I know. He was originally a 4 yr then signed the extension during A school so he didn't take ATT in Great Lakes. At least that's the way I understood the situation.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself. I am an STG2 stationed in Great Lakes. I work in the barracks and have the STGs that are going to ATT here. I remember my mom asking me tons of questions about navy life and not always knowing what to tell her. I just wanted to make myself available to any of you that have questions.
  • navymommo

Welcome and thank you !   I will remember you are here as questions come to mind!

  • Janell

meggs!!!! Thank you sooo much for introducing yourself!!! My son is at Great Lakes for tech school right now. He graduated from boot camp last Friday. So they stay in Great Lakes before moving to b school
  • navymommo

The "ops" course at great lakes is not the same as "a school" for STG.   As far as I know, A school is in San Diego.  Followed by "C" school in San Diego.  so... following GL Ops, they go to San Diego for 3 months of class- they may be on hold there for that class to fill.  Then, they get assigned to a C school and may need to wait for that to fill as well.  Please message me if you want details.

  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

navymommo.... there is an OPS school in San Diego as well, probably depends on what systems our sailors get assigned at... One more month to go!!
  • spyder013

My daughter was there from july til the end of the following august because of holds, etc...couldn't ask for a beter place to be;-).
  • navymommo

Sounds like there may be a few different ways to get the OPS class done.My sailor has been in San Diego  for > 1 year without doing ops.......  Holds are unpredictable!

  • RomisproudmomPIR4/27ship07div129

Barby-. He is waiting to class up for c school....
  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

i hear the wait for C school can be long.. but yea...couldn't ask for a better place to wait!!!!
  • abuon18

Great Lakes is ATT.... It's a technical school. Then San Diego for A school and C school.... C school is actually 2 different schools, one is the the ops and the other is maintenance.
  • Jodi (Britta Ship 03 DIV 277)

    How long is C school?
  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

    jodi.... Im note sure..

  • navymommo

Jodi, Length of C school depends on the system. (Don't forget to factor in "holds" until class fills.)  Your Sailor will know.

  • Jodi (Britta Ship 03 DIV 277)

    Thank you navymommo.
  • GMA of a Sonar Tech

Grandson just started boot camp on the 23rd of Oct....he will be going into

Sonar Tech..just to confirm is A school still in Great Lakes for ?  how long and then on to San Diego?...how long is this program?  Thank you

  • Jodi (Britta Ship 03 DIV 277)

My daughter graduated Aug 31 from BC and started her ATT in Chicago September 4 and graduates Nov 9 and flies out to SD the same day. Approx. another 8 weeks.
  • Jodi (Britta Ship 03 DIV 277)

A and C school will be in SD.
  • Jodi (Britta Ship 03 DIV 277)

I know she will be in SD for approximately 6 months or longer, it depends how long she get put on hold.
  • Hopetown, Ship 11 Div 301

My son graduated 9/21 from boot camp, is still in Great Lakes for A School, should be home in December and then off to San Diego- hope that helps!

  • navymommo

Usually a school and c school are in SD.  The school in gl is a basic tech/electrician/basic ops.   Your sailor will go to stg A school in SD at point loma and then hold and then c school.  My sailor was in SD for a full year.  In for 16 months before his first duty station.

  • GMA of a Sonar Tech

Thank you very much for the information...

  • josh'saunt (Patricia)

    Mine too....

  • abuon18

My husband has been in San Diego for a year this month for his A and C school, and won't finish until April, to give you and idea of the current class lengths. That's with hold times.
  • Jodi (Britta Ship 03 DIV 277)

How long was your husband on hold. My daughter had been there for 2 weeks. First week was the introduction and she started her classes yesterday with no hold time. Could there be a hold later?
  • abuon18

There is also a hold between A school and C school, that one was 2 or 3 months (I don't remember exactly) and then another hold between his C schools, for another month (not everyone has 2, it depends which system they are learning). The classes are determined by how many students they have, when they have orders for the graduating students, and also money! Your daughter probably started her A school right away because the fiscal year starts in Oct. for the Navy... So from what I understand, that's when the shortest hold times are, since they have the most money then to move forward with everything.
  • Jordan's Mom (SHIP-03 DIV-281)

Hi,  My son has been in SD for A school since the middle of November. He had a week or 2 hold then orientation and he thinks he will finish A school in February. He doesn't know much yet about when to expect C school to start. He has an idea of where he will be stationed and he says he thinks it will be @ 3 years. As this base is far away, I will not see him much duing this time so I was hoping to visit him while he is in San Diego. He came home for 10 days during Xmas which was wonderful and we talked aboiut taking turns us visiting him and he coming home. I was hoping to plan a trip up to SD during Easter to see him, but I'm not sure he will be in C school or have any time to see us and I don't want to go if he won't be able to spend any time with us. Any idea if  I can expect him to be on hold during this time in March/April in between A and C school so I can spend some time with him? Do they ever not have a hold between A and C school?

  • navymommo

Hold times are really unreliable.  We went to SD for A school graduation and the experience was well worth it.  Even though he had duty, we got to spend a few days piecemeal with him.  Message me if you want info on staying out there.

  • abuon18

Hi Jordan's Mom, I bet your son is loving San Diego!

Like navymommo said hold times are unreliable. They are based on so many different things that can't be determined at this point but your son will know ahead of time. Also, while he is on hold it is not time off. He will still have to go to work every day. He won't be in school but they out them in other jobs. For Easter, they get out early on Thursday and have Good Friday off so he will still have a long weekend. Even if he has class or work, there is tons to do on your own in San Diego, and he should be done by 3 every day so you'll still get evenings with him if you decide to visit.
  • Barbydahlzz ALUM 09/075 USS JPJ

HEY NAVYMOMMO....  havent chatted with you in quite a while...  UPDATE  my sailor got orders to the JOHN PAUL JONES... which is in the yards for A WHILE...  he is loving it... even though he hasn't used his training yet...  doing other stuff gearing up for VBSS team..(oh boy)   he's back over at ASW for school til sometime next month forget what for....

  • phoebe stg2

Over the 18 months our son was in SD we went three times to visit. Go as often as you can. What a great time you and your sailor will have. Lots to do just not in June as it really is "June Gloom". LOL!  Just go. Our son is now way over seas and I have no idea when we will be able to go see him. So I now cherish the time we spent with him in SD. FYI... the view at Bali Hai Restaurant, Shelter Island is the best... Goos Luck and give your son a big hug from me!

  • GMA of a Sonar Tech

My Grandson just started classes at GL after being on Hold since his PIR date of 12/21/12....can't wait for him to get to A school in San Diego...You are right SD in the best place for training...
