WolfpackGirl- We are in the same situation!! My boyfriend left November 9th and I am hoping to move there ASAP! He wants me down there by end of February but not sure if that can be arranged so soon. Is it possible his mom or dad could have received the form letter? I got his in the mail on Monday (11/15) so exactly a week ago now.
amanda- He wants to get married right after A-school likely while on leave before he goes onto Power School! But we will see. . Time will tell what actually happens!
NS- I talked to his Dad last week and he still hadn't received anything yet. He told me as soon as he heard something he would let me know. I'm glad to meet others that are in the same situation! Good luck with planning your move, if you need anything let me know, I did quite a lot of apartment hunting down there. It can take a while especially if you are looking for a job before making the move. I started looking in the spring and I'm just now getting ready to move!
Well I'm sure you will get it soon! Best wishes to you. I know I've started looking. If you don't mind can you message me where you are moving to?! What kind of job did you do?
NS and wolfpackgirl- you may already know this but i was reading your posts and i just wanted to put this one on here. A lot of the apartments close to base are iffy. but here is a goose creek apartment review website. http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/SC-Goose-Creek.html
The only apartments that i've seen and been in were the Woodfield St. James apartments. They are really nice and right next to walmart. Maybe 10 to 15 minutes driving from the base, depending on traffic.
Does anyone here know much about the "Blue Star Mothers" Organization? It sounds like a really neat group to be a part of in supporting our troops. I'd love to hear from anybody who is currently a member.
Navy wife of SC ( a group on FACEBOOK) is holding a small picnic as a meet n greet on Dec 10th at 1100 at Marrington park for those of you interested here is the link to RSVP that you would like to attend
Does anyone know the procedure for A school grad? I will be attending my son's graduation on December 17. What time, where, etc. I'd ask my sailor but his phone is messed up and the communication is, well, shall we say, lacking.
NukeMom/MM~I wish I knew more about A school graduation. When you do find out, will you let us know how the ceremony was, how long it lasted, etc? My MM graduates Jan 21st from A school and I was kind of curious as well.
Does anyone know when the guys find out the date of their A School Graduation? My boyfriend is at boot camp right now and we are trying to figure out when the 10 day break will be following A School so we can plan for our wedding during those days!
I have a question about once they get to A school in Charleston. My boyfriend is in currently in boot camp his PIR is 1/14 soo only 38 more days! Once he is in A-school then goes on to other Nuclear school requirements at what point does he get his orders?
Hey Ladies. I just wanted to say hi to everyone. Im Allie and my husband Ben, just go to Charleston Saturday. He is an EM. Anyways, we have a 3 bedroom house and will be moving the 23rd! Right before Christmas which is kind of a pain, but I am so excited. We are both 20 and have a 14 month old son, Jack. I cannot wait to meet all of you and your families/husbands!
HI allie!! my name is Alysa and husband is Kevin he's an MM and w have a 2 1/2 year old son Landon :) do you know what street you will be on yet? i am on Key ST. When i come back from vacation in December i am going to have a N4M get together at my house so i will be sure to invite everyone =]
@Rosie- you should check out some of the discussions above for all the moving info and help. it's realy hard for us to help each other because everyone has so any different experiences... do you know if you are doing a NAVY move or a DITY move?
Hi kelly, ben said its either a new house or an old one that just was re done on the inside. But that there was still people living in them. So it could be that one! :)
Allie, that would be really cool, I have a 16 month old daughter. Did you ever find out what street? I live on Fletcher right behind the housing office. The people who lived there just moved out last friday.
My son's PIR is 1/7 and then he will be heading to GC. Any gift ideas for Christmas? What do they need when they get there? Sounds like he is in NAVY clothes for quite a while. What gift cards are practical for the area? Just feels strange since I can't send him anything for Christmas and not sure what he will need in NUKE school.
My son is in Power School and he always appreciates a subway gift card. It is very close and in walking distance. The chow hall is only open certain hours and with their schedule, he misses supper sometimes. He has class all day then at least 3 hrs of homework and then more if he has to study for a test. He is doing well though. I also send him tuna lunch kits, microwaveable meals/soups, poptarts. popcorn, micro mac and cheese.
Thanks for the gift card ideas. I sent the subway one and my mom sent a Walmart one. I also ordered a Kindle for him and will load it before his PIR on 1/7. He is looking forward to Nuke school and just found out he will be an ET there.
Another great gift idea is sending warm pajama pants(or if he wouldn't be too embarrassed a snuggie sort of thing) as well. Before my husband and I got married he was in the BEQ and it is FREEZING in those rooms and not a whole lot they can do about it. So him having really thick, soft, warm pj pants was a huge help and comfort to him until we got married and moved in. Anything like that they would love :) Also internet is VERY pricey for them and helping with that so they can stay in contact is a big plus also. Just wanted to throw a couple of those things out there too :)
The warm pj pants are probably a great idea. My son, who is now home, commented that their rooms are indeed FREEZING. He's getting a blue camo fleece blanket for Christmas, which I made before I heard how cold his room is, so I'm guessing he'll really appreciate it.
Best Buy is a definite favorite of Nukes :) They also have a bowling alley here on base that is really popular so good old money is appreciated I am sure too to go bowling. They do that a lot here. There is also this place called "Green Dragon" (I am pretty sure that is the name) and that is popular for the DND(dungeons and dragons guys) so they'd probably frequent there a lot, my husband sure likes it and a bunch of his friends. And normal underwear is a huge plus. Also shower stuff gets used and stolen a lot in their BEQ rooms. So sending bundles of shampoo, toothpaste, toilet seat covers(huge help for my hubby when he was here), q-tips, all that stuff they don't give them...and you know guys won't buy that stuff :) So a "shaving kit" is a great gift with all that stuff in there. They don't have a lot of time for fun so Best Buy, DND stuff, and necessities like bath stuff and Pj pants/blankets mean a lot to these guys and girls :) Merry Christmas to all of you and they are lucky to have such great moms :)
Christina, your suggestions are great, but the idea of shampoo made me laugh. I swear my son doesn't have enough hair to need shampoo! But he does use it, even though I told him he could probably just use soap for all the good the shampoo really does.
Very true about the shampoo :) They really still love to use it though and it gets stolen quite often in the male beq's. I don't know why I guess to aggravate others :)
My husband would let his hair cuts go a little longer than they should, a lot of times they do that(even though I am a bit embarrassed to admit that :) especially if they are stuck here during leaves it will grow out a good bit! Moreso body wash and cologne stuff gets taken because it is really annoying when you are running off no sleep to grab stuff out of your locked closet and head for the showers. So they leave them in there and boom, gone. Even though they make them clean a great deal, the toilets are nasty so those toilet covers come in handy they sell them at all the NEX's and PX's too! They aren't allowed to use bleach solvents in the BEQ so they use some other weird cleaner stuff and so there is a lot of mold and stuff in the bathrooms :/ There is also a issue around the windows in the bedrooms which is why it is freezing aside from them not turning up the heat and it lets in bugs. It is rumored to snow here for x-mas for those that are here and can't go home on leave. Well, enough rambling, Merry Christmas everyone!
I asked my son if he had any trouble with his shampoo getting stolen, and he acted surprised. He's never had a problem, but he said he doesn't leave it in the shower, but puts it away each time after he uses it. Guess it's easy to leave it in the showers, though, if you're super-tired.
Is it just shower items that are lifted or are there problems with other items being taken as well? like laptops...etc.
Also, does anyone know if they are allowed to have cell phones on them most of the day or if they must leave them in their rooms for most of the day? My boyfriend wants to get a smartphone, but we don't see the point in paying for an internet plan on the phone if he doesn't have access to it 75% of the time! Any advice would be appreciated!
In school he cant bring anything because everything is so confidential.. He can only bring a approved calc. if they catch you with a phone they do a massive search on your phone, clear everything off your phone and you dont get it back for days.
as far as things getting stolen.. I suggest that shower items you take when you go in and bring back when you leave. Idk about everyone but my bf has suite mates... so its 4 guys share a shower and thats it. But as far as other stuff they have locks on their drawers to put stuff in... same with the closet but the closet is shared with a roommate.
When my son was home I asked him about the shower items and he laughed. They share a bathroom with their roomate and two suite mates. He has not had this experience since the guilty "pool" would be small. He did say if you were dumb enough to leave your clothes detergent out it wouldn't be there when you went back. He also said they have a locked armoire for their things.
Ok, that's great they have somewhere to lock stuff up! Thanks! What would your advice be on the smart phone? Do they have enough time to use it to make it worth it, or should we just keep him on a regular phone until school is finished, or he moves out of the beq, etc?
Wowzer, I didn't think the shower item comment would be such a topic....
Anyway, as far as cell phone stuff goes, no they don't use can't use it much, it can't be taken into the rickover. But it sure helps if you are long distance and they don't have access to phones other than their own. You can make local calls from the Bowman and stuff like that but nothing out of area code. Hope that helps. Happy New Years.
