On about their fifth day at the RTC, the new recruits are tested on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 7 seconds for female recruits. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. Those who pass continue with BC. Those who do not pass are moved to FIT and will be retested in 48 hours and must pass in order to continue at the RTC. See Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) and Fitness Improvement Training ... for more information.

  • Phoenixmom

What will the first day be like at BC?

See Arrival and What Happens at the RTC and Ship/Division--How it Works.

How long is the "I'm here!" call and when will s/he be able to call again?

See Phone Cards and Phone Calls.

  • Phoenixmom

    When will "The Box" come?

It will usually arrive by FedEx within a few days, but it can take up to 2 weeks at times.

  • MalsMom

    Hi everyone!

My daughter left yesterday.  Received the call last night.  I didn't even have a chance to say "Love you" :(

  • Ceej0347

MalsMom - it’s ok. Hard but ok.  They know we love them even if you didn’t get it out.  Stay strong!!

  • AMMominWI

My son ships out the 28th so I am not sure if he will fall in with the February group or March.

  • ProudMom

I believe my son will have PIR on 4/20 since he arrived at boot camp on 4/20. Sound right?

I am so looking forward to his first real phone call home. God bless you  all!

  • Phoenixmom

Hi Elizabeth TG stands for training Group I will put some sites down in case you ladies would like to know what the first few weeks will be like for you Son/Daughter. It is very interesting as well

  • Phoenixmom

  • Phoenixmom

To guesstimate the PIR date, count 9 Fridays after your recruit arrived to get the most likely PIR (graduation) date,

  • Phoenixmom

Rachel you will be fine, and you know even if it isn't it is ok to cry, some Mothers handle their Loved ones going away differently, but staying strong is encouraged. Hey we are Mothers and worrying is what we do. and letting go is not always easy. Please keep your phone close calls can come at any time depending on how soon they get to BC. sometimes early sometimes Late at night.

  • Ceej0347

Elizabeth- I would think our PIR date would more likely be April20. Counting 9 Friday’s from tomorrow.

  • Ceej0347

Me too!  This Navy thing is very hard if your a ‘planner’ kind of mom.

  • lisa

my son left today. hardest thing to see him go

  • Phoenixmom

Welcome Lisa to the site. as you may have notice many a Mothers Loved ones have barely left, so that is what this group does is post concern/Questions and please don't hesitate to ask for information. Great Group of Ladies here and also on Boot camp for Moms. Your Son will be in good hands and you as well. Welcome Again!

  • Ceej0347

I think my kid in the box came today.  But I missed it. Fed ex said I can pick it up after 5.....

im going when I pick up my other son from his practice at 6.

i know I’m close to Great Lakes, so I hope u other ladies get your kid in a box soon!

Pretty sad that I’m so excited for dirty laundry!!

  • Phoenixmom

Ceej347 Love your Humor! sometimes receiving our Loved ones Dirty Laundry is the next best thing. LOL!

Yes, Ladies please know when and it has been stated "Your kid in the Box" comes someone needs to be home to receive it, Fed Ex will not leave it at your door step. They will leave a slip for you to pick it up, I think this is a good thing since so much criminal activity takes place now a days with packages. So please make aware of this. some states have it to where you can sign a slip and give permission for them to leave it at your doorstep, but it all depends.

  • SailorMoon

Ceej0347 - Ha! I bet they will be extra stinky too from all the nerves!

lisa and Rachel -  hang in there! It's a rough day for sure!

    NMH all!

  • Rachel

Yes it has been a rough day. But his plane has landed.  Poor thing is letting his nerves get rattled and has a stomach ache. Just tried to talk to him and relax him. We will see.

  • lemonelephant

If you will not be home when "the box" arrives, then leave a signed and dated note for the FedEx driver to leave a package from Great Lakes or Waukegan and the driver will leave "the box" since the note will count as your signature. See more on that and more in Arrival and What Happens at the RTC.

  • lemonelephant

Most who shipped this week will have PIR on 04/20/2018, but some, if not all of those, who shipped on Monday and Tuesday will have PIR on 04/13/2018 if they were placed in one of the last divisions in last week's TG and are in a Push Division. It is possible for some who arrive on the same date to have PIR a week apart. Wait on The Form Letter to know the PIR date for sure. Arrival and What Happens at the RTC within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) will let you know what is happen in and what to expect.

  • Ceej0347

The box came and I picked it up but I still haven’t opened it yet

I know he packed a note in it  for me so I might wait until I’m alone to open it.

    Sigh!!!

  • Ceej0347

     lemonelephant-

that’s funny (ok well maybe not) that u mention PIR on 4/13 for those that left Mon/tues.  cuz my SR was called up early(was supposed to leave in Jun) got the ‘I’m here’ phone call early (9pm), got the box early (next day) and the one week I can’t be there for PIR is 4/13 cuz I’m out of town for business (and I’m in law enforcement and don’t get to tell the bad guys when to behave-lol) is prob going to be the Friday for his PIR...

    Navy way!

It’s comical and a little disheartening at the same time..... just saying (hope it’s not the case but I’m going to prepare for it- just in case.... and pray like crazy the trial gets pushed back....lol).

  • lemonelephant

Ceej0347, hopefully PIR will be the 20th for him. I know he would want you to attend. If it does end up on the 13th, then he can order the DVD and maybe you can catch the LIvestream or the recording of it.

    Ellen0502 just posted

The April 13th group is up and running. The group for April 20th will be posted within the next couple days.

  • Phoenixmom

Good Morning Dawn the feelings are normal, you will do fine,

To guesstimate the PIR date, count 9 Fridays after your recruit arrived to get the most likely PIR (graduation) date.

  • Zoocrewmom

Dawn I am with you my daughter shipped same week 2-21-18 same call, my heart hurts. I am very proud just want to know when tears stop so I can start smiling.. little worried I miss the little things

  • Phoenixmom

Zoocrewmom some take it harder than others, I know I cried for weeks every time I would think of my Son tears would start, or if someone would mention how is he doing forget it I lost it.  so that is why I say it is normal, Once a letter or call is received I guarantee it will be better and then after that the weeks roll bye.

  • Phoenixmom

the phone banks are available, just not when they first get there.

The "I'm still alive!" or other calls the RDC schedules usually come in the mornings if they are made on Monday through Thursday, but they can come anytime between 8 am and 8 pm CST if the phone banks are available.

The RDC's schedule the phone banks and determine how much time the division will have. The recruit/Sailor will determine who s/he will call. Sometimes an RDC will schedule only a short time at the phone banks and recruits are only able to make one or two 5 to 10 minute calls; calls have also been as short as 1 to 2 minutes, especially if the call is before week 3. Other times, the recruit/Sailor will have an hour or more and will decide how to divide up that time among those s/he wants to talk to. There are 2 rooms near the NEX where the phone banks are located and approximately 50 to 60 phones available in each room depending on how many are in working order.

  • Phoenixmom

phone cards can be sent to them just make sure they are activated for use. and also they will be able to buy personal hygiene and phone cards at the NEX. they do get paid and have an account set up, they speak to them about all that. they have a Navy credit union. they will have times where they will go get what is needed. they will be issued a debit card.

  • Phoenixmom

If you have a phone call from the 847 area code, or US GOVERNMENT, or PRIVATE CALL, or RESTRICTED, or PAY PHONE, or WITHHELD, or UNAVAILABLE or ATT CALLING CARD, be sure to answer!!! (It is possible that a Recruit could call from another area code as well--773, 224, 312, 872 are all area codes in that area.)

  • Phoenixmom

  • Phoenixmom

Know that letters mailed before you get the form letter do not get to your recruit much quicker, if at all, than letters mailed after receiving the form letter because the recruits cannot receive mail until they are in their permanent ship and a Recruit Mail Petty Officer has been trained in how to handle mail, which means it is usually sometime in the third week or later (1-3 or 1-4 DOT) when they start receiving mail depending on when P-days ended and the division formed.

  • Phoenixmom

Recruits can start writing letters the first Sunday they are in their Ship. This is sometimes, rarely, the first Sunday after they arrive, but is often not until the second Sunday, which is why that first real letter often does not arrive until your recruit has been gone nearly 3 weeks.

  • Phoenixmom

At first recruits are only permitted to write during holiday routine on Sunday and later they may be able to write on one or two other days as well (often Tuesday and Thursday) and some Divisions may earn the privilege of writing every day if they are doing really well or if the RDC feels that providing that privilege will boost morale. Letters are put in the mail bag on Sunday and the RMPO mails them on Monday unless Monday is a federal holiday. Any letters written throughout the week won't go in the mail bag until Sunday during holiday routine. Some RDCs permit letters to be placed in the mail bag only on Sunday afternoon with mail going out Monday morning even when they can write on other days and others permit them to put letters in the mail bag on the day they are written for the RMPO to mail the next morning.  It is up to the RDC and there does not seem to be a "norm" for this.

  • Phoenixmom

Ladies let me know if you are needing other information, and I will post. Please be patient I know it is Hard, and know they can lose their calls if someone in their Div. is not acting right. one bad apple spoils it for the rest.
