This group is for N4M members that have a loved one leaving for bootcamp in May...I will leave the year open so that even future Deppers leaving in the month of May of any year can join...Lets share stories, information, concerns, and questions
Hi sailor mom Lisa. yeup it seems like they are all together. When my son called me from the USO he sounded in good spirits and had already bonded with the young men he met. I think he had run into three and I think he said one of the three was Asian. @Willsmom; What address did you get from the recruiter? Jay's recruiter got me the address the Monday, 4 days later and it was Ship 12, Div 224. I've already sent 2 letters hoping that he will get them. I didn't get the box til Weds, a whole week later, and now two days after that no form letter yet. Must take a long time for mail to get to and from Texas :) I've already lloked at the hotels in the area and since I have a Marriott membership am planning on reservation at the Residence Inn. I imagine that for the 4th of July weekend the hotel rates are being jacked up high probably. During holiday weekends thats what tends to happen I guess.
NYRican924-Will is also in Ship 12, Div 224! I've had his address since the day after he got there and have sent about 7 letters already! Do you really think PIR will be the 8th of July??? I was thinking about the 14th, cause isn't it one week for processing and then eight weeks of boot camp? I saw a place online called Navy Lodge that we may try to get reservations for. Sounds nice. Are you driving or flying? We are planning on driving from Alabama...gonna take a side trip while we're at it! :) Glad you posted that Jay was on the same ship as Will. I've been really missing him badly today and for some reason, your post cheered me up! lol- go figure!
Lucy1122-don't you know these boys from the south are really enjoying that cooler weather? My son was wearing just a t-shirt when he left here, but it was cold and rainy in GL when he got there! (I checked the weather channel!)
Hi Willsmom! Yeup our boys eneded up together. I can already imagine them chatting away about their expectations and their journey and fear of the unknown. As for the weather, it definitely is alot cooler over there than here in San Antonio. I also like the post of the stay at the lodge. Hopefully there will be some rooms left. I will definitely be flying there, since the drive from San Antone is pretty long for me and I'm the only driver for my family. I'll look forward to the posts on this forum. Will be a huge support and help during this journey. then come his training in Moterrey for CTI and goodness anything else that follows after that, hahaha.
NYRican924 My son's name is Chris and we're from Southern CA. I sure am envious that you & Willsmom got your Division info & address so soon. I think most of us are at the mercy of the mailman or the recruiter. I called ours again today and he still hasn't been able to get the info. I'm trying not to be too big of a pest ;-) @LindaB I laughed when I read that you rec'd your "kid-in-a-box!". That is how it feels, LOL. You made more money than I did though, I only got a nickel in the box :-)
Went to Daly city recruiting office today, I baked some blueberry bran muffins for the recruiters. It seems that the computer system is down. Our recruiter tried accessing the website with no luck. Every day same story. I told him to be patient with me, it just it's so frustrating not to have any control over this.
Perfect nightmare if my SR don't have any letters from me ,if the other SRs have theirs!
The recruiter told me that he'll do everything he can to help me and also to contact me right away as soon as he finds out anything.
Yeah, I was lucky enough to get the address from the recruiter this past Monday. As for expecting a letter from them I think I read some where that they get to write letters on Sundays, So I'm not expecting anything from him until the earliest next week some time. I remember during basic letters meant so much to us, so right now I'm trying not to focus on getting a letter from him as much as I am on trying to get letters of encouragement etc... to him. Though it would be nice to get some kind of correspondence that would let me know that I have the correct unit address.
@joel's rackie, My recruiter also said today that the computer has been down for a few days....that's why they can't access their website for more info. Hmmm, maybe I should try brownies or cookies
NYRican924-I thought you were in NY!!! lol! Wish I was in San Antoine! Love it there! (also a lot closer to Monterrey! ;) ) I'm the only driver, too. My husband is legally blind. But, am used to driving long distances. Besides, we're going to take a few weeks, Lord willing, and sightsee the area.
Willsmom sorry I missed your post! Yes, I am sure our southern boys are enjoying cooler weather. My soon left in shorts and short sleeve tshirt as well. I did manage to talk him into a light weight jacket...lol. We are just south of Birmingham...in Talladega county. We didn't have tornado damage but SOOO heartbreaking for all of the families that did.

YEH!! I got the form letter and am just so happy because it confirmed the address I had received from recruiter!! That means so much because Jay will actually be receiving the letters I already sent, OMG, just so happy about this, how silly of me :)
Sailor mom and Willsmom, hopefully yours will be the same. It also confirmed the day I speculated for PIR as 8 July. Good thing I'm a Gov't analyst, hahaha. @willsmom; I am from NYC but retired from Active Duty here in San Antone and my children were pretty much raised here and didn't want to uproot them so stayed on here as civilian DOD employee :)
Will definitely love to sight see in Chicago and finally see if their pizza is bereft than NYC (never, hahaha)
Happy for you, NYRican924 that you finally got the form letter. Nothing here. :( My mailman thinks I am stalking him. July 8th. Interesting. Means I'll be driving in all of that July 4th traffic. It's okay, though. Will is most definately worth it! I'm glad you confirmed the address...been wondering if he was going to get all of those letters. I'm guessing if yours was right, mine probably is, too. Hoping, anyway!
@Willsmom; no personal letter. The form letter has "fill in the blanks", and in the last blank it says "Recruit's Comments" and in those lines he wrote "Love you mom..." and gave me some personal instructions about his FB and other notes. Just like three lines in his words. The form letter is a Navy typed standardized form. I'm still pretty happy for him :)
NYRican- Glad to hear you got your letter! I figure ours should be here soon, just trying to be patient. How nice that your son wrote "Love you Mom"...that has to make you feel better. We want to start making hotel plans, but I just can't until I've got confirmation of the date. BTW, I've read that Southwest is one of the best airlines to use because they will change dates if necessary at no additional charge. Don't know that for sure, but I've read it several times....for those of us who have to fly anyway.
Hi SailorMom Lisa. Yeah, I really appreciate the informative post here especially in regards to travel. I didn't know about the Milwaukee airport and the other chicago airport. It's nice to be able to shop around when it comes to air travel. I'm going to check out the Southwest flights from here in San Antonio. As for lodging if I don't get the lodge I will be making reservations at a Marriot like Residence inn or Court Yard since I have their membership and accumulating stays contributes to benefits. Oh, and if we all end up in the same division with a 7/8 grad date, then someone will probably start a PIR group for us. Someone in the Boot Camp Mom's mentioned it. I almost felt booted out :) Anyway I'm not extroverted or proactive enough to start the group, but pretty sure someone else will, and that will be cool. I still like this group/forum too :)
Well, I THOUGHT I was getting the box yesterday when I saw the Fedex guy go down the street... but he went by and stopped at the neighbors down the road. My son arrived at GL last Tuesday so I would expect I should get it soon. I really hope it doesn't get delivered to someone else!
Last night Charlotte had her big send off party with her friends. She had it at her friends house, and her step dad and I delivered the pizza and then left. I haven't heard from her yet and assume she is sleeping in. Its starting to feel real, now. She is 22 and has left home before, but this feels different. Her ship date is the 31st.
Hi all, Well today is my last full day with my boy before he leaves for Great Lakes. Leaves with recruiter for Cleveland tomorrow, then we are planning on meeting up with him tomorrow night for an Indians game -- Go Tribe -- then he is off to Great Lakes on Tuesday. Gosh this is so rough, but also so comforting to read everyones posts who are going through the same thing. Thanks all for the great posts. This site is very informative and just so helpfull. Even though I don't personally know any of you, I feel like we are one big family just by reading your posts and knowing we are all going through the same emotions. So proud of my boy, so excited for him yet so sad to see him go.
Sherblond - I'm one week ahead of you. I received my box last Friday and am fighting an urge to call the recruiter on Monday to see if he can get me an address. Just keep breathing and enjoy the game. I had a rough day last Sunday and Monday (lots of tears), but was better Tuesday saying our final good-byes. Crazy. It helped to see him because he was so happy and ready to go!
MidwestMom - Yes my son also is very excited which helps me get through this. My rough time was his "going away" party a couple of weeks ago. I kept it together pretty good at the party, but cried all the way home and for about another 1.5hrs until I fell asleep. Since then I have been ok, but am more focusing on details of going through his stuff, ie. what he will want when he gets to A School, etc. and making sure he has what he needs to leave, stamps, phone card, etc. I was wondering when the Recruiter will actually have an address.
Oh my Lord, just got my first call!!! Ship 12, DIV 224 expect your calls. It was only 3-5 minutes and we spoke sooooo fast it was funny. Oh but the best was his spirit, he says he is extremely happy and excited about his rate (CTI) and just sounded happy. He also said that obviously he only knows his shipmates by last name so sailor mom etc... I'll only know your sailors by knowing your last name. It's funny cause one name that stood out was an italian name and I kept saying Cris.... I'm talking to much but I'm just excited and happy. Have a great day folks :)
OH, by the way, if no one has started a group for PIR 7/8 I will try to start it withing hte next 10 minutes. It will take a little while. thanks for all the support :)
The group for our sr's has been started and it's calles "PIR 7/8/11, Welcome". Hope to see all those following and supporting each other on that group. It will be great to plan together and provide travel information and join in the journey together through the ups and downs :)
Congrats NYRican! That was a lot less than the 3 weeks we are supposed to expect before we hear from them again.
Sherblond - The recruiter may be able to give you an addy after 3 days, but most on these sites tell you not to trust them. That being said, most addresses are correct. I'm going to try to give him a full week before I call for an address and there's a chance I could have the official letter by then. Till then, working on building a stack of letters and cards, trying to incorporate pics in my letters, etc.
@MidwestMom- Thanks. Yes, I was not expecting a call this morning either, and the worst thing was that it said "UNKNOWN" on Caller ID and no number with area code. I'm super thankful that I answered it. When I heard his voice I jumped so quick, cause as you mentioned, was not expected for another 2 weeks. Your right about the address. Got it from the recruiter like 3 or 4 days later and it was confirmed when I received the Form letter. I sent out a letter the next day Tuesday, and I asked if he had received any letters and he said no. He also as expected wants lots of letters. It's something they all are hoping for :)
I got a phone call too from my husband! I was just about to drive home from working the night shift when I received a phone call! At first I was nervous, thought he got hurt or in trouble. He said he is fine and doing well. The only thing is he opened a bank account tru the Navy, now the problem is I don't have a power of attorney. How am I supposed to have access on that? Oh no! i guess i just have to pull on extra shifts to be able to afford the trip to Great Lakes!
Got my phone call too today-came during church, but I was ready! 7 min, 23 sec. My son said he's fine, but will be glad when boot camp is over...said all the food is low fat, sugar free. He also said they may not get any mail till next week??? Hmmm...........I sure wish that he had sounded happier...but, boot camp isn't a picnic.
Glad to hear that people are getting their phone calls! I still haven't gotten my box.. and he arrived GL on Tuesday. I did have an unknown on my phone last night.. I didn't hear it ring. I'm hoping it wasn't him! I can't wait to talk to him and see how things are going.
Hi all. I'm posting this on most of my pages. I'm asking for prayers that the Navy finds Jay fit and gants him a waiver for his bad eyesight that is correctable to 20/20. Jay really is excited about his career choice. Thanks y'all :)
Glad to hear that some of you got your first phone calls over the weekend! We're about a week behind you, so still waiting for that first letter...will call the recruiter today to see if he has an address.
I hope you haven't bought her the granny panties yet! She will be provided them at BC. EVERYTHING my son took that wasn't in his billfold was returned in the Box. You might want to pick her up some white ones that she'll like (not necessarily granny style) that you can ship her for A-school. My husband use to comment on the girls wearing tiger panties under their whites back in the 80's. They didn't get off the ship until they'd changed.
Midwest Mom's right. Everything...underwear included came back in that box :-)
My son wasn't going to bring his cell phone at first but I talked him into it...so glad I did. He ended up staying over night at a hotel after MEPS and then the following day flew out. He was able to call us several times because he had that phone. He also used it to make the last 10-15 second phone call while starting the processing at BC. They'll have them send it home in the box, but make sure they bring that cell phone...fully charged!
Got my box and the letter today. Found out he is Ship 12 DIV 226. :) His PIR date is July 8th too. I know there are a few here. I"m so glad to finally have a date. And I'm so happy.. my husband just started a new job and didn't know if he would be able to take time off to go to GL. He just told me he has the week of the 4th off for shutdown, so he will be able to go. :)
We dropped my son off with the recruiter today and will be traveling to MEPS in Mechanicburg, PA early tomorrow morning. Anyone know if we get to watch them take off in the plane for GL after swearing in?
Hey there Stepsyl.. how fun! Is your son Ship 12 Div 226 too? I'm so excited that his PIR is July 8! Makes it so much easier for us since my husband has off. Son sounds like he is missing us.. and that it was crazy hard but he was getting by.
Well, I finally received the letter (Ship12 Div 225). It was so great to finally get his address. Graduation 7/8. Of course we figured the next week so cancelling vacation for that week! Is anyone else in this division?
@Proudmama, you should be able to see him swear in at MEPS in the morning as well as meet him at the airport to spend time with him before he takes off. I didn't know about the airport until that day and had to get my daughter back to her school for cheer practice, so I'm kicking myself that I missed out on that time with my hubby. The days can't pass by fast enough now until I can hear from him.
Hello everyone got my letter.....my son is Ship12,Div226.PIR 7/8/11.Yeah we cannot wait, we figured PIR would be a week or two later than the 8th. Not complaining just excited.lol
