My daughter heads to bootcamp in Sept as a STG-AEF. Is the ATT school still in Great Lakes or is it all in San Diego now? Trying to figure out travel plans for PIR :)
AIT is still in Great Lakes.... your PIR will be different than those going straight on to SD.... Your daughter will get to spend a few moments with you after PIR.. then she'll go back to her barracks, get her gear and move across the street to the AIT school side, depending on whether she has to stand watch or not will determine how much liberty she'll get on Friday, but Sat/Sun she most likely will get TONS of liberty... unless she's got to stand watch again.. but will have to report back to base at night. no overnite visits..
Ken's Mom.... Anytime!!! 16 days will FLY BY hang on tight .... its a fun ride!!
Yes they will send him to SD when he is done with ATT. There is almost always a hold time before they start A school, and they will be on hold in San Diego. Unfortunately he will not know how long he will be on hold until he gets to San Diego.
Sitting around and waiting for A-school is killing my son! He is ready to get started. Arrived from GL on July 9th! Still no word on when they will start. Had ATT training in GL.
My son graduated from A school on July 23. Sometimes more than one class runs concurrently, so your son shouldn't have to wait long. And don't forget about life in the Navy - "Hurry up and wait!" And San Diego is GREAT; the school is in a great location.
Kens Mom: my son called. Apparently our sons racks are right next to each other. So it was your son that is going to SGT with my son. I hope you get a call. They got an extra call as a reward for doing well on a test!
Kelly - How cool is that? FYI - I am changing my screen name to Sk8erkidsmom. I figure since we are suppose to use names that would be better. Can't wait to me you. I am so excited. What an awesome surprise. HOOYAH and thank you USN!
If your son or daughter is waiting for their school...let them take advantage of going TAD..my Grandson is currently waiting for C school since June but is currently on TAD with the EOD's...and later this month with the SEALS...in between doing miscellaneous stuff on the various local bases..and of course fishing...It is so beautiful there in San Diego
info to all from an old retiree also I have ggrandson in as a STG3. just remember STG is a seagoing rate whether he signed for 4 or 6 years he going to spend ALOT if time at sea. the longer he has to wait to classup the later he has to goto sea. I know they all want to get to there first ship but when the get there it will not be fun, my great grand son will be deployed next year from valitines till after thanksgiving.
Navy great grand dad
I loved yer post! And how right you are. My daughter is an STG2 and due to come home from 1sy deployment in next couple of months. She signed for 6...has app 2 1/2 left due to holds and ship being in dry dock. Would have been worse if not for holds.;)
Thank you, navymommo, Barydahlzz, and Kelly W for responding!! Good to hear my SR isn't the only one. :) She's still in BC in GL right now, and scheduled to go to San Diego afterward. Seems that everyone is a 6yr, going to ATT training in GL first, then A school, then C school, and it's a little disheartening. I even asked some questions on the STG facebook page where there are people working the job now, and I had responses all over the place but the general consensus was that the 4yrs were the grunts and the 6yrs had the education to do the job right. That made me sad. :( My SR didn't even get offered the 6yr spot, and we didn't know any different. Months later, I learned more, and asked, and was told there weren't any 6yr spots available, that it was about quota. Well, the thing was, the guy told her that it was an advanced electronics position that would give her a promo in 6 months, and that she'd have additional training after A school. But her papers don't say that. They say four years. They say A school only. Her recruiter backed it up. So I think she was led to believe that she was getting something that 6yrs get that she won't get. That's the problem with 17yr old DEP kids being put in a room to pick their career, without parents or anyone in there to help with the decision making. She went in there for something else entirely, it wasn't available, so she picked this and was told things that I don't think were entirely right.
That's another soapbox though... :)
So I'd like to know what you think about the 4yr program. Do you feel that your kids have a good job? WAS there any additional training? Are they on frigates by themselves or on a bigger ship with a group? What about marketability after the Navy? I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks again!
The main difference between 4 yr and 6 yr is that the additional schooling is for the maintenance of the equipment- so your daughter will certainly know how to do her job! The 6 yrs get additional training in how to maintain & fix the sonar equipment if it gets broken. And to be quite honest with you, she will get more training once she is on a ship than she will in school anyway! As for the automatic promote, many 4 yrs make e-4 in the same timeframe as the 6yrs do. If she studies hard for the exam she should definitely make it, if not her first time her second time for sure! I would suggest having her talk to her A school command when she gets to Point Loma & see if any 6 yr spots have opened up, and if not have her ask again when she gets to her ship. They can always send her back for more training.... And they often get sent back to Point Loma for additional training anyway!
Sharla - I'm also on that STG FB group; those salty sailors are a hoot! And they shoot from the hip sometimes; many have been out for a long time. One thing is certain, the STG rate if one of the best and most of their real training is OTJ. She will learn to navigate the system as she goes. My AF son grabbed a rate that wasn't what he really wanted cuz he wanted to go sooner and he is happy now. It's all about being happy and "Listen to your Chief!" lol
Sharla, my son-in-law went in as a 4 year STG and will be celebrating his 16th year in October. My son is currently in BC at GL and graduating on 16AUG. He also went in as a 4 year STG. Lots of opportunities with the Navy, you have STGs doing things other than Sonar. So not to worry, she will be fine.
Sharla..... My son also didn't know there was a 4yr and a 6yr program... I know its all for the needs of the navy. That hasn't changed in FOREVER ..it was that way while i was in the Navy and same as now... Anyway... My son is now done with STG school and OPS school.. on board his ship... and has been back to ASW School (Point Loma where STG A school is) a few more times for more classes of one thing or another.. continuing education ... ALWAYS.. as far as him doing his job... There are several STG;s in his dept.( he's on the john paul jones DDG 53,) they have a multitude of responsibilites... His ship has only been out twice since he's been with them for training, but he's got to do his job PLUS a ton of other really cool things to which IM SOOOO JEALOUS because things were sooooo different back in my day... but hang in there Shes gonna be just fine... When is PIR for her ??
Hi Sharla, My daughter opted for a 4 year enlistment before she chose her STG grade and was assigned to a destroyer where she is on her 2nd deployment since A school. She toyed with the decision to transfer to a 6 year when at Point Loma but chose to stay with her 4 year. (She had already graduated college as a math major and just wanted to get to work). She was just promoted to STG 2nd class and E5 and will have her own apartment when she returns. She has weathered many challenges while also experiencing many wonderful adventures. The greatest gift to me for all her "grunt work" experience has been her "out of the blue" offer to clean the kitchen floor when she was home on leave before her last deployment! Will wonders never cease! All the best to your daughter!
AWESOME Sharla.... don't ever be afraid to shoot us a question, idea, concern or just to vent. hahahah trust me i did my share of venting ... She's now at the stage where she's having some fun... she's (and you ) are over the hump.. and the count down days to PIR are getting shorter.... you are soooooo gonna have a great time.. I'm coming up on my son's 2 yr anniv with the Navy.. as i prepair to say SO LONG to another son as he head off to Army Basic Training in October... yea, im about to ride the roller coaster called "BOOTCAMP' all over again LOL
What is the Navy STG page called that you are on jillymom? I'm also thinking maybe I could look for a facebook page for the Higgins? My STG3 (6 year) has just gotten orders to be on the Higgins and stationed at Naval Base San Diego. He's talking about trying to qualify to be a SWCC (I think that was it!) says he's really close. He graduated from C school this summer and has been at ASW Point Loma in the meantime while he was awaiting his orders. I have a terrible time understanding all the stuff he talks about, so I try to glean what I can from other sources!
Janell..... ooooo SWCC thats very intense... AWESOME.. My STG3 spouts of all kinds of accronyms ... and since I am OLD NAVY on the aviation side, i have to google a lot of it HAHAHAHHA
My STG finally recieved orders and will report to his cruiser at 1700 this evening. I know they will be busy but what is it like for brand new sailors? Is there a tradition of the older guys playing practical jokes on the newbies? My brother served aboard Nimitz and he says veteran sailors sent him looking for onboard McDonalds and a bowling alley, among other things.
hahahhaha When i met up with my first squadron after A school, they older sailors tried to send me out for "propwash" " a spool of flight line" etc .. for those of you who don't know aviation lingo, prop wash is the exhaust from a prop engine and the flight line is where we park the planes in a line, but i was wise to their games since my stepdad was a navy vet. A-School has finally started and is going well. Should we be planning to go to A-School graduation? We are in NC and school teachers so to fly to San Diego in early October is going to take some serious planning! Thoughts?
A school graduation is not like boot camp graduation. They so get dressed in their whites but the ceremony takes all of 10 minutes. They each get handed their certificates and some pictures get taken. I would recommend planning a trip when the time is more convenient for you!
I went to a graduation at Point Loma. It was great. Not many parents come ( we were the only guests) and we were treated like VIPs It is a very short ceremony and photo op and then they have to report to holds and do paperwork unless they are reporting immediately. Message me if you have questions.
I just happened to be in town, so I went to A school grad also. There were about 20 of us and the Chief said that was the biggest attendance ever for the ceremony. Don't come all the way from NC; the Sailors don't expect it. It was pretty cool, of course. They take away your cell phone and camera when you walk in.
Boy this site has sure gotten active. My sailor is home now, he is leaving for his new assignment tomorrow in Washington. He laughed when I told him 20 people showed up for the ceremony.
I was the only one who attended my husband's A school graduation, because I already lived out here with him so I didn't have to travel for it! They stuck a chair in the corner for me and I felt like the kid who was in trouble in school lol.
They kept having to run out for more chairs; there were 4 rows of 6 or 7, so maybe it was more than 20. Does anyone know where they pick up the CD's? My sailor is giving me the run-around. If I tell him exactly where to go. . .
Well, I thought I heard them say CD; I could have been wrong. But I'm dying to know exactly where they pick them up, cuz my sailor is vague about stuff like that. I need to tell him. :)

Sharla..... this is how it was for my sailor. it was March 2012.... had all day liberty after PIR on friday... brought him back to base around 1900hrs He left for OHARE at 0400hrs i think.. they hang out in the USO for a while... thats where i found him at 0645hrs his flight to San Diego was scheduled to depart at 1600hrs got to spend the whole day with my sailor inside Ohare, you can get a gate pass as well keep intouch with your sailor about staying till sunday stuff. My sailor didn't tell me until after PIR.. Hope this helps...
Maybe Oct; I was told this by another 6 yr STG at A school grad. Not my son... Still hoping to find out exactly where my Sailor can pick up the CD of A school grad.
Since we live close...he is coming up this weekend..and I will found out all the details in getting those pictures...his graduation that we attended was in June 10th...we are so fortunate that he only 90 miles away...
