I am not sure married sailors living in base housing during power school are required to move off base when they go to Prototype in Goose Creek.
Single sailors living in the barracks are required to move out of the barracks when they PCS to the Prototype command. The Goose Creek Prototype command has no enlisted barracks. Married enlisted base housing at Goose Creek is available to all commands at Goose Creek ( at least that is my understanding ). Married accompanied and single parents with dependents, have top priority for "married base house".
Some single sailors are allowed to rent excess married base housing during prototype, my son, and his roommate, did exactly that during Prototype. They were both single sharing a three bedroom house on base.
It is also my understanding that an attempt is made to keep married sailors in base housing at Goose Creek for Prototype if it meets both the needs of the Navy and the Sailor. The Navy avoids the cost of moving a household full of furniture by keeping them at Goose Creek, so all other issues being equal, they often elect to just keep them at Goose Creek.
In any event, I know that at least two married couples my son knew well lived in base housing while the husband was ( one still is ) in Prototype.
Regarding living on base or off-base. Short answer is take the base housing even if you have to wait a couple of weeks to get it.
Longer answer, there is some very nice off base housing, but it is a drive. The close in, off base housing has issues. Like low quality, crime and bedbugs.
The "base housing" is PPV, meaning privately owned and operated and a great deal. Rent includes utilities and the rent is limited to the lower of fair market value or BAH. My son rented a three bedroom on base house with a carport. When his roommate moved out ( the roommate's Prototype class graduated a month before my son's ) the rent was automatically lowered to his single BAH amount.
On-base housing is actually outside the gate, but still on military property and patrolled by base security. The neighbors are all military, no drug dealers, or who knows what living next door.
The biggest advantage to on-base housing is the location. It is just a couple miles down the road from A-School and Power School and only a couple of more miles from Prototype. That means hubby can come home for dinner and go back to study without a long commute both ways. All studying is done in a secure area so they can not bring homework home.
Others can tell you how long a wait there is after hubby arrives at A-School, but if you prepare yourself for several weeks or a month or two, you will probably be pleasantly suprised.
Our son is coming home to California for his leave. We'll try to go out for Power School Graduation. He just wanted to get home as quickly as possible this time. Another advantage of the Navy experience is that he appreciates home more.
Another blessing has been that our son's best friend from home just graduated from RTC on Sept. 6 and is also a Nuke and is in Charleston now waiting for A School to class up.
Welcome hesmyson! You might also want to join the "nuke moms" group. There's a little more activity there.
Also make sure you read the discussions above about nuke A school and your sailors schedule upon arrival. This will answer many questions you may have!
Got the news son passed Comps and will graduate A school on Friday. Also heard since he's an ET, that his T-Track won't be too long to class up for Power School.
Congrats to your son on moving on to Power School.
Tell him to enjoy his time in Power School and prototype as much as he can. There is a reason they move ETs through as fast as they can. They need ETs in the fleet.
nssmom - hopefully you can find something quickly for your daughter. Also look on the "nuke moms" site - there might even be some discussions there about places to stay.
KPT - congrats to your son! Make sure you read the discussions above "Nuke A School" and "Your Sailor's Schedule...". Lots of good info there..... You should also join the "nuke moms" site - it's a little more active.
Navynucdad - that's awesome that you got to spend 10 days with your sailor! Ours is in power school now - 8 weeks to go and he says it's really ramping up now. Can't believe how fast the time has gone by. Wednesday will be one year since he left for bootcamp.....so looking forward to seeing him in December for power school graduation!
We just went through Power School graduation at Goose Creek. It was wonderful! We has our sailor for a few days before he drove North towards Ballston Spa. He is flying home today from the north and us from SC. I don't recommend the Extended Stay on Northwoods Blvd. It was smokey and dirty.
I agree, Wendy, it was an awesome ceremony. I was so proud, I even yelled, "That's my son!" And I'm not one to speak up! Congratulations to those sailors who graduated and their families.
Congrats Wendy and chelc33 on the Power School grad! Our son has his PS graduation on 12/13. Only 8 more weeks! I see Wendy you said your son is going to Ballston Spa. How much time did he have before he had to report there? Then you mention he is flying home too - does he also have leave? We are flying in on the Wed before grad and flying home on Monday - we just hope our son has time to visit with us - of course we don't know where he'll be going for Prototype yet but he said they would know 2 weeks prior to grad. We are hoping he gets Ballston Spa....
Where did your son end up chelc? And what kind of leave time did he have to visit with you?
My son wanted to stay in Charleston...he really enjoys it there. I believe he starts Prototype on November 4. Instead of coming home, he's visiting his girlfriend in Virginia. *sigh* Those going to Ballston Spa have more free time before starting. We flew in on the red eye and got to Charleston Thursday morning. My son was in the process of moving to a rental house and cleaning his apartment on base so we didn't see him until dinner time. But we spent all day with him on Friday and had breakfast together before departing Saturday morning. Wish we could have stayed longer!
chelc33 - did your son have a choice in staying in Charleston? My son made it sound like most are going to Ballston Spa right now - do you know how many stayed & how many left? I know that what happened with this grad will have nothing to do with the grad in December but just trying to figure out the odds of where he will end up. Again he says that they are telling them most likely their class will go to BS......we are shipping his car to him in November so either way he'll at least have his car for wherever he ends up!
The sailors are allowed to state a preference but there is no guarantee that it will be granted. It depends on the needs of each station at the time of graduation. Sounds like if they're being told that BS is where they're headed, and your son has requested BS, then chances are good for you!
One year ago today my son left for boot camp - the year has gone by fast! I want to thank everyone for all the support over the past year - I couldn't have done it without my Navy Moms (& dads)!
OMG! I just typed a huge story, and it disappeared!
In a nutshell, Cody graduated 18 Oct and drove his stuff to Pennsylvania to his buddy's home. He flew home in the 22nd for a week, and he is spending much time catching up with his friends. I've cooked some of his favorite foods, and he has finally seen the house I bought while he was in Power school.
He has to report to BS, NY on 12 Nov, and he and his 3 nuke buddies are moving in to their new (literally still being finished) house 1 Nov! They are so excited to be staying together!
A couple of things to see in Charleston while you are there: HL Hunley: the oldest submarine to sunk a ship is now in a huge tank of water being restored after being list for nearly 150 years just outside the harbor. This is by far the coolest exhibit I have ever seen! It's a must see if you do nothing else. Also, the Fort Sumter tour is also very cool. We also drive to the other side of the harbor and toured Fort Moultrey. The ghost tour if the old city jail was ok. The Mellow Mushroom pizza Resturant downtown is worth every penny. The good is great and not that expensive. Definitely explore downtown Charleston. It's a beautiful old place loaded with history.
Needless to say, we had a blast. It's better being home with my sailor and watching him now as a strong young man. He is changed in do many positive ways (not that he was bad before, just better now!).
As much as I say I look forward to seeing his journey, it is still the mommy in me that misses him being close by. This military experience has been fantastic for him, and I couldn't be prouder!
I can't make the Petaluma meet and greet as I have to work that day. Unfortunately, medical offices don't always observe these holidays.
Have a great week all!
W
Wendy - that's nice that your son has so much time between Power school grad & when he has to report to BS. I hope our son is as lucky! I just don't want him to have to leave immediately (if he gets BS) since we will be there for a few days. We did make it to A school grad so we've seen some of the Charleston sights - but this is the first time for the GMA's so we will show them around!
How did your son & his buddies find the house they are renting?
Thanks Wendy! I think I did hear something about a website.....so does that mean they rented the place without physically seeing it first? If so I am glad it is working out for them - that is what scares me, not really knowing what you might be getting.......
