From Rochester NY... where the wind and snow blows! LOL.
  • Sherblond

Just got the call from my son saying he is at the training camp....I guess it's official now!!
  • Susie2916

    @Linda B  -  Have you received anything from your daughter yet?  Just wondering if you received her form letter yet?  I understand about the airport. My son flew out of St. Louis with a few other sailors, but he had to spend the night over there and then goto MEPS most of the day. I didn't get to see him off either. I'm sure your daughter understands.  God love them.  I think they are doing better than the parents. :o}

  • Donna

My son left last night and got to boot camp this evening some time. I was wondering if anybody knows or can tell me how long they have to call home. I have been sitting at home by the phone all day today and it's 3:00am my time now and still no phone call.
  • Donna

Also, can somebody please tell me how long it takes before I would get a form letter from him, or the Navy rather? I'm sorry that I have so many questions but he my oldest son and also the first one to leave home and I'm having an extremely hard time with it.
  • dudiesmom

Donna.. my son arrived at bootcamp on a Tuesday evening around 5. I got my first phone call at 11 pm from him.. good thing I took my phone to bed! Then this past Tuesdy (1 week later) I got the box from him with nothing in it.. but that same day my form letter arrived too. It was sooo nice hearing from him finally!

  • Lisa

Donna, by now you probably have rec'd your first quick call. 15-30 sec the night they begin their processing. My box arrived about a week later with only his belongings in it, no letter. I just rec'd the information letter yesterday (12 days after his arrival). Though it's not an actual letter from your son, it is a form letter, addressed in his writing with their Div/Ship and PIR info. My son is my oldest also and completely understand...keep your chin up :-)
  • Lisa

Donna, forgot to mention that they'll have 4 lines on the bottom of that letter to write you a short personal message. He also had listed the 4 people he wants at his PIR...ooops he forgot his sister, LOL. Now that I can write him, I'll make sure he changes that :-)
  • MidwestMom

Donna - I was lucky and received my call at 8:25 pm, but if you still haven't received a call, don't fret too much (as if you have control over that)!  There are others that didn't get the 'I'm here call' for one reason or another.  Sometimes their kid doesn't want to wait in line, sometimes their cell phone is dead, sometimes they don't want to wake the parent.  Keep repeating, no news is good news.  Ugh!
  • Donna

Thanks you guys. I still have not received a phone call, which makes me even sadder. Being able to hear his voice again yesterday was the one thing that kept me going. I guess you're right, no news is good news. So it will take a week before I get the form letter? This is so much harder than I ever even imagined. :(
  • corpsmanwifeschu

I never got an arrival call either, Donna. I'm now at exactly three weeks since I've heard or seen him. Hoping for his first personal letter here soon, no luck today. There's always tomorrow. Hard to believe its been three weeks since I drove away from the recruiter's office.
  • joel's_rackie

It has been two weeks since my SR left for BC. My husband called me in O'Hare while waiting for the bus to take them to GL. After that I missed the official "I'm here" call . A week later received his box with his clothes, shoes and a small note on the back of a McDonald's receipt. This last Sunday, day 10 i got a call from him and we talked for 5-6 minutes. He informed me that it took a while before his division filled in. He sounds good and excited. His PIR is 07/08. I got tons of letters for him ready to be mailed and i asked him for his address, he instructed me to wait for his form letter which I don't have yet.

Anyway I've been bugging the recruiter almost every day for Joel's address, he finally called yesterday. I'm sending a trial  letter now just because I don't want him not to have any letters from me while the other SR's start to received theirs.

Donna and sailorwife: we are here to support each one another. Hang in there!

  • Donna

Oh my gosh, I just got my "I'm here" call from my son!!! I'm so happy, it was great to hear his voice even if it was only for 5 seconds. I just can't stop crying...I miss him so much!
  • joel's_rackie

    I'm happy for you donna!
  • Donna

    Thank you :)
  • Sharon-Proud Sailor Mom

Donna and the new girls - my SR left on 5/4 - I thought I'd never get through this, crazy because he's 23. I cried and walked around in a daze - but now, I've gotten letters and a phone call.  It's all good - to hear him talk - it is hard, but rewarding and he is so proud of himself - I'm pretty proud too!  The first days are tough - but we're strong moms - Navyformoms strong!
  • corpsmanwifeschu

Ruthann, did your son have to go to FMTB with being a HM? Was he "voluntold" that he will be going Greenside, or is he able to stay with the Navy?
  • corpsmanwifeschu

Thanks for the info JLC. How did the ordering go on that list, cause if it's alphabetical, there won't be that choice. Hubby's hoping to stay blueside.
  • corpsmanwifeschu

My friend who is a Marine was pretty excited when I told him hubby got HM, hubby however is not that interested in going green. Fingers are crossed for him. Thanks so much for your input ladies!
  • Sherblond

So happy you finally got your call Donna, know you were worried sick. Hang in there girl, we're all in this together!
  • susan

My son has been in for almost 2 and 1/2 years. With time it will get better. My son is on the USS Tortuga. After boot camp Skype will be your best friend. It is free and you can get it on any computer. You get to see  your sailor while speaking to them. This group has help me a lot. It is nice to know that your not alone.

  • Susie2916

@ Susan: Thanks that is great information about skype. I had to buy a new computer last fall and have a built in cam now. So, that will be great. Thanks for the information.

Charlotte leaves May 31 from Dallas.  Anyone else leaving that date?  From Dallas?  What time is the flight from Dallas to O'Hare?
  • CArol

    Great article joel's_rackie - Thanks!
  • Sherblond

Hi all, Feeling a little sad tonight. My son has been gone for only 3 days now and I'm going crazy wondering what he is going through. Really took for granted that no matter where her was, when he was away from me, I could always call or text him when I was thinking about him. Hits me hard sometimes. Staying busy is my friend :(
  • Susie2916

Linda B - Glad you finally received your letter.  My daughter is in the same boat.  She always said she wanted to be an only child. Now that my son is gone she has been spending time in his bedroom and now wears one of his religious Navy medals constantly.  I kind of laughed when she asked if she could wear it. I guess we all have to readjust to the whole. Good luck and enjoy camping.
  • lucyloves...herSailor!

Sherblond ....totally feel your pain. My son has been gone since May 4 and it was TERRIBLE at our house for about the first week. Lots of tears! It will get better....keeping busy was what helped me so much. When he can write and you get that first "real" letter....you'll feel much better.
  • joel's_rackie

@ Linda, When I received my husband's box (day6)  same thing, rolled up jeans, shoes and socks, inside out t-shirt and sweatshirt -which I wear when I miss him (nope. not washing it).Love that I could smell him in that. I got a note on the back of a McDonalds  receipt too!

    Joel left 05/12. PIR is 07/08/2011 ship12/div224

  • joel's_rackie

    A  MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE!

In 1996, a humanitarian organization based in Washington, D.C., known as 'No Greater Love' conducted a survey on children and asked them why do they think there is a holiday on Memorial Day. It was agonizing to hear their remarks that were all associated with barbecues and extended weekend parties and celebration, while they hadn't the vaguest idea about the sacrifices of the soldiers in whose honor it is celebrated. One of the children was even quoted as saying that this was the day when swimming pools open!

Thus, the organization came up with the idea of 'National Moment of Remembrance' to remind and especially, let the future generations know about the real meaning of the holiday. The idea clicked with the President and Congress and since 1997, it became a standard American tradition. National Moment of Remembrance requires everybody to keep silent for a minute, exactly at 3.00 pm (local time) when 'Taps' is played and reflect on the glory of those who have shed blood for us. The federal government hopes to raise public awareness about the heroes and their valor by introducing this moment.

  • Donna

Sherblond, I feel the same way. Mine has only been gone for 4 days now and it's just awful. I spend a lot of time crying. I wonder how he is, what he's doing, how he likes the food, if he's getting enough sleep, and all of that other "mom stuff." I can't wait to get his address so I can finally get to send him a letter. I haven't got my form letter or my "kid in a box" yet, but I'm sure that will be another day full of tears. This is so hard for us as moms :(
  • corpsmanwifeschu

Just remember what this upcoming weekend is about...
The American flag does not fly because the wind moves past it. The American
flag flies from the last breath of each military member who has died protecting it.
Please remember that freedom is not free. Remember and pray for them and their families this Memorial Day weekend and every day following...till they all come home ♥ God Bless Our Troops! ♥
  • joel's_rackie

Hi everyone! I just got off the phone. Got a 5 minute phone call from my Joel ship12/div224!!! PIR 07/08, have your phones handy!!
  • Donna

Hi everybody! I just got my form letter today, on day 5!!!! Ship 12/div 231!! PIR July 22nd. He wrote such a nice message at the bottom of the form letter. I miss him so much and so can't wait to go to his graduation!!
  • Donna

Yes, it feels wonderful. It really made my day today. Yes, but it just feels like time is going so slow.
  • Donna

Can somebody, anybody please let me know how to find a group with my son's ship and div #?
  • Donna

I did the search thing and there is not a group yet. I would like to start one, but I'm unsure how to do start it.
  • Donna

oops, not do start it but start it

  • Donna

Yeah, I figured it out after I asked, but thank you :)
  • Donna

Um what happens if I didn't put a description in it? Because I totally did not do that.
  • joel's_rackie

This is the 3rd phone call I got from my SR, 1st call "I'm here" 05/12; 2nd call (day10) 05/22; and 3rd one (day16) 05/28. He is in ship 12/div224. He explained that they "earned" the phone call since their ship/div is doing pretty well! He said that the RDCs are really pushing them to learn and work as a whole team, and as a incentive they get to call their families. Tomorrow they will start receiving/mail letters. I received the form letter just yesterday and only had an address then. I guess he'll have to wait for another week to get my letters...
  • Sherblond

Oh my gosh, have been gone all day, just got home and didn't get the mail. Pulled up the website and saw that Donna got her letter already, so ran out to the mailbox and mine was there too. So awesome to get it and wow, so much earlier than I thought. Haven't even got the box yet. His note at the end is kind of sad....says he is "doing alright, it kind of sucks but I expected that" says the worst part is they didn't get to sleep for the first 40 hrs they were there. Now that I got his address earlier than I thought I would, am mad that it is Saturday night on a holiday weekend, so I can't mail any of my letters Tuesday. Guess now I'm gettin a little greedy.
  • MidwestMom

Funny Sherblond!  I'm a bit cranky tonight too that the letter I wrote before logging on has to sit until Tuesday.  I've mailed about a dozen letters, but found out from another posting on our PIR site that a Div next to my son's still hasn't received letters yet, so I guess they probably won't notice the delay in mail this weekend.  Eventually, they should get a nice pile to enjoy!
  • dudiesmom

Just mailed out my first letter yesterday to my son. When I talked to him, he also said it was very hard.. and just so crazy that I couldn't even imagine it. He said there were times he was wondering "what did I do??" LOL.. but then he said other times were good. He is in Dv 226 and said he has some cool bunkmates. :) He did tell me not to send any photos- that they would be taken away and he wanted to fly low under the radar.
  • MidwestMom

I incorporate pictures into some of my letters.  Some of the pictures are from his going away party so they'll remind him of all the friends and family back home that are supporting him.  Digital cameras sure have made things easier!
  • dudiesmom

I thought of doing that.. wasn't sure if they couldn't have pictures period or just loose pics. I'll have to just put them into the letter. :)
  • MidwestMom

As long as nothing is 'bulky' in the envelope, I think they'll go through without any issues.  Bulky mail may get opened in front of the RDC so they can check the contents.  This keeps all our SR's safe.

    In Loving Memory
    On every soldier’s tombstone
should be a message of honor, respect and love:
    "In loving memory
of one who loved his country,
    who fought against evil
to preserve what is right and true and good.
    In loving memory
of one who is a cut above the rest of us,
    who had the surpassing courage,
    the uncommon strength,
to do whatever had to be done,
    persevering through hardship and pain.
    In loving memory
of one who was brave enough
to give his life, his all,
so that those he cared about
    would remain safe and free.
    In loving memory
of a unique and treasured soldier
    who will never be forgotten."
