    Thank you, Penny. : )
  • Dodie

Crystal, The nuke schools usually stand down for 2 wks over Christmas. The sailors either get 1 or 2 wks of leave depending upon a couple of factors: 1) If they are currently in school...A & Power Schools usually get the full 2 wks and 2) when they PIR and arrive at GC. I read last year that sailors that PIR'd in Oct & took leave after PIR had reduced leave (about 1 wk) over the holiday stand down.

Thanks Dodie, My SR PIR thursday and is headed to A school right after.
  • nursebubbles

My son will be heading there in October.  His recruiter made it seem like it is really hard to fail out-the Navy really wants them to succeed.  Now I'm concerned.  They talked him into Nukes since his ASVAB score was so high-he wanted to do meteorology!
  • Dodie

Wamomofchris, His PIR is Thursday...will you be attending? Is he flying out for Goose Creek on Saturday? If you're meeting him at the airport, he could buy a laptop after PIR & you could hand it off to him at the airport. If not, I'm sure he could buy one this weekend. There are discussions about his "schedule once he arrives at Goose Creek" on the nuke moms group.
  • nvmomma

wamomofchris, I think the NEX at GC has a pretty good deal on a laptop. I remember there was a laptop purchasing frenzy among my son's friends when they first arrived at GC. My son was tempted, but decided to hold out.
  • pmgcakes

Hi MomofChris - there is a Best Buy near the base, it is the highest grossing BB in the Country (thanks to our children) Chris will not be allowed to get to it, until he gets out of "indoc" and possibly phase 1, Also he will not need it for school only for his own enjoyment and downtime.  Enjoy PIR - I still tear up thinking about it.

Nursebubbles - the teachers at NNPTC will give your son all the tools he needs to succeed in this program, he just needs to figure out what works best for him and use them,  time management is so important.    It is an extremely fast pase learning curve and if he is struggling, there is always someone around to help him in the evenings and on weekends, my son has gone in as late as 10pm on some nights and as early as 5am. to prepare for test...

  • nursebubbles

Thanks for the details.  His recruiter basiclly told us the same thing.  Hopefully he will take advantage of this.
  • Mtar B (Ship10/Div266)PIR8/19

Good afternoon.... son is in A school... PIR 8/19.

Any tips or info for the mom?

Ive run to visit him once.

Didnt see much. More a drop and run trip.

Id like to plan a weekend when he gets it in a couple of weeks.

I know Charleston is known for its great food. We've done the Yorktown.

Any heads up on how long before graduation? Before Power school?

What the guys like sent to them? Thank you!

(There is a HUGE laptop discount for Navy online...like 50% off. My son is wanting a new gaming system too! I will have to find it. It is for new military.)

  • Bucksmom

Just got back from a long holiday weekend in Charleston with our son.  I highly recommend O'Charleys and Smokey Bones for good places to eat :)  He did go back to base two mornings so he could put in a few extra study hours which is very unlike him.  He just started power school a few weeks ago and said it is very hard but he is determined.  He said there are instructors at the study hall each night to help out if they are struggling in any given area.  He said they do all they can to help these kids pass.  I was glad to hear that.

  • dk4ever(2/945)

    Boy this groups been quiet
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

Big test for MMs today.  Had a big one last Friday as well - was my son's lowest score so far and he was pretty bummed.  I asked him if he wasn't prepared or what.  He said, "they just scored it stupidly" !!!!  Don't feel too bad for him, he got a 3.59.
  • dk4ever(2/945)

Nice i head down in two weeks give or take! i hope the weather was beautiful for you
  • dk4ever(2/945)

it was a dud test it happens to the best of us :) the 3.59 explains that well

  • nvmomma

Okay, I don't get it. I keep seeing that there is activity on this site, but then I can't find the activity. So weird...
  • CindyLou (Louisville)

  • CindyLou (Louisville)

  • Colten's Mom-Nuke A school 1207A

Well he was injured in BC and has been in RCU since the 4th of Aug. Now he is almost done with boot camp and will go to THU at GL until he gets new orders he told me today that they only start a new class every 7 weeks. SO we are not sure how long he will be at GL.

  • Kelli_wife of JP

Linda B- We were in Goose Creek Last Thanksgiving. We are now in New York. My husband just finished Prototype and got picked up Staff.. If I remember correctly during thanksgiving it was chilly but not extremely cold. I'm not sure about the beach, or if it will be raining or not.
  • tina41

i think i am going to check into the carriage rides.    maybe take in a movie.  im sure my son will have some ideas when we go down.  i am going to steer him away from best buy.  sounds like he has been there to much already LOL!

  • Gulf Coast Mom

Linda b - we visited my son a couple years ago when he was at Goose Creek.  We did spend an enjoyable afternoon at the beach - we had jeans and hoodies, but it was sunny and comfortable. We went to Folly Beach.  Also-Charleston has a great parks system - James County park has a Christmas light display that starts mid November.  It is a drive thru display.  We did that one evening.  Just enjoy your visit.
  • tina41

good morning all!! wish you all a wonderful and blessed day!!!

  • nursebubbles

Colten's Mom(Donna)-The class for A school starts almost weekly;it's the next one that is much less frequent.  My son needed surgery after bootcamp, so he was delayed in GL.  He was cleared to leave for GC on the 4th(although he is on light duty until the 19th) and actually arrived there on the 13th.  He will start class this coming week.
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

    thanks, Tina ....
  • tina41

my son is really good friends with a sailor that started classes in A school on oct. 11th    i know the sailors initials if it is ok to put them on here.

good morning!  happy saturday!!  wish you all a wonderfully blessed day!!!
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

While I'm not Jewish, they would say Happy Sabbath !!!!  And I will have a blessed day.  So glad to hear our sailors in Power School 1105 are only a few weeks away from graduation on 12/2.  I've already got my tickets ready to go and will be there from November 28 - December 5.  I just MIGHT get enough hugs and kisses in for that week to satisfy myself for another 6 months or more!!!!  I sure do miss that kid.
  • pmgcakes

Hi Penny - congrats to your Sailor on graduating Power School, I was in GC for1104 ceremony on 10/07,   it was held outside and was awesome, a sea of white.  we arrived early around 8am, it was starting to get pretty crowded then, and parking was filling up quick.  there were approx 400 Sailors lining a semi-circle outside of the podium area, it was pretty informal, we were able to meet S friends and take lots of pictures.  around 8:45 they started to get ready to begin,  at first i was surprised that we didnt have the pomp and circumstance that was at PIR, then I realized that school was still in session. the ceremony last about 2 hrs, they call all the sections up and one by one announce thier names, shake thier hands and smile for a picture.  we were allowed and encourage to walk around while taking photos.  it was great!  the weather was tricky in October, hot during the day and cold at night.  Im not sure how December will be, but dress in layers.  enjoy yourself and be proud,  these young men and women have worked very hard and will be in great spirits.
  • wvnavymom

Hello everyone.  My SR's PIR is 12/02.  In our group, use Nuke mom's are wondering when Nuke's fly out after PIR.  One mother's recruiter told her they don't fly out until Monday.  We've also had one mom say her son had shipped out early Saturday morning.  Is it different for different PIRs?  Thanks, in advance for your help.
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

My son had PIR at the end of last January and at that time they divided them up into groups for Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  My son flew out on Tuesday.  I've heard that these days they try to get them all out on the Saturday flights.
  • tina41

good morning!!  wish you all a wonderfully blessed day!!!

my son also shipped out on saturday morning.   we met him at the airport and spent about 5 more hours with him there.

    it does vary though.

  • smcfar92

wvnavymom:  your SR will be able to tell you his flight plans right after PIR.  Unless, he has time to call you beforehand if he knows when he calls you for that "I'm a Sailor" call.  My son's PIR was in early June, and I was fortunate enough to be able to spend that whole day Saturday because he flew out at 6 p.m..  However, I have heard that the recent PIR's SR's have been leaving on Saturday morning.  Just to let you know, you can meet him at the USO in the airport. Just take note, that they will be tired with going through boot and finishing and staying up for hours upon hours during BS.  Right after PIR, we brought him to the hotel where he took a shower, nap, relax, went to the PX to buy a Proud Navy Mom shirt, and eat Taco Bell.  Bring a Tide stick - they will protect their uniform!  He'll need cash for the airport but check because I don't know if they have a cap on the amount they can carry - not sure though.

Good luck and it's great to hear of another great sailor is added to the fleet!

  • wvnavymom

Thanks for everyone's help.  We are trying to make travel arrangement for PIR.  Ladies in my PIR group here recommended that we check with a Nuke group as to when SRs have flown out for SC in the past.  I'll share your information with our group and the other ladies with Nuke SRs.  I'm very proud of my SR . . . a little apprehensive right now as she has been gone for three weeks and still no word from her except the box and form letter.  "No news is good news". . . right?  I'm being patient with the hopes of hearing from her this week.
  • Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke

wvnavymom, I can attest to the fact that no news IS good news.  As hard as it is to not hear from our babies, you can be assured that they are being taken care of.  They keep them pretty busy and also don't allow them to write for several weeks as they are trying to break them of old habits of depending on mom and dad and start depending on the Navy team.  Once they can start writing AND sending letters, I am sure you will hear from her.  In the meantime, just know that breaking down into tears in the grocery store, church, lumber yard or the gas station are all very normal and won't go away anytime soon!!!

  • tina41

    hello all!!

smcfar--we also went to taco bell after PIR!!!  then just relaxing in the hotel.

  • Dodie

wvnavymom, my son PIR'd last Dec & was in a 900 div as well. It was disheartening initially when other moms were receiving letters & I hadn't received mine. I later learned that his 900 div didn't fill up until the following week & then they became a "push division" to get through all of the training to graduate with the other divs. He was given time to write on Sundays, so I always received my letters on Wed since I live in central IL.

  • Janis

My son's PIR is December 2nd.  I'm assuming that he'll leave for Charleston December 3rd.  Does anyone know if he'll get time off for Christmas?
  • nvmomma

Janis, my son's PIR was 12/3 of last year. The schools at Goose Creek are on stand down for a couple of weeks over the holidays and they send as many sailors home as they can. When my sailor got to GC he had a couple of weeks of indoc (indoctrination/briefings), and then the school closed down and he came home for about 10 days. I'm guessing chances are good your sailor will have the same kind of opportunity. Just make sure he applies for a travel chit as soon as he gets to GC. :)
  • nvmomma

PS My son had not accrued enough leave time at Christmas to take 10 days, but they let him make it up afterward. They get 30 days of leave a year, my son got caught up and earned enough leave to come home again in July.

My son left GL on Saturday, got to O'Hare at 5 am and his flight didn't leave until 2 pm. My biggest regret was scheduling our flight home for 6 am, not realizing we could have spent most of that day with him at the airport if we had booked later that day or the next day. I was so sad.

  • alnukemom

    Good Morning Ladies,

I have a SR at GL with a PIR date of 12/2. I've been reading through some of the previous comments. Thanks for all the good info. Glad to know that they can borrow ahead on leave at Christmas since I thought the school would probably close down. Think he will get more time off than my DD still in HS.

  • wvnavymom

This is great to know that my SR will possibly get to come home over Christmas.  It will be wonderful to have her home for a few days.  We received a letter today and she says she's doing great.  Three-hour practices for the 900 division last Sunday, so she's keeping busy.  It was a good, positive letter and made me feel 1000x better.  I know she can't wait to finish bc and get to GC though.
