to stay away from it.
That's good to know. The kid I work with said a lot of people smoke it down there and someone turned him in and that was that. I'm glad that they make it well known to stay away from it.
I'll just repeat what TN Navy mom said. I've spoken to my son about Spice several times now (thank you, N4M!), and he said they've been spoken to about it "about a million times" and he has no interest in it at all. And I don't think he's just telling me what I want to hear. He sure doesn't want to mess anything up.
Any opinions out there on pediatric primary care providers at NWSC?
I'd like to pick one that it more health promotion, than intervention based, or at least won't think I'm crazy for being naturally minded. Any thoughts?
What airlines flies in and out of Charleston? Our son will be flying home to the Detroit area for Christmas as far as we know and I am not sure which airlines to check into. Thanks!
Anyone around Charleston want to make some easy money tomorrow or Tuesday? We are hiring to do some work for the election! We need as many people as possible. Cash at the end of the day! Message me for more info!!!
Can anyone tell me what first happens when you get to Nuke Shchool? My Fiance graduates bootcamp next weekend and then flies out to Charleston that next Wednesday. What will he be doing when he first gets there? And when will he be able to get some of his stuff shipped to him because it will be coming from home which is Michigan and they don't let him have anything while he's still under "bootcamp" rules? Any answers will help. Thanks so much!
Decent neighborhoods here are : if you can live on base. Single sailors can rent the houses and get roommates on base. The areas around here are horrible to live in unless you have mega bucks or a ton of roomies. Hanahan is affordable and nice to live. Goose Creek is cheap to live for the area but the places here are not nice unless you go out by Dorchester rd. Which is a hike, same applies to Summerville and the traffic is hellacious onto the base in the am and afternoon. So it really helps to be close by. I hope some of this info helps as far as the people asking about the area.
Hello! I am getting ready to move to the area and was wondering if anyone knew the name of a good pediatrician... Specifically for babies. Also, can anyone give me an idea of the medical staff at JBC, are they good? Where do you and your family go?
Both myself and my baby have need of special care, I am type 1 diabetic and he has some issues with his kidneys, so it is important that I establish our family right away.
Hi everyone, I'm new to the group. My husband just completed bootcamp and will be flying to GC Wednesday in the early morning. I already read few of the discussions and have an idea of what is going on lol. My only question would be about Thanksgiving. Since they only have 75 miles to travel, would it be possible for me to travel up there or just wait until I get my go-ahead for moving? Any advice would be appreciated =)
Where would a safe area be to get a hotel room? I've been to Charleston (Historic District) but I know how expensive they can be and its also a bit too far to travel my sailor back to base.
Okay, one last question. I am wanting to finish my college degree and only have 2 years left. If I sign up for school in Charleston, should that give me enough time to finish? Or should I just wait until after my husband is finished with his training?
It might be worth it to check how many online classes are offered in various schools in Charleston. If he is sent off before you have time to finish everything, maybe you can take the last few classes you'd need online.
I'll have to look into it. I've gone ahead and graduated from college with an associates when my husband joined just in case. I transferred colleges before and knew the chance of my credits being accepted would be slim, so at least I have that. Thank you for answering my questions. I tried to talk to my husband's recruiter after he left for boot camp about these things but he wouldn't answer me back or even answer my calls after awhile. He got his quota when he landed a nuke so that is that.
labellaleigh- there is a holiday in express close to base, as well as a quality inn that are fairly nice and not to expensive. lots of places are pretty booked for the holiday weekend, so if that is your plan i would really look into booking your room in advance though.
labellaleigh-Nuke Wife - you should totally try to finish your degree. If you cannot find somewhere nearby, you should look at adult online schools like Thomas Edison State College in NJ. We found them because they work with the Navy and accept the Nuke program for credits, but the tuition is extremely reasonable and they have a very large selection of majors.
I'm going to talk to the colleges i'm applying at and see what they do if there is a time I have to move, whether they transfer it with no problem or if there is a fast track I can take. I could take summer classes, but going in the teaching program during the summers will kind of take away the field experiences... who knows. Thanks for the advice =)
My sailor found out he will be able to come home for Thanksgiving, I just have to pick him up =) If everything goes as planned, I may be moving up there that weekend!!! Let's hope!!!
I'm moving up next Saturday and I was wondering if there are any pictures of the housing? I've seen the few on the website but I wanted to see the entire place, not just the 2 story houses.
I'm new to all of this but I was just wondering if anyone here was a Navy girlfriend when your sailor went to A-school and through the Nuke traning process? We are planning on getting married eventually not sure when exactly but we talked about it in great detail prior to him leaving. He is currently at RTC with a PIR date of 1/14/11. I am just wondering how all of this will work once he is in Charleston for A-school and so on. I know what schooling he has to do and where it will be but not sure what my experience will be like. I am planning on moving to Charleston ASAP once he is down there.. yes all on my own. I have a lot of family near by and am used to living alone as I am doing it now while he is at RTC. If anyone has been through this experience before please let me know what it was like!!! Thanks!
NS- I'm currently still a girlfriend with plans to get married after prototype. Possibly before but just a courthouse paperwork ordeal so the Navy says yes, you're married, here's your benefits but to us, we'll still be engaged.
I'm not sure how much help I can be since I don't currently live in Charleston (I go to college in Wa state) but I do know that during A-School and Power School (the first year and some collectively) he will have to live in the Bachelor Quarters (BEQ) if he is not married, no exceptions. On phase 1, for the first 4 weeks of classes, he will have a curfew of 1am on the night preceding a school night (I think? been a long time) so he can go wherever he wants but must be back by then. On Phase 2 he can stay off-base overnight on a night not preceding a school night (friday and saturdays and holidays) only by special request, then on Phase 3 he must be back by 1am on the day preceding a school night (technically Monday morning) and doesn't need to have it approved.
As far as getting married, in order to be on his orders come the end of Prototype, you have to be married. Getting married during prototype is not really ideal considering his hours so if you're serious about it, discuss doing a ceremony during his leaves after each set of schooling is over (10 days after a-school, 2-3 weeks after power school) or during his christmas leave (either a week or 2 weeks depending on where he's at in schooling). If you don't care about a traditional wedding ceremony, then just whenever you guys can get to a courthouse lol
Feel free to friend me here or facebook if you'd like (I can send you a private message to find me on facebook). I'd love to know another girlfriend :)
I have gotten my bachelor's degree completely on-line and I am getting ready to get my Master's the same way. One university was in Arizona near my home, but the other one is in Texas. Look on-line for On-Line College degrees. You will be surprised by what you find. Education is getting much more flexible and very competitive.
amanda- thanks!! Also, how far in advance do you need to be married in order to be on his orders for when he is stationed?.. And when does he get those orders? If you know please help! If not.. thanks for helping as much as you did! Love all the girls here everyone is so supportive and willing to help
You know, I don't know. My boyfriend just started Power School. I think I've heard they get their orders 2 months before Prototype ends? And besides a few days for paperwork, then just before then! Probably better safe than sorry and do it within the first few months of starting Prototype.
NS & Amanda - I am also a Nuke girlfriend. My boyfriend left for boot camp on Nov 9th, and I am still waiting on the form letter. I am guessing from what I have read on here that he will have a PIR date of 1/14/11. Hoping to get that letter soon! We are also planning to get married, hopefully this summer after A-school. I am moving down the Charleston in a week as I was able to find a job down there. I am new to this website and haven't quite figured out all the features, but feel free to friend me on here and we can chat about everything! I would love to get to know others going through the same things!
