  • William in Nashua

I send my son packages by Priority Mail and he always gets them.  The large flat rate box costs

     $14.95 to mail.

  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

I just sent two of those flat rate boxes full of fudgy brownies, white chocolate-oatmeal-cranberry bars, mini carrot cake muffins and chocolate covered cake balls !!!  He'll be making a lot of friends real soon.  Heard that MMs in my son's class have a PFA tomorrow and a very big test on top of that.
  • cheergirl4 (Class: 1130A)

    Indeed he is!!
  • Kat (MM Nuke)

Yep, I always send my son the pirority mail flat rate packages and he gets them pretty quickly.  Last one I sent on a Friday and he had it by Wed., from Phoenix.

Now that he has his truck, I'm not sending much since he can get out and get things when he wants.

Hey everyone! I'm so excited, going to be moving to SC!

How is it over there? would love some hints and advice

  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

I've heard it is hot and buggy !!!!!   Other than that, not much else.

  • Sharon ~ K's Mom

mnsancerz, Our son and his wife moved down in December, so they will have their "first" summer there. It has been nice, sunny, hot, rainy, stormy, pretty much everything except the cold and snow that we have gotten in MI. There are bugs and stuff, you would expect it being a southern state.

    Good Luck and Welcome!!

  • hlyturner (ship 11/ div 200)

  • cheergirl4 (Class: 1130A)

Happy mother's day to all the wonderful navy moms!!!
  • hikermom

kendrasue, I thought I sent a message to you re the vehicle but now it looks like I didn't. Is it still available? Let me know, thanks!
  • hikermom

Oh, this is so funny about calling it  'shark bite'! I love it! We used to have a Saturn with a stick in CA and loved it. Non Navy son totaled it - but all that mattered was that he was OK - and he was.
  • NF Mom

Looks a lot better than it sounded :)
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

Good afternoon Ladies!  My new Sailor just PIR'd yesterday 5/13!  He arrived Goose Creek this afternoon!  I guess I'll be joining in on conversations and I'm sure I'll be having lots of questions.  I'll be accepting any advice and insights I can get!
  • MomofNuke

Monday morning 1107 has comp test so I'm praying my son & classmates do well.  I know he'll be glad when it's over.  I think he's a little burned out. I'm guessing most of his classmates feel the same.
  • quiltblue

Welcome Mama-C! I am so excited that he graduated! Your photos were wonderful!
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

Oh mama, there is much to be learned here from others.  Get in, sit down, buckle up and hold on cuz we are all in this fun and bumpy ride!!

An update, my MM is home on leave since this past Friday evening and I can't even tell you how wonderful it is to have him around.  Got wise though, knew that his university student girlfriend would be taking up most of his time, we invited her into one of our spare bedrooms and told her she would stay with us every night while he is here.  Conniving, huh???  Hey, a mom has to figure out how to spend time with her boy - even if it is with girlfriend in tow, right?  It's working just fine and everybody gets their fix with having a Navy boy home.  lol

  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

Penny, How smart you are!  My son does not have a local girlfriend and he chose to spend his time at home on his last leave with friends I would NOT care to put up in my house.  He knows I don't care for them (at all, that's why I am glad he is in the Navy now) so he does not bring those around.  THe friends he had that I like are in college and they did come around some since his leave was at Christmas.
  • Sharon ~ K's Mom

Penny, love your way of thinking!!! Enjoy having him home for a bit! We had Kelsey here with us for quite some time and when she left for college she would come back on the weekends. She lived with us while Diego was in boot after she withdrew from college and we planned their wedding. Things work out well when mama is in charge!!! lol

  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

Sharon,  Is your son a Nuke?  So is mine! He just got there this past Saturday.  He's in INDOC right now waiting for his class to fill up for A School.
  • Sharon ~ K's Mom

Mama C, yes my son, Diego (Kyle) is a Nuke. He will graduate from "A" school on 03 June. He is going to be 19 years old in August and he and his wife, Kelsey were married on 22 December. They live in on base housing and so far doing well. We miss them like crazy and I think that goes without saying for any mom.

Enjoy the Nuke ride, it will have its ups and downs, come often and ask any questions you may have. There are so many ahead of both of us that are wonderful about answering any and all questions!!!

  • MomofNuke

Hi Kendrasue,  The class is A school 1107.  Comps were Monday.  Graduation is Friday.  He said he & his classmates are happy comps are over & they are all have the petty officer insignia on their uniforms now, although officially they aren't petty officers until graduation.  I would have liked to go to A school graduation, but my son wants me to come to Power school graduation which should be December, I wouldn't have been able to go to both as I live in California.  Could not get the time of work & the cost for both trips just isn't in the budget.

Congratulation to A school class 1107!

  • MomofNuke

Thank you.  That makes me feel better.  Hopefully he will be graduating from Power school in December & I will take a long vacation.  I'd like to see that part of the country & if he can get away for a bit, I'll bring him with me.

Congratulations to your son!  That's wonderful.  I hope you will be able to spend time with him before he has to go to his sub or ship.  You must be very proud, it's a big accomplishment to go through the Nuk program.

  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

Sharon, I'm sure I'll eventually have many questions.  I just got used to all the Boot Camp stuff and now I have to switch gears for A School.  Like I said, he's still in INDOC - for how long.....who knows?  He is liking it right now, especially that he can use his phone and computer!  I'm liking it too - getting to talk to my son is nice.

He doesn't have his computer hooked up yet in his room - I guess Comcast has to come in and activate it.  My son said it will probably cost him $70/month!?  Are you kidding me?  I hope that's not right - seems really high, even with an eventual roommate.

I'll be back here soon, I'm sure.  Thanks!

  • mn linda (nuke MM ELT Groton CT)

Mama C, does your son have a roommate?  Most share internet which cuts the price in half.
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

MN - He doesn't have a roommate yet.  He's in INDOC and waiting for a roomie.  I guess he has suite mates in the next room, but they're already in A School.  It's funny how all of a sudden something like internet gets put on hold because of money!  He's watching what he spends now that it's his own money!

    haha

  • amanda

Mama C- Yes, Comcast is such a rip-off on base. They're aware the sailors don't have many options for internet and price accordingly.
  • TN Navy Mom (Stennis Nuke Mom)

Mama C - funny how price is never a consideration while mom and dad are footing the bill!!!  NEED a fancier, high end phone, NEED to go here so NEED gas $.

Best training these sailors receive is the financial training in BC and INDOC!!  Mine now watches his $.  Of course, my DIL almost killed him over a pair of sunglasses while he was on hold after BC!!!  Love that girl!

  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

I think Comcast is next to dirt for doing that and I have fantasies of a letter writing campaign or twitter campaign to make it public that they abuse our miltary personnel!!!  I really dispise Comcast.  (At this time I don't tweet!)
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

Elizabeth, I'd sign awriting campaign for sure !!!!!  In fact, we should brainstorm on the best way to make that happen !!!!  I'm in.
  • MN Mom of MM

You would think a private company would  NOT have a monopoly on the internet service on any military base.  I am in for a write in campaign.
  • TN Navy Mom (Stennis Nuke Mom)

At our house we went to DirecTV a few years ago because of the Comcast monopoly in our area.  My parents signed up for one of their special "bundle" packages of TV and home phone.  TV works fine BUT every single time it rains for 24 hrs or more, their phone goes out.  They call me from the cell and I call Comcast.  It is NEVER EVER their fault.  last time it was, "Well your mom didn't hang up her phone, tell your dad to take a wired phone to the modem and plug it in and see if it works"  My dad was working and mom had no idea that her home phone wasn't working but did the Comcast rep believe me? H#$% NO, it HAD to be their fault.  Finally got a tech to their house, it was THEIR equipment that they installed in the basement and set on the FLOOR. Hate em!
  • Mama C (PS E-Class 1202-1)

I wish it didn't have to be this way with Comcast.  We switched to Fiberoptics that came to town - 1/2 the cost as Comcast and double the options.  Oh well.  For now, I guess my son will have to go to the Rec Room to use the computer.  I don't think he minds too much considering he can actually use technology again!  I love the fact we can call, text or chat daily if we want.  So much better than having to wait for "Snail Mail"!
  • elizabeth77(USS SAN FRANCISCO)

OK TN Mom...but please don't get me started on DTV.  Wanted to hire a hit man to

get em!!!!   I just finished my 2 year contract with them a few months ago and I went back to Comcast.  I pay much much less now.   We have a weird living situation and DTV was too expensive with 5 tvs.  I know, don't ask why we need five tvs.  Comcast is the same price no matter how many tvs you have.  I really don't like any of them.  And, yes right after the first storm my comcast phone went out.  We also have an AT&T line so I still felt somewhat connected.  We live in a house that is a main house and a one bedroom unit and as a family we occupy the whole house so there's more tvs and phones than usual.

  • mnsanchez87

I was wondering if the NEX and so on are in walking distance from base housing? Were leaving this sunday with no car..
  • quiltblue

My son waited for two weeks for the Comcast lady to bring him his equipment after his married roommate moved out and took the internet/modem with him. She never was where she was promising to be, on the correct date, or time, he finally just asked her to be honest with him and not "jerk" him around. Well, she delivered the equipment the next afternoon at the appointed time! So nice to be able to Skype and email with him again.
  • Luvnsupport

Hello! I'm new to the forum.  My SR is currently in BC but he will be heading down to Charleston in about 4 weeks.  He will find out soon if he is EM or ET.  It will be a loong road.  Just wanted to see what you have found works for you to keep the relationship strong in regards to traveling to see him.  I know long distance can be tough but it can be done:)

How often do you visit? Where do you stay? How is liberty during the holidays?  Any info is welcome.

    Thanks!

  • amanda

Welcome Luvnsupport. I'm a newlywed and my sailor has been in for about a year and a half. He's just starting the last leg of the Nuke program. I'd love to chat on Facebook and answer any questions you have if you'd like! Friend me on here and I can send you a message of my name :) It's a tough rollercoaster but these ladies here can be a lifesaver!
  • William in Nashua

Hi Lovnsupport my son is in ET A school and will graduate in 10 weeks. Wejust visited him last weekend so I can answer some questions. We stayed at the Wingate by Windham which is a fairly new hotel that is very nice and they include a free breakfast buffet that has hot food (waffles, biscuits & gravy, sausages etc.) It is about 12 minutes from the school. After their first 4 weeks of A school they can drive a car and go.off base out of.uniform on weekends. After about another 4 weeks they can stay out overnight on weekends.

Since we are his family we don’t have to worry about maintaining relationships or any of that mushy stuff Lol. He is stuck with us. If your SR is your husband you are entitled to live on base. They are in the Navy for six years and nuke school is not a good place for a long distance relationship with a gf. My son doesn't have one now and I glad he doesn't because in his case it would be a distraction this is Dad speaking. Anyway you can visit on weekends. You cannot get on the base but there is a Subway sandwich shop near the tennis courts he can walk there and meet you. You need a rental car down there to get anywhere since you cannot stay on the base.
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

luvnsupport, I see that your SR is waiting to hear if he is EM or ET.  Thought I'd let you know that regardless which ratings the SR chooses, they can be given any one of the three. He may find that he is given the MM rating.  Please encourage him to be satisfied with whichever one they choose for him because there really isn't any such thing as the SR's choice !!!  Just sayin'
  • Luvnsupport

Thank you so much for all the feedback!

William: I did see that there are three Wingates. Is it the one on university blvd, tanger or north arco?
  • Sharon ~ K's Mom

Welcome Luv, glad to have you with us. Congrats to your son! Our son graduates A school next Friday as an "EM."  He graduated high school last June, was dating Kelsey for a year and then went to boot camp. Kelsey was in college and came home to us on the weekends. While in boot camp, our son decided that he wanted to marry Kelsey, so Kelsey withdrew from college, and we planned a wedding in seven weeks. Our son didn't know what to expect for their wedding until he came home for leave on 18 December and they had a beautiful wedding on 22 December. Kelsey and Diego (aka Kyle) now live in on base housing and we are heading down to visit the first week in July. They didn't want to have a long distance relationship, so they got married. Yes, they are young but are a great couple together! Enjoy every moment, it is a roller coaster. Long distance relationships can work, it will be challenging I am sure for both sides but with a good, strong loving relationship it can work out.
  • William in Nashua

The Wingate I stayed at is on University Blvd on the college campus it is only two or three years old. They said the college owns and operates it the property is spotless.
  • Luvnsupport

    Great, thank you!
  • Luvnsupport

Amanda: Thank you! That is so nice! So comforting to know there is such a great support system.

Sharon-Diego's Mom: Congratulations to you! What a crazy, lovely journey they had!  I, too, agree that a strong loving relationship can make it work regardless.  Thank you for sharing your son's story:)

  • Luvnsupport

William: Cracked me up with the "mushy" comment.  And yes, understandable that you wouldn't want him to have any distractions while he is in school.  But as with life in general or any career, finding a balance and choosing a good partner are key:)
  • smcfar92

Hello, I'm new to the site.  My son's PIR is scheduled for 6/10.  He has been assigned to be an ET.  Would anyone have some info on that?  Is that a good title?  Is it less or more schooling?
  • amanda

smcfar92- Welcome!! He'll have 3 rounds of schooling, each 6 months, and breaks between schooling (anywhere from a few weeks to a couple months). As far as if it's a good title, depends on what he wants to do with the reactor. ET is just his job.
  • smcfar92

Thanks Amanda.  Do you know what ET is exactly?
  • Jo1

    Hi smcfar,

ET stands for Electronic Technician.  When your a nuke their are three job classifications.  The other two are EM-Electricians Mate, and MM-Machinist Mate.  My son just graduated BC on Thursday, 5-26-11.  He's going to be an EM and he arrived in SC on Friday.  They find out tomorrow when school starts but the rumor is the middle of June.
