hello all.... My son is at BC now.. slated for PIR 01/13/12. and is going to STG A school as an E3..   how much time are they to spend at GL prior to flying to school?

  • abuon18

Hey barbydahlzz... My fiance is also an STG. He graduated boot camp 9/9/11 and finishes ATT in GL this week. Because of the holiday he ships out to San Diego for A school the Tues after Thanksgiving. The class itself is about 8 or 9 weeks but most likely there will be a couple of weeks of hold time there before classes start. Hope that helps!
  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

aboun18...  helps a great deal thanks... how did your fiance's liberty work out at PIR??

  • abuon18

Immediately after PIR he had about an hour with us on base (we went to the NEX) then he had to go back to his ship to get his stuff together and move over to the other base (there is a separate base for boot camp and regular training). It took about 3 or 4 hours, then he called us when he was ready to be picked up. Saturdya and Sunday he had liberty beginning at 5 am (although he would call us around 7 to pick him up). He had to be back in his ship by 10 for muster, so we would drop him off around 8:30/9 because he had to walk back and get signed in by 10.

    cool thanks   helps even more!!!

  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

oh what is this ATT class you speak of?

  • abuon18

It's a basic technical school, all rates that will be working with (actually I think mostly repairing) electronic equipment have to go through it before their actual A school training which is job-specific.
  • navymommo

Saw my sailor finish his A school STG today, Fantastic experience!! No other family members were in attendance for the whole class.  They are a bright , beautiful class lead by a very caring leadership.  It was very impressive and we were honored to be there.

barbydahl- not everyone does the ATT class in the beginning.  some 4 years don't do it.  Almost all 6 years do it.  It can happen before or after the a school before they get their system.  the best info will come from your sailor.

Navymommo, I attended my daughter's A school STG graduation last month in Point Loma.  That was a very proud moment for me and I too was honored to be there. One of her classmates received the prestigious NAM award in front of his proud family. She is now on board her ship, the USS THE SULLIVANS on a 6 month deployment.  Thank goodness for facebook and skype!  Her first holidays away from home will be tough.  Keeping all your sailors in my thoughts and prayers!

  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

navymommo....  ok .. his recruiter told him he would stay... but i don't know if he's taking that from his own experience since he's an STG also..  so i guess i will just wait to hear what my SR says... thanks  AND CONGRATS to you and ur Sailor..

  • navy great grand dad

does anyone have the correct url for the base STG  A school is located thr url above is not correct

  • abuon18

From what my husband has told me it's a part of the Point Loma Base. It's such a small base that it doesn't have it's own website. http://www.cnic.navy.mil/POINTLOMA/index.htm
  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

when arriving to STG A school... do they have to lock up their laptops??

  • navymommo

No, they register it and keep it in their rooms.  make sure to get a sticker for it.

  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

  • spyder013

My daughter was in san diego..it was perfect for runing over on the weekends;-) god luck to all of u!
  • txsailorsam-Donna

My son just finished his first deployment as an stg. He did A school in San Diego. He enjoyed his time thete but did a lot of waiting for A school to start then for C school. San Diego is a great place to be and a great place to visit.
  • navy great grand dad

your son will PIR at great lakes then "go across the road" and goto basic electonics shool called ATT then goto San diego for A school. My great grand son in A school now

  • RomisproudmomPIR4/27ship07div129

after bootcamp PIR did they leave to San diego right away?

  • navy great grand dad

no they attend ATT at great lakes then goto San Diego

  • RomisproudmomPIR4/27ship07div129

Thank you so much, navy great grand dad ...did your grandson get liberty for the weekend after PIR?

  • navy great grand dad

Yes he did. I took 3 or 4 hours to transision to main side then he was free (during the day) till Monday AM.

  • RomisproudmomPIR4/27ship07div129

do you recommend we plan to spend the weekend with my son? i keep reading on other groups that SRs only get a few hrs with there families after PIR. most leave the next morning?

  • navy great grand dad

I would plan the weekend there. Alot SR have school elsewhere and leave.

  • RomisproudmomPIR4/27ship07div129

Thank you soo much you have been a Great help....when was your grandsons PIR?

  • phoebe stg2

Note to Romisproudmom, My son was four years so he went to SD right after grad from BC. During his "A" school he applied for six year. So what I am saying is if he signed up for six years initially he will stay in Great Lakes after BC. If he is four years he will head to SD right after BC. This was so confusing for our son until he left BC.

  • navy great grand dad

My grandson graduation was last Oct

  • RomisproudmomPIR4/27ship07div129

@phoebe what would you recommend I do...Did your son Have weekend liberty after PIR?

  • phoebe stg2

I didn't go to PIR as my son was yeoman and in the 900 (906) working div. He flew out to SD the next day. So I'm glad I didn't go. He grad on 12/22, I think, so the cost was way high to fly at Christmas time. We went to SD four times over the 14 months he was in classes. What a great place to be stationed! He had a wonderful time and we just love SD. PM me it you have any other questions.

  • txsailorsam-Donna

Hi. My son was a 4 yr. Stg. We were with him all day Friday. We knew he had to leave Sat. For San Diego he had to ne at the airport at 2 a. m. So we went to there then also. Our flihht left at noon. His lwft at noon 30. Our gates were right beside each other. We hung out with him until our flight left. Then he got to SD only to wait 3 months for A school to fill up. Oh well.
  • phoebe stg2

"When you're put on holds it's unbelievably long...but it's San Diego...!

  • abuon18

Romisproudmom- it depends if he ha a 4 year or 6 year contract. 4 years don't go to ATT they go straight to A school in San Diego. 6 years stay in Great Lakes for ATT. If he is a 4 year he gets liberty Friday after PIR. If he is 6 year he gets the whole weekend of liberty. Hope this helps and congratulations!
  • RomisproudmomPIR4/27ship07div129

    @abuon...thank you
  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

navy great grand dad.... my son did not attend ATT in GL....  he went straight to San Diego for A school... all depends on length of enlistment...

  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

Romisproudmom....  I sent you a friend request...  glad to see you found the Rate group...  I got lots of help from a mom who's son is waiting for C school...  My Sailor IS LOVING SAN DIEGO...

  • navymommo

Hi All! and welcome to Romisproudmom, Pheobe, and Donna!!

My son is waiting for C school. Went from another school to STG but the info on 4 year and 6 year contracts is correct-  4 years- directly to SD and classup asap.  6 years- ATT in GL, the STG in SD.

Let me know if you have any questions- my son finished STG school in november and is on hold now.

We went to his graduation- were the only parents there and were treated like royalty!  lots of security and escorts....

San Diego is a fabulous place to visit.  Please let me know if you need help with this!

It's great to see some new faces on this site!

  • abuon18

romisproudmom- you're welcome! My husband is in San Diego now. He's on hold between his A school and C school. We love it out here!! I just read back through the comments and saw that your son graduates April 27th.... I would suggest asking him in your next letter if he has a 4 year or 6  year contract so you can decide how long you would like to spend in GL. If he has a 6 year then you know he will have liberty Friday, Saturday and Sunday definitely and you can spend the whole weekend. If he doesn't, he will be flying out Saturday so you can also get a Saturday flight back home and spend the day with him in the airport. I believe they fly out of O'Hare but double check that as well!!

Navymommo-I went to my husband's A school graduation as well and I was the only guest there also. I was very emotional (lol) because I'm just so proud of him!!

Also if anyone has any questions about San Diego or the base I would be happy to help :) I live here with my husband.

  • RomisproudmomPIR4/27ship07div129

Thank you so much for all the information...I am so glad i found this group :)

  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

love seeing new navy moms here...  thought i was the only NEWBIE at Point Loma ... welcome!!!!

  • cshell0909

My SR graduates on 4/6 & will do ATT in GL, is that in addition to A school or is that his A school? If that isn't his A school where will A school be, GL or SD? He has a 6 year contract. Will he also have liberty all weekend? I know C school is in SD. Thanks

  • abuon18

Hi cshell, welcome! ATT is in addition to A school. He will have liberty all weekend. Immediately after PIR he will have about an hour to spend with you, then he'll have to go check in to the base across the street (where he will be for A school). He will call you when he's finished (usually a few hours) and you can go pick him up! Saturday and Sunday he will have liberty early in the morning, like 6 or 7 am. Just make sure he is back on time each night, otherwise he could lose his liberty privileges! ATT is about 8 or 9 weeks, (not including hold) then they will send him to A and C school out here, in San Diego!

  • navymommo

    Hi cshell!

and welcome!  Because you SR has a 6 year contract, he will do ATT in GL  THEN he will do A school STG in SD- point loma. (ATT is not A school) After A school,  he will wait and do c school for his specific system when he is assigned. THey learn this  in A school.  C school is in SD or other places .

  • cshell0909

Thank you! :) I am so excited to see him & all weekend!!!

  • spyder013

Good luck to you all! Enjoy your time with your son! Once he gets to San Diego its beautiful! IF you haven't toured the Midway yet, please do;-). It is truly an eye opener with bids eye view of what the kids all go through and how they live
  • Jones

Hi! I just found this group and I'm so happy! My son is currently in GL for ATT and will be going to San Diego on April 10. I am going to visit him this weekend because I'm not sure when he will be allowed to come home for a visit and I can't wait any longer lol. Hopefully we will be able to visit him in San Diego!

  • navymommo

Jones, San Diego is beautiful.  If you can, I would suggest that you visit him for his STG graduation.  Not many people go to it, and it is very nice!  He would also have more time to spend with you if you go then- they usually have to wait to class up for C school and so it is easier to get liberty or leave.

  • Jones

I definitely want to go to his graduation but I don't want to wait that long to see him so hopefully we can go twice. I'm just not sure what we will be able to afford :(

  • navymommo

Enjoy your visit this weekend and keep an eye on airfares for sd.  Sometimes, if you plan ahead, you can get really good deals.  It is worth the visit out there!

  • RomisproudmomPIR4/27ship07div129

How long is training for an STG? My son signed up for 4yrs...
