my sailor is a 4yr...  after A school he was on hold for 3 weeks waiting for OPS school to start... NO leave, then after OPS was over he had a month before he had to report to his new base and ship ( went around the bay over to NSSD...)  still NO leave.. ugh he was very frustrated... got to his ship ..from day 1 LOVED IT.   finally came home at christmas for 9 days... his ship went to port/starboard leave..and his chief told him usually newbies go after christmas but since he had been in the navy over 1 year with no leave ... he could go the first round... (YAY FOR AN AWESOME CHIEF)..

  • debmil24

After they finish A-school and Ops do they go on a ship?  What do they do with their clothes and personal effects?  My son heads to SD July 5th and I already have his clothes boxed to send him when I get his address. Not sure how much storage they have and what they do with their things when they leave.

  • debmil24

My son has arrived at A-school and waiting for it to start. He said its so different from boot camp and loving it so far.

  • Publichealthgal

debmil24, that sounds great. My son can't wait to get back to CA. Especially San Diego, lucky kid. I guess I should say my son cannot wait until he finishes bootcamp!

  • Jande0621

My daughter just left Great Lakes for a school in San Diego yesterday. Any tips any of you have for newbies would be greatly appreciated!!
  • debmil24

My  son arrived in San Diego last Saturday and said they only have about 6 students and have to have 20 to start classes, so he has been out sight seeing and doing volunteering at different places. Very relaxed there.

  • GoNavy

Anyone know how long they in A school before they "class up" to being able to have visitors / wear civies / get their computers...etc.??? Thanks!

  • Jande0621

Not sure about visitors but I think they can have their comp right away
  • Sharla

GoNavy, My daughter was in San Diego for A school, and it was three weeks till she classed up, others did sooner, others later, just depends on how many students show up.  It appeared to be chosen randomly.  I don't think visiting mattered, but the phasing up for their privileges just gives them more time away and civie privileges to spend more time with you.  Your sailor will know, they will tell them.  I can't remember what the time frame was.  Seems like it was a few weeks till phase 2 and then another few till phase 3.  They can have computers at any time.  Mine arrived with hers, we gave it to her at the airport after PIR.

She absolutely loved San Diego. :)  It's a very small, laid back base, and they can walk just about anywhere and take taxis where they can't.  Taxi's are expensive, most of her expenses were that.  She's in Virginia now at Norfolk, and it's enormous and she misses the family feel of San Diego.  Good luck to your sailor!

  • debmil24

Mine has only been there a week and I'm already sending his clothes. He went to the San Diego Zoo yesterday and said they ride trollies around town. He's at the Anti-Sub warfare base in San Diego. They told him his schools would last about 6 months.

  • Sharla

Mine's school (she's a 4 year) was 9 weeks for A school, went on hold again for 3 months, then classed up for Ops school for another 9 weeks.  Then there was a 2 week overview class.

  • Jande0621

Debmil24 what kind of volunteering is he doing
  • debmil24

He said there is a sign up sheet for things like, helping at Ronald McDonald House, beach clean up, things like that. He had a Marine friend come over Saturday and that is who he went to the zoo with so they can have visitors.

  • Publichealthgal

Can't wait until my son gets out of bootcamp and moves on to the next chapter. He's looking forward to being back in CA.

  • daysia

Hi my son will be going to BC on nov 13 as STG, so happy
  • Publichealthgal

Hi everybody, my son did PIR this past Friday :) He's now in STG A school lovin life!

  • daysia

    HI publicealthgal, congratulations

My son will be going to BC on Nov 13, so happy for him he will be doing the same as your son STG, How long after BC did your son go to A school?

  • debmil24

My son finally started STG A-school yesterday. Been there since July 5th.

  • jillymom

I gotta say; our Sailor finished tech finally and we have never been so happy. It's been a long journey (1 1/2 years after PIR), and finishing at last is a great accomplishment. Plus, what better place than beautiful San Diego. Easy to get around and lots to do in a vibrant city. Now he is at his first homeport waiting a short time to officially board his ship. Our Sailors are working toward a wonderful goal!

  • GMA of a Sonar Tech

Congratulation to your son...it has been a long journey but now for the "real" navy to begin....our sailor has joined his ship about 2 months ago after 1 1/2 years and is deployed in the Med...my husband has a chance to do a Tiger Cruise on his way back to port for 3 days....Hope all is well with you and your family...take care...T

  • spyder013

Congrats to your sailor...it is beautiful there.
I did tiger cruise last year...it was awesome!
  • jillymom

Tiger Cruise? Does this involve the Orient?

  • jillymom

Hope you didn't get a wordy mssg from me, I thought I was sending to a single member. Sorry!

  • spyder013

Tiger cruise is getting to be on ship with sailor on one leg off journey home after deployment. Mine was with mmHg daughter from San Diego to Washington....4 nights. It was an amazing experience.....using the ladders and sleeping in their racks...can't imagine it on a deployment...lol! I would do it again if given another opportunity;).
  • jillymom

    Wow-Tiger Cruise sounds unbelievable.

  • spyder013

    Trust me, it is!
  • daysia

    What is the tiger cruise?
  • spyder013

It's for family members, not spouses our boyfriends or girlfriends. You get to be on the ship with them from one port to another when they are finishing their deployment. It is a wonderful experience for all Of us to tryout navy life~and see what they do on a daily basis. Just be aware there are lots of ladders to climb and racks are small.....and tricky for me to get into...ask for bottom one...it works best cuz you can just sort of flop in;)
  • Publichealthgal

Hello debmil and daysia, so far my son is loving the base he is on and is really looking forward to STG school. He's going to be on hold for about another week and will start school soon.  Bootcamp goes by really fast. Doesn't seem like at the time but before you know it, you'll be experiencing PIR.

  • debmil24

My son turns 21 today. Him in San Diego and me in Fla. First birthday with out him. He's in phase two so hope there's not to much partying going on. How is everyone's sailors doing in STG school?

  • daysia

    Thanks, publichealthgal
  • Jenn PIR 5/30 Ship 4 Div 188

Are OPS school and C school the same , or different? If different, then what is OPS school? My husband just started A school today! Anyone else have a sailor that just started?
  • debmil24

My son finishes OPS school the first of January and then headed to Norfolk to the USS Normandy. Anyone else going to VA?

  • saninpanama

Hi all! My son arrived in SD yesterday ready for A school...my STG just had his PIR on Friday and he is all fired up and ready to go!

  • daysia

Hi, my son st arted ATT in Great Lakes, then off to A School for STG in San Diego. ,
  • Radtechmom

I'm so glad to have found this!   My husband and I felt out of the "loop" in regards to basic training, and knew nothing about "meet and greet"!  We are certainly proud of him, and plan to attend his PIR from A school.  Whoo Hoo!

  • Radtechmom

We plan to attend our sons pir from sonar school. Does anyone know how many guests they can have attending? Had it traditionally been in the morning?
Thanks, just trying to make plans!
  • abuon18

Graduation from sonar school is pretty casual compared to boot camp PIR. Most don't have any friends or family members attend. I attended my husband's A school graduation because I had just moved to San Diego and wasn't working at the time. Out of his class of 15 I was the only guest. You will go and hang out with them in the classroom for a bit before then walk up to another classroom for the "ceremony". They had one chair in a corner for me to sit in. The whole ceremony took about 20 minutes, for everyone to receive their certificates then they all took pictures. After that they had the rest of the afternoon off so we all went to lunch. Honestly I felt really awkward and out of place. They don't expect guests to attend. If you are going to travel to San Diego, I suggest going when you know he will have time off to spend a few days with you Instead because they go right back to work on Monday, sooner if they have duty.
  • navymommo

We attended our son's graduation from stg also. Though we were the only guests, we were made to feel very welcome and appreciated. We met instructors and co as well as our sons friends. It was short and sweet. I'm happy we attended. Stayed in Solana beach And our son spent every available minute with us! We had a great time!
  • Radtechmom

Thanks so much, Navymommo and abuon!  I was clueless, (although, I've heard that before!)  We'll have to rethink going, because it's a big expense, and this is the third year in a row that we have a child getting married!  I appreciate the help!

  • jillymom

I attended one of several mini-grads during the stages of sonar school. There were about 25 of us for as many grads. They kept having to add chairs and said it was the most that had ever attended. Sailors without attendees went out for pizza (in dress whites-lol) together afterward. Not necessary to be there; I just happened to be in town.

  • Radtechmom

Thanks, jillymom!  We decided to go anyway.  We live in Georgia, but I'm originally from Santa Cruz, California.  We are going to make a vacation of it, and hit my old stomping grounds!  And, I can't imagine eating pizza all in white!!  That's funny!

  • vicsadoll

It depends if he is a four year STG or a 6 year STG AEF.

If he is an AEF he will have to attend ATT at great Lakes before going to A school.

My son PIR from BC was 06 mar 2015, he just went to San Diego for A school yesterday.

  • Sailormum

My sailor is a STG and loves it! After BC he went straight to SD for A school. We did get to visit him there at Pt. Loma and it seemed like a nice base. There are lots of things for them to do there. They can walk across the street to the NEX and restaurants. After A school he was commissioned to a destroyer in Yokosuka, Japan. He loves Japan! I'll be happy to answer any other questions.
  • amy1975

My son is STG. He just went to bootcamp July 21. I know he is excited about A school in San Diego. His father was in San Diego the whole time he was in the Navy several years ago. He loved it there.
  • nswc80

Hi!  I haven't been on in a while.  My son is now stationed in Pearl Harbor.  Can't believe it has been 6 months. Hope to visit there next year,  They are definitely staying busy!

  • Jackie

My sailor fiancé just got to a school in San Diego a few days ago and will start school soon! Hoping to get some info and support with this group :)
  • abuon18

NavySMom&Daughter it depends what contract they signed - a 6 year or a 4 year. If it's a 4 year they will go to San Diego right away (leave Sat) for A school. If they're a 6 year they will stay in Great Lakes for their first school (ATT) - I believe it is still in Great Lakes, I don't think it has moved to San Diego although I think there has been discussion of them moving ATT to San Diego to.
  • Jenn PIR 5/30 Ship 4 Div 188

Abuon18 you are correct. The school is still is Great Lakes. My husband is a 6 year and just finished "C" school in San Diego and has been assigned to a ship...
  • abuon18

Thank you for confirming Jenn! My husband went through his schools 2011-2013.
