Hi guys I'm Morgan and I am a future sailor and STG, I ship out on 20130903. I am wondering how long you think I will be in San Diego for a school for. They told me 2 months, however, I have talked to other people and they said they were there for up to 10 months. I only signed for four years so I'm not attending c school
I wish you the best of luck as you begin this wonderful vventure. My son is a 4 year STG he was in San Diego for exactly 1 year (with holds, etc) He completed A school and waited... and then C school. It was a little frustrating because timing is everything. You can wait for three months for a class to begin if you are the first one on the list, or you can be the final person to complete a class and walk right in the door and begin immediately. No way of telling which you will be. San Diego is great-- tell your folks to plan a visit. We attended the A school graduation and were treated like celebrities as most parents didn't attend- our sailor was happy for us to visit. Best of luck to you!
Hi Morgan FIRST OF ALL CONGRATS!!!! My sailor is also a 4 yr STG .. he got to San Diego right after boot Mar 2012.. was on hold for a couple weeks then started... grad A school in May and was on hold again til late july... then went to OPS School... finished that in Sept and waiting almost a month to go to his ship.. so it really wasnt long at all.. He's on board the John Paul Jones now, and they are in port right there in SD for quite a while more.. Best of luck to you and if you have any questions or just want to talk we moms hang out here often ... Im also a Veteran sailor myself.... WELCOME TO THE WORLDS BEST NAVY!!!!
Had a wonderful visit with our grandson at A School in San Diego...sure can tell the difference...he is now quite a young man....he will be there for a couple of years he thinks..since he signed up for 6 years...I guess after A school will be C school than he will be deployed....can't wait to visit him again this summer....
GMA of a SR yay glad you had a good visit.... Heading out to visit next month.Going to make him take me thru where A school is besides his base now LOL
Hi, all. Hoping you can help me. My son is in the STG program (not sure if that's the right wording). He's currently at Great Lakes and has PIR on 5/3/13 (less than 3 weeks away!!!). I received a letter yesterday indicating that while he understood he would be leaving for San Diego the day after PIR, he is going to be in Great Lakes for nine weeks before going to SD. He didn't say why. Does anyone have any insight into why he now has a 9-week stay in GL? Many thanks in advance for your perspective! Enjoy your weekend-
Hi, Mike'sMom; We've been kind of discussing this subject below. If your son signed up for 6 yrs, he will probably complete ATT school at GL before going to SD for A school.
Thank you jillymom - I did read the previous conversation but wasn't sure if this was the same as my son's situation. Sorry for the duplication but thanks again for your response. So here's a new question - what is ATT school? I assume it's not doing something for AT&T! :) Many thanks-
GOOD MORNING... Mike'smom... he will mostlikely spend time after boot in Great lakes waiting for ATT school... since he's a 6yr sailor.. hahhaha NOTHING to do with AT&T.. he will move across the street the day of PIR.. from my experience those that move across the street get a very short liberty that day (PIR) but also have liberty on sat and sun UNLESS they have to pull watch.. after ATT classes are done, then move to San Diego for A school... but things change DAILY .. hahha My sailor is a 4 yr enlistee so didn't have ATT .. but has been to classes even while attached to his ship... he says "an STG IS NEVER DONE WITH SCHOOL" lol looks like you're almost ready for PIR HOOYAH!!!!
My son leaves for BC on 6/18/13. He was told he will be going to STG in San Diego. Which is great as we live in Northern Nevada and SD is only an 8-9 hour drive. My question is, typically how soon after PIR do they leave for SD? He signed up for 4 yrs active and 4 yrs inactive (I don't know if this makes a difference). I would like to plan for our trip to PIR and want to spend as much time as possible with my son. Any tips/advice would be appreciated!
Our son graduated boot camp in 2010. We went to PIR and he left the next day. I am very glad we went, because PIR is something no mom should miss. When he landed in SD he had all this free time since it was going to be a while before his class started. So there we were in Chicago thankful that we got to finally see him, and he was out in SD with nothing but free time. I still would not have missed PIR and the joy of taking him out to his 1st civilian dinner to celebrate. We spent the afternoon together, he showed us the base which had been his life and we made sure he was back at precisely the right time so that he didn't get his whole unit in trouble. We then got up at dark thirty and met him at the airport in the USO to give him all the personal things they sent home in a box so he would have it out west. I wouldn't take a million dollars for that memory.
They are really something to see right out of boot camp. They keep looking over their shoulder making sure they doing everything exactly right. (Even carrying their raincoat, without a cloud in the sky.) After SD they are so casual, it's like night and day. He was considered a Grad and Go. I guess they need the bed space in Great Lakes.
Kelly W.... my son PIR'd in Mar 2012 he's also a 4yr so he too was a grad n go.. the san diego flight was late in the afternoon so we got to spend the whole day with him at O'Hare.. My sailor got orders to the JPJ and is still in San Diego (homeport) heading out that next month....
Barbydahlzz: thanks for the response. I am definitely going to plan on staying until the Monday after PIR. I don't want to miss anytime I may have with my son. My husband is a Navy vet, so that will give us the time to visit the Naval museum and other points of interest. How often is your son out to sea? Does he enjoy his job?
Kelly...oh your welcome.... My son's ship has been in the yards for a year.. just went to the wet side of the base.. the ships had some new equipment installed and now gearing up for some sea trials.... he loves his ship even though he hasn't been out on deployment ... Im also a navy vet so we swap "sea stories" even though he's been in for only an year and a half... he talks w/ my step dad (navy vet as well) and they share stories too... my son's ship is sched to move homeports in a year... BUT you never know what tomorrow holds... have you seen a PIR?? where did your hubby do his boot? what was his rate?? I was an AME and went to boot in Orlando back in 88
Barbydahlzz: my husband went to BC (August 88) in Orlando and A school in Pensacola (PH3). He spent a few years in Memphis and then was assigned to the USS Orion and was stationed in Sardinia. Needless to say, he loved Italy! This site as been so helpful to me. I want to learn as much as I can, so when my husband and son swap their sea stories I can hopefully understand what they are talking about : ) My sons PIR will be my first and I already have a plan. One thing I have learned from this site is to be flexible. Thank you and your son for your service!
oh wow... your hubby PIR'd a month before i got to Orlando after that I went to Memphis for A school, got stationed with VP23 up in brunswick maine.. my son is 4th generation sailor, Oh your sweet, no need to thank me .... I was my duty and honor to serve.. Keep yourself glued to this site.. even after boot.. I've guided a few moms thru PIR and Aschool... oh yes... FLEXIBLE is the key... 2 weeks to go!!!!
Hey Kelly.... since your son is already and STG will he have to go to school again to learn the new systems the JPJ just installed? my son was asking...
Barbydahlzz: my son leaves for BC on June 18th, I anticipate he should be in SD for A school in August. I believe STG school is 9 weeks (?). I have been reading as much as I can about both BC and STG so I can try and keep up with my son as he goes through the process. Also, I am super type A and I feel the need to know! Did your son day much about his A school experience?
I wish your son best of luck in BC. I would caution you about estimating time frames for schools.... Holds are very unreliable! If he is early in filling the class, he could wait for a long time (months). If he is last to fill the class, he could start the next day. No way of knowing. The same for c school.
navymommo: I have always been short on patience : ) this is going to be a learning experience for me. I really appreciate this site. I can't imagine how lost I would be without all the info and support!
Barbydahlzz: Accepted! Thank you.
youngestson yes your son will stay in Great Lakes for a while. whenever the class starts it will b a 49 day Basic electronics school titled ATT, after that he will go to A school in San diego. Then more schooling in San Diego. My Great Grandson just went thru this. He went to BC Aug 2011 PIR Early Oct then to ATT left Great lakes Feb 2012 for SsnDiego left San diego for his ship Jan 2013
Hi youngeston.... Yes as a 6 year your son will attend a class in Great Lakes before coming out to San Diego. To give you an example of the timeline variance, my husband left for boot camp Jul 2011. Graduated Sept 2011, finished ATT in Great Lakes in Nov 2011, finished A school in San Diego in Feb 2012, and finished C school in San Diego in April 2013. Lots of factors determine the length of their schooling.
Here's another example of how differently the timing can go. My son, a 6 year STG, graduated from boot camp in July of 2012 and will finish C school already this July! He also stayed in Great Lakes for ATT, then to San Diego for A School, got to come home on leave for almost 2 weeks over this last Christmas. Then classed up for C School the day after he returned to San Diego! He had originally been told that it would probably take 2 years for all his training!
Timeline for our Grandson...finished bootcamp 12/21/12....GL Tech school finished in end of March...now in San Diego at A school....was told it would be approx 18 mo....he seems very happy and so are we....have visited once and hope to again soon....it is my understanding that sometime soon he will be able to spend the night away from the base....
The school is located directly across the street from Liberty Station...there are a couple of hotel ie. Marriott but you could stay right on base if your Son signs you in ..it is the Navy Gateway Lodge..or if you are retired military..also the school is located very near the San Diego Airport...also Shelter Island...
My husband in in boot camp right now. He grads. On June 21st. He has signed on for 6 years and he has signed on as a STG surface. My question is after boot camp does he attend school in Chicago for any time or does he fly to San diego the next day? Or is this different for everyone? Thanks everyone.
Your husband will stay in GL after graduation. ATT school is about 7 weeks long but he could be there longer on hold till they fill up the class. So if you go to PIR make sure you stay at least till monday nornibg since he will have liberty till sunday night.
My son grads from ATT school tomorrow in GL. There will be two more ATT classes held at GL and after that ATT classes will be held in SD. Congrats in advance to those 14 (hopefully) graduating their ATT tomorrow! And they will ship out the next day - Hooyah!
I'm getting so much conflicting information it's making me crazy. LOL...my daughter is also about to graduate high school so the crazies might be stemming from that as well. :) She's shipping off to BC on July 9th, and her rate is STG with A school in San Diego. The papers she was given last year when she signed up say 8 weeks A school with possibility of more training. I've read things on this site that say if your A school is not in GL then you leave that next day after PIR. I've also read that for this job there might be an ATT class in GL before they even leave. I don't even know what that is. And now my daughter is telling me that her recruiter is saying she'll be in GL the whole weekend, and that her A school will be six months in SD because of the advanced electronics. I'm going in circles. Can someone stop me please? :)
hi Sharla, hope this can help you my son starts ATT school again on wednesday.at this time it is being held in GL. from what i have heard it is being moved out to SD after the next two class. if it is held in GL she will move across thebway after graduation and stay there till classes start. if they move it to SD she will leave that niight after graduation most families go to yhe airport at 2am and stay with their sailors till they board the plane. they let you to the gate to be with them. ATT school is about 7 weeks long then off to the A school. i hope this helps
ATT is Advance Technical Training in GL. Right after PIR she will move her gear to the new barracks across the street, Somewhere around 1500 she will be finished and she will be on liberty until 2300 if I recall correctly. Saturday and Sunday mornings they are on liberty very early. The sailors that do not attend ATT school ship out the night of PIR. Those sailors can leave with their families immediately after the ceremony.
Sharla.......... BREATHE!!!!!! she will go to SD the next day after PIR... you will get to spend the day at the airport with her.... she's on the same program as my son .. between A school and ops school he spent about 7 months at school..its going to be an amazing ride... HANG ON AND DON'T FORGET TO BREATHE!!!!!
